Hi guys
I`m starting to reach my wanted amount of pedals:
I now have a tuner, overdrive, delay, octave, wah, powersupply and phaser (details will come later). I`m still planning on buying a volume pedal, and some kind of modulation or synth to play around with. At total, I presume the board will consist or 8-10 pedals (including powersupply).

1. Is at a really big advantage with a flightcase instead of a padded bag to carry the board in? Currently, I rehearse with my bands (meaning I move the board) 1-2 times a week, and maybe 1-2 gigs per month.

2. I am going to have both wah and volume, but I see for instance some two floor-boards only have room for one exp. pedal. What do you think about having all/one of the exp. pedals at the floor separated from the board?

3. Which pedals in amp and which in FX loop - I do of course want my modulation pedals in the FX loop and dist. in amp loop for best tone, but I`m a bit scared that this will lead to a lots of cable chaos..any ideas or suggestions?

4. Finally: Are there any "holy-grail pedals" that you will recommand? For instance a compressor...to my understandment, is the compressor`s task to increase sustain without colouring tone? Is this necessary? I have also thought about a noise gate, but for now I don`t play any kind of heavy metal, so the only annoying noise I have is when I boost my solos, so that doesn`t annoy me too much...

I `ll just edit the post if I forgot something tongue.gif

Thanks smile.gif

Pedals frustrate the hell out of me, ive reduced mine to a delay, chorus, fuzz, tuner and wah and still I get noise issues, unbelievable. I had all mine in a flight case but it was vey heavy and that case is now on ebay! I'd recommend a padded bag unless you are doing hardcore gig schedules.

It`s most probably the option I will land on, since they cost less as well.
About noise issues, could it be a bad link in your chain or bad cables etc? I have not tried with all of mine yet, but I`ve played with 6-7 pedals (not all engaged ofc) without noise.

Noise sources are bad power supplies, bad patch cables and the inductors from the Wah pedal...
Get a shielded fuel Tank like the Voodoo Lab Peal Power or the T.Rex FuelTank, use only good quality patch cables between the pedals and keep the wah a little away from the other pedals so that there is no interference!

I actually have the t-rex fuel tank, and I`m planning on buying mid- to high end patch cables for the rest of the pedals. No point with connecting expensive pedals with crappy cables right?

Regarding the wah wah, would it be a good idea to keep it off the entire board? Just have it on the side, or leave it at home when not needed for that sake..

I do it like this with my wah:

It is on the pedalboard and fixed on it with this velcro stuff (that's also on shoes or jackets, you know this hook-up tape). The patch cable between the wah and the next pedal is a bit longer so that I can take it off the board and put it on the floor next to the board when playing (it's best when the wah stands on even ground) and for moving arround I put the wah back on the board...

Doesn`t sound as a good idea, thanks for the tip!

How about a compressor, is this really needed? I have absolutely no experience with using compression while playing huh.gif

Yeah I know, ive got decent patch leads and have tried a few different power supplies and just batteries but its still there, I guess the gain stages on the Mesa (I think its got five in all) just tend to really exaggerate any noise.
Im going to stick the chorus and delay in the loop from now on and just have the tuner, fuzz and wah out front, that should keep things down a bit. smile.gif

This could sound nuts, but, how about changing these pedals for a Rocktron Intelliflex Unit?

Only buy the effects you need and not because others say they are essential! If you have no use for a compressor then don't get one.
Try to keep the signal chain as small as possible, every (unecessary) pedal in the chain will further decrease the sound quality!

That's right. Every cable you plug to a pedal makes the sign goes little weaker. So, you should think in doing it as small as possible if you don't really need it

It depends on the quality of the pedals. I would say if all your pedals are sturdy with good and firm knobs you can use a padded one too. If there are lots of plastic parts (power adapter, "weak" knobs, plastic parts on the pedals) then it's better to get a molded one. There is Behringer PB1000 that I think works great, I've seen it live and heard only good things from experienced musician. For the money you cannot go wrong. You just need to put a good power in it and you're set to go. For big number of pedals this pedalboard is well enough.

Flightcase isn't needed unless you plan to go touring and need to make sure that gear will be secure no matter what cargo space is in. If you don't use cargo space, and always keep a pedalboard in the car, or in the bus by your side, I would say it will only be worse, because in those moments you should travel as light as possible.

I think it's fine. I once had one to many pedals on my pedalboard (Boss BCB60) and had to put wah outside. It was a 30 seconds job, and it's still very normal to use everything. After gig, I put wah back in, close and go of stage. Not too much hassle. Doing this often is not big problem, but I say if you plan two expression pedals, get a larger one (like that Behr PB1000).

You are right about all things, and it's a good question. I used modulation and space effects in FX loop before, but now I don't anymore, I hate connecting 4 cables. Now I use pedal for distortion and make a clean sound on the amp. It works fine that way (although I'm aware distortion on the amp is better) but who cares. If I use my amp, I put everything in the front. On the other hand my Hiwatt DR103 doesn't have an FX Loop wink.gif Even if it had, I would put everything up front to clear up the "mess". I like things simple. This doesn't mean I think this is a general rule. Everybody have their own way of creating the tone they need, some people have quite opposite approach then this one, putting FX in the loop via rack system, and using distortion from the amp (possibly wah up front if they use one). So it's all getting down to experimenting with your amp, amps that you use frequently, and your own gear.

4. Finally: Are there any "holy-grail pedals" that you will recommand? For instance a compressor...to my understandment, is the compressor`s task to increase sustain without colouring tone? There aren't no universal holy grail pedals. You use what you need to get the tone that you want. The rule is generally to keep the signal path as clear as possible. Every pedal makes the sound worse, and every cable does that too. Longer cables tend to act as a lowpass filters too. If you want your signal natural, use only highest quality cables, patches, and hi quality analog pedals with true bypass. Digital pedals can also be very useful, but they are not sounding completely natural, specially cheaper ones.
