I've always had trouble with this - how exactly do you do a percussive stroke (apologies to all those who are sitting their smacking their foreheads thinking I'm completely stupid. I don't know the correct term for this). Are all of the strings muted with your right hand while strumming, or do you just pull your fingers off of the fretboard a bit?

I think you mean a rake?

Something like:

E||-------||
B||--7----||
G||--x----||
D||--x----||
A||--x----||
E||-------||

Where the x is a "dead note" e.g. just a click ....

I do this by fretting the note that will sound with my index finger, then deaden the rest of the strings with the remaning fingers of my fretting hand.

I do this both ways. It really depends on what you are playing (and it's good to do both smile.gif ). I'd suggest taking 10 minutes trying it by just resting your left hand fingers on the strings, and strumming some fast rhythms with your right. Then try it by chopping down with your right hand palm edge while you strum.

The left hand fingers work well when you are trying to do funk rhythms, by playing a barre chord, and 'pulsing', pressing down your fingers only when you want the chord to sound, and relaxing your hand to get the percussive sound when you strum the rest of the time.

Ok, so from what I'm seeing either way works fine. Lemme throw out an example:

e|-4-4-x-x-x-4-x-4--4-4-4-4--0-0-x-x-x-0-x-0--0-0-0-0---|
B|-5-5-x-x-x-5-x-5--5-5-5-5--0-0-x-x-x-0-x-0--0-0-0-0---|
G|-6-6-x-x-x-6-x-6--6-6-6-6--1-1-x-x-x-1-x-1--1-1-1-1---|
D|-6-6-x-x-x-6-x-6--6-6-6-6--2-2-x-x-x-2-x-2--2-2-2-2---|
A|-4-4-x-x-x-4-x-4--4-4-4-4--2-2-x-x-x-2-x-2--2-2-2-2---|
E|------x-x-x----x--------------------x-x-x----x---------------|

Would you use a barre chord type muting for that, or more of a right hand muting with that?

Ok, so this was slightly different from what I understood, but Tank covered it nicely.

Since you have a whole line of Xs, the bar technique would work well here ... I find palm muting works better if you have say 2 or 3 of the lower pitched strings to mute, but you could prbably get it to work either way as Tank said.
