What Kind Of Amp Modeler?

Here's the thing. I have a Mesa Lonestar and it sounds great with my strat. I have a couple pedals but I want to be able to model different amps. Am I just being stupid? Should I just use pedals to color the tone? Maybe I am not even sure what I am looking for. I guess I would like something that sounds British (Vox), Bluesy (Fender), heavy (Marshall). I get great tones out of my current setup but for some reason I am not satisfied. I have been looking at the Pandora, Line6 Pod x3, Digitech RP150, Rocktron Utopia, and Zoom G1. I really don't need any effects because of my current pedals. Can you guys help me out?

Try the Pod x-3 live and the boss gt-10 in a store on the same amp you have at home and you'll see if they satisfy you. Bring your own amp if they don't have yours in the store or otherwise you might get a wrong picture.

I don't think you'll get very good results amp modeling through your Lonestar.

If you get a Marshall G'vnor you'll get Marshall sound. Vox has their coltron series.
There was another new series out for vintage sounds from the 60's and 70's but right now I can't seem to remember who from. huh.gif

I think you'll be better off making use of your great amp and color the sound with different pedals. I promise you that the sound will come out a lot better.

You can't really model those amps to great on Mesa. It will sound like Mesa in the end. If you buy a modeling device, it is best to plug it into monitor speakers, or keyboard amp that will not alter the sound that much.
However you can try new Boss Fender modelling pedals, or as MickeM suggested, try some Marshall pedals. I used bluesbreaker, and Guvnor is a good choice as well to get close to Marshall sound. I repeat it will not sound too much like Marshall or Fender even with those..

Ivan is right, in the end it will always sound like a Boogie in your setup. If you really want to get away from that sound you should really consider to either buy a different amp or to go for a pod/pandora/whatever amp modeler and run it through some kind of power amp.

This is most likely true. I sometimes run my L6 toneport thru a homebrew tube amp and it sounds more like the tube amp than the L6. If you want to use a modeler, I think you need a neutral sounding amp. That said, Amplitube 2 is awesome! cool.gif

I own both a POD-X3 and a GT-8 (i bought it over the GT-10 because it had more than enough to suit me as a beginner level guitarist) and i'll say that over the months i pretty much never run amp models through my amp, the sound is always far too coloured by the amp i'm running it through.

I do find that they are great for effects, the GT-8 especially. Just run the effects through the amp and switch off any amp modelling and hey presto, about as many sounds as you could want running through your own amp.

Granted i dare say having the actual pedals would probably sound better, but if you want variety and versatility for a reasonable price (and with less clutter) then you should consider a GT-8/GT-10.

Amp modeling works better without an amp in the way...

Well, it was amp modeling that caught my attention more towards Line 6 than boss products.
I'd say that Line 6 is all about flexibility. Well, a guitar, cables and a POD X3 is all you need to reach virtually any sound. Well, and it can also be used for voice, acoustic or bass guitar. For the size and price of the package it is a a good option. That was my option as I am not buying a good amp any soon. Actually, it is not a problem at all to go for a small gig with POD directly into PA. You just have to be sure to hear yourself (or use earphones)...

If you want more specialized amp modeling (specially for recording) I'd say guitar rig 3 is also a good way to go. I used it only once, but my overall impression was that there are much less models but it has higher model quality than line 6 (which is already good).
