You mean tone knob on el. guitar, not on amp or som?
If it's on guitar, here's the deal. It had purpose in early ages when players had only guitar and not so great amp. When it's on full or 10,you have real tone from pickup. Turning it down you get less high freqs. It was great feature then. Today with lots of gear like pedals, preamps etc this pot loses its purpose but it stays like some witness to the time. Not on all guitars tho. -------------------- Youtube

I use it all the time. A lot of people thing it's useless but I like the versatility it gives me. If your tone is just too bright, maybe roll back a bit on the tone knob. Or you can go all the way down and get a muffled kind of tone which is really nice for an interesting lead thing. It has a lot of uses.

For much more of a moldier, and depressing sound for slow dark music I guess. But I really havent found tons of use for it. I will expermient and see if i can find out. O yeah muris. Its on the Electric guitar. -------------------- “Obey the principles without being bound by them.”

well slash from gnr uses his tone knob to create that signature sound on sweet child o mine, i mean he turns it down all the way and uses his neck pickup with full distortion. He does the same thing in velvet revolver's song "Fall to Pieces" off the Libertad album. So imitating slash is a good use for it i guess

Hahha, yeah I guess! And some are better than others. If you have really bright sounding pickups it can be useful to roll some treble off - if the pickups aren't so bright it can make everything just sound muddy. I never used a tone control until I got my Jem - a combination of bright pickups and a decent tone control means it adds versatility. If I back the tone all the way off on the bridge pickup it almost sounds like a semi-acoustic. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

If the tone knob isn't doing much get a tech to check the capacitor on it and maybe change it for a different value.
