Since my last collabs were a bit softer, I decided to hit you with a really heavy one!
Behold...THE DJENT COLLAB!
Here's what's what:
I recorded using the baritone - which is tuned to drop A - so you guys can use the good old A minor pentatonic or A minor blues scale to come up with solos on this track! Double the heaviness and the ease of playing
Scales: A minor/ A minor pentatonic
Time signature: 4/4
Material format:
- a wav. track containing the solo without any effects - if you are using distortion, leave it on - an mp3 track with the backing track and the solo
I just hope that my left wrist is healing fast. I accidental twisted it at work.

I might just dust off my drop tuned guitar for this one

Wou!!! I love this backing man! It sounds fantastic and it is very funny to jam.

Damn, if Gabriel, Ben and you Cosmin play for this collab, our solos will sound so bad maybe I should spice mine up with some odd groupings

What an awesome backing track!! I'm not familiar with Djent.....heard OF it, but not sure exactly what defines that genre. But I love the backing track!!
I've finally made it over my "hump" of musical responsibilities, so I intend to rock this collab for sure!!

Thank you man, well here's what's what on djent: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djent
...and I would love to have you on this one How's life, signor Rodriguez?
I'm thinking that this is the "Outro" of a song. Threat Signal has similar outro in their latest album.
What do you think Cosmin ?
YES! I love it! Thank you good sir! I will need the tracks and if you could, try and record a little bit more tight, because the idea is absolutely great

Alrighty, here is my go at it. Kinda went outside the pentatonic box a bit and went for a more exotic theme.

I dont know the first Djamn thing about Djent but I am diggin on the ideas expressed by the first couple of takes from WeePee and DeGroot. That was Djammin guys!!
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 14 2012, 08:13 AM
Oh yes! So am I - degroot's take has a really exotic flavor to it while Weepee's has very strong resolving properties!
Posted by: ElHombre Jul 15 2012, 03:17 PM
what a track. Never made a solo for anything like it before, im up
Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 15 2012, 03:39 PM
This is really a challenge Cosmin! Just noodling around the Am pentatonic doesn't quite feel right here...

Im combining Am and Am harmonic scale to create an exotic sound Using both the G and the G# of the harmonic scale at some point, for example drumrolls also E phrygian dominant

Really just a scratch track I did to outline my idea but got a call today and may have to go out of town on emergency so posting what I have for now.

Nice choice I have continued this track into a full fledged song - not ready yet - and have implemented harmonic minor phrases as well. It features a really heavy dubstep/ metal part

This is my idea for the collaboration. I will try to make it tighter in the coming days. This has been more of an experiment for me on odd groupings inspired by Cosmin's lessons djent_cosmin_opetholic.mp3 ( 2.77MB )

quick preview of mine! I was working night today so Im to tired to finish the solo but tommorow I finish it
Howdy Erik! Nice work mate! There's still 2 days left so take it easy! Get rest and then record, ok? A clear mind is always best when working

Guys, all these takes here are absolutely insane - I just dream about playing like you guys here.. Anyway - I opened my mouth for this (my first) collab as the first one, and here is what I got:
I want to thank you for the takes you have provided so far and congratulate you for raising the bar! I am very happy to see what you all came up with and I am almost sorry I haven't made a video collab out of this one
You have until tomorrow morning, if you want to add/ change anything to your takes, or post new ones! The final mix will be available next week!
Cheers to everyone!

I wasn't too happy with what I did for my take, but now I think I am Will post tomorrow with the comments and suggestions

Alright dudes!
Here are the results in the order of appearance in the mix:
DeGroot - your take is totally AWESOME man, it transposed me into a psychedelic Indian trance! I MUST congratulate you for the extremely inspired note choice! Good work!
mad - I must congratulate you for your first take mate! I chose the last part because it offered me the possibility to make a difference between the registers - the first and middle were too low and they would've been lost in the mix, due to the fact that we already have a thick riff going on in the back. Octaves are always a good choice for this sort of context
Opetholic - Mert, your take is filled with technique display - we all know you are the one finishing the Mojo Oro quest So hats off to you mate. The only thing which I would like you to focus on, is diversifying your playing by implementing more articulation elements and developing your phrasing in such a way that you won't be kept in one direction because of too mush focus on technique We will discuss in your thread
ElHombre - Erik, as we discussed, you have a lot of ideas which you want to implement here - not necessarily a bad thing, but I would suggest more emphasis on fewer ideas and developing them into a balanced technique/ phrasing/ melodic approach!
Davenport - Man, you rock! Rhythm, melody and technique, blended together for a crushing take! Hats off to you!!
Gitarrero and Weepee - HA! I made a team out of you two and I love the melodicity of the result
Cosmin
PS: What would you guys like to participate on, next month?Any suggestions for the new collab?
I knew you would take that particular part of my solo, I just knew it Sounds great together with Weepee's solo
How about a celtic collab next month? After we touched that topic in yesterday's chat...

An acoustic would be killer but it's hard to get decent sound without a mic.
But hey what about some really out of the comfort zone collab. Some really weird scale combinations...
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 28 2012, 07:38 AM
Out of the comfort zone eh?
How about a collab for picking up chicks, using less common used scales This is DEFINITELY out of any comfort zone
Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 28 2012, 07:49 AM
Sounds like a plan!
But for most guys here it would be out of the comfort zone playing a boring pop song for a chick
So let's do a "Rihanna-ballad" collab
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 28 2012, 08:37 AM
So! Mainstream pop collab?
Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 28 2012, 08:46 AM
Yes, mainstream pop-collab! The other guys are gonna love it!!
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 29 2012, 01:53 PM
Is EVERYONE ok with this idea?
Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 29 2012, 01:54 PM

Super great job guys! Everyone kicked majorly!
Next time, maybe upload to soundcloud as well so that each solo can be annotated and commented on the track itself, it's a way spiff way visually see the track with comments as it plays. Gotta love soundcloud!
