Hi there!

I know this is not the singing forum but I would like to know everybody's opinion on that. Is it possible to "learn" hoarse singing even if you don't have a natural "throaty" voice? I would love to sing some songs in the style of Rise Against, and to sound a bit like the singer, but I wanted to ask first.

It does work for me.

Well its possible as with everything..There are some techniques to practice in order to be able to sing like that (and not hurt yourself)..We have singing instructors here so I recommend asking this question in their personal boards..They should be able to give you all the info you need about that.

I dunno why, I generally don't like music like that but I liked that band =)



But I like this band a lot more. Imagine trying to sing like this?

There is no known technique,like you need to do exactly this or that.All I know it takes time to make your singing instrument strong enough to make trough all the pressure this kind of singing requires.
Besides stomach and breath control that you need to practice,this singing is all a bout pressure and throat singing.
I would not recommend it ,caus,it could leave permanent damage to your vocal chords.
My advice is,learn how to sing clean first.Then you will haw the discipline to move to the next level.Going strait to this kind of singing can be bad for your voice.

hi nazgul, i'm currently taking singing lessons with a really amazing teacher from germany, she is very experienced and very highly qualified. she started me off singing pop songs, but when i told her it was really rock music i was into and wanted to try that sort of thing she told me that was no problem at all and we have started with some sound garden songs to get me into it.

she has told me that it is entirely possible to sing in any vocal style and not damage your voice as long as you do it properly, even really extreme stuff like cannibal corpse, but you need to know how to support your voice or you can hurt yourself. she made the point that when you are a baby you naturally know how to support your voice and you can therefor scream all day and not hurt yourself at all, but as we are told not to do this as we get older your body loses its natural ability to support your voice.

to get started trying a more harsh vocal approach you need to make sure you know the basics of singing first, proper breathing techniques etc. just check out the vocal lessons here if you're not familiar with this stuff. then what you have to do is try not to "sing" the words. oyu have to use your natural speaking voice. try and say a note, one that it as the bottom end of your natural speaking voice, just say AHHHH, but on pitch. then remember the feeling of it and try to use that as your guideline.

next try the words to a song you like, something not to high pitched at first and just try and "say" the words, like storytelling, but you say them on pitch and try to put some power into it. if at any time your throat hurts stop immediately, you are doing it wrong, though it is normal for your throat to be a bit "tired" when you are finished.

remember rough vocals will NOT damage your throat, but ONLY if you do it properly, the wrong technique can damage your thraot very badly, so be careful and if you feel you are hurting always stop.
