Hey GMC. I want to quit. Cold turkey. Help me?

No, I'm not talking about quitting guitar. I'd go even more crazy than I am now, and seeing as I just got out of a mental hospital, that's REALLY crazy. tongue.gif

I'm talking about quitting smoking. I hate this nasty habit. It's disgusting, annoying, obviously addictive, and worst of all, it's literally killing me. The problem is, everyone in my household smokes and the habit pretty much runs in my blood, both making it harder to quit. I'm honestly not sure what route to take. I've tried patches, and they work fine for a while, but when I take them off, it's right back to where I started. Never tried the gum, but I've heard it's nasty and if that's the case, it won't work for me. My dad was able to quit cold, but he was also living alone at the time. A lot of other people have been able to quit fairly easily, but they're also in the same position my dad was in; No one else around them smoked. I feel as though I could toss every pack out the window on any given day, and not care, but then, I see the people around me doing it, and it gives me cravings.

Any ideas, guys? I certainly have enough drive to do it, it's just...well, doing it. The last time I tried to quit, I got the shakes and started crying uncontrollably. Weird, because I've never heard of that happening with any smoking habit.

Thanks in advance. If any of your ideas work, you may just save my life, and I would greatly appreciate it. wink.gif

I haven't ever developed a smoking habit, but I think a proper way to go about this(and it might be crazy enough to work) is when you feel cravings to smoke, go into a confined space where you can close everyone out be it the bathroom or your bedroom and play guitar. Guitar always makes me forget everything else that goes on in the world. It might just kill those cravings.

have you looked at trying 'Champix'? I know a few long time smokers who have used that successfully. Im not sure if you are in the UK, if so then I know it is quite easy to get hold of. You can get it prescribed and there is a lot of support available with it. Might be worth looking into as it really does seem to turn you right off smoking.
I quit years ago after a few failed attempts. I think that if you want to quit more than you want to smoke then you are off to a good start.

High !

To find a place where no one is smoking and playing guitar is a good idea .

When the feeling is getting stronger... to take a cigarette take your guitar go into a natural place go running at least a mile-better more and when you feel week do some sit-ups and push ups for active relaxing run again and then come down and play on your guitar what you feel .

I am serious with that !!!

I myself did that many years ago (without guitar - came later to that and still fighting with it ) when i felt become weak i went for a run until my circulation nearly collapsed -- then been just walking slowly -- and then did sit-ups and stuff like that .

The main thing is to feel ONESELF and to recognize where one is and than with time see which way next to go means to get a clear mind . and get earthed . Might be a kind of meditation effect too !

When I was in the Marines (mid 80's- early 90's), we had to run with our M16A2's at port arms (held in front of us, butt of rifle down in right hand, barrel up and left). Perhaps you could run with your guitar at port arms? laugh.gif
Seriously though, I also smoke and have found it extremely hard to quit, but I have seen it done by many, including my dad who quit when he was 60 (back in June 2001) after smoking for 40 years. However, he had just been diagnosed with cancer and it was Stage 4 before it was caught. He died three months later. And if anyone on this thread wants to call me a "dumb-butt" for still smoking, go ahead. I have it coming.

Carrot sticks and exercise.

If you have the desire and drive to quit you will. The physical withdrawl isn't much, it's getting out of the metal habit that's the hardest.

I stopped smoking 11 years ago, 12 years ago I stopped smoking in the house and at work and just smoked when i was in the pub etc.
The next year I stopped the rest of it.

The pub was the hardest and so were certain streets I used to walk where I was so used to having a cigarette.

The other thing is to think of yourself as a non smoker not that you are trying to give up.

Smoking is more of a habit than an addiction. The way I quit smoking was by quitting the habit of it one step at a time. In other words, I stopped associating it with other things in my life. The first thing I did was I stopped smoking every time I got in the car in the morning. Then I stopped smoking after I would eat. Before I knew it I was only smoking when I would go out to the pub. For some reason I stopped going out for a while, and that is pretty much when I quit.

Don't try to quit all at once, otherwise you will probably have a relapse. Just gradually disassociate it with other things in your life, and gradually reduce the smoking rituals, and you'll be surprised how fast you will quit smoking. Once you clear out your lungs you'll also lose your ability to smoke without suffering from some serious coughing the next day. So the next time you do smoke you'll probably hate it.

If I can do it, so can you biggrin.gif

Amen to that. Humans are creatures of habit.. most stuff we do because it's what we've done for X amount of years.

The hardest part is deciding. Committing to the decision that you're not going to do anything any more is scary.. having to let go of something that was part of you. Most of the power lies in the decision. Also, will power is something that needs to be exercised like a muscle. Every time you make a conscious choice not to do something, you're exercising your will power a bit more. Don't feel bad that it doesn't happen over night. I strongly agree with what Mudbone is saying here.

I also think there is great power in combating cravings by forcing yourself to do something else. When I had real cravings for a drink, I'd make myself have a drink of water so that I had no physical thirst cravings at all. Even though alcohol cravings don't have much to do with actual thirst, making yourself full of liquid means the last thing you feel like is a pint of beer. So, your using something harmless (or enjoyable and beneficial like guitar playing) to override your cravings. smile.gif

Yes the decision of waking up one day and saying ' this is it..i'll stop right now '..is not so obvious.
It feels like something has been taken away from you .....like you lose(loose?? tongue.gif huh.gif ) the most important thing in your life.
Ofcours that's nonsens ..but still it feels like that.

I stopped immediatly but wouldn't advice it..gradually or not...you can do IT!!

One thing is for sure ..after a couple of days you'll feel better and after a week you feel reborn !!!!
