We were asked by a website if we could provide some photos of the mastering studio for publicity purposes. The ones we've sent them are hi-res but these are a few low res vrsions.

***Warning - you can see me in the photos so those of a nervous disposition and women, children and small animals may want to look away now ***

In this one you can see both of our hardware mastering EQs. The one I'm adjusting is our Great River MAQ 2NV and next to it is our Gyratek Gyraf XIV parallel passive EQ. You can also see our Tranzport which is great for scrubbing through mixes quickly.
Attached Image

This is the obligortory head and shoulders shot of me leaning on our ATC SCM pro monitors. They're 3 way so bass, mid and treble each has its own dedicated speaker.
Attached Image

Another adjusting the controls' type photo. This one focuses more on the compressors in the rack. The one I'm adjusting is an API2500 VCA comp. Below it is our Maselec optical compressor and above is a parallel high frequency shelf. On top of the rack is a Prism Orpheus ADC and a Lavry Black D11 DAC.
Attached Image

Final shot that hopefully gives some idea of how the the monitors are positioned away from the walls and with nothing between them and the listening position to form an equilateral triangle. (The listening position is actually in front of the desk with all the equipment turned around 180. This was reversed for the photos as the photographer thought it was more 'studio like'.)

Very cool Tony!
So in reality then, you situate yourself so you're facing away from the speakers?

No I still face the speakers Chris. If I have to adjust an eq/compressor etc it's close at hand. It might just be me but I find that I concentrate on the audio more and make
better decisions if the equipment isn't in front of me. This way I spend time listening and making notes rather than being distracted by all th pretty lights and meters. I only turn and face the desk when I'm editing and compiling. and I do a lot of that on 'phones so that I can hear the fine detail and then I just mute the speakers. I'm coming around to the idea of doing away with the desk and placing the gear in a floor rack next to my chair.

Tony, I wanted to do this for a long time but now I remembered. I made a post with the nicest studio in Bucharest and I wanted to share it with you too.

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=47452

What do you think about it?

Hi Cosmin,
I made a brief comment in your thread. I think it's good value for recording and mixing particularly if the price includes an experienced engineer.

The set up and equipment though isn't right for mastering though for lots of reasons. Also, mixing and mastering in the same studio, with the same equipment and monitoring and the same engineers just lacks objectivity. To be honest this isn't mastering, it's main bus processing. Still 50 Euros/hour for recording and mixing only is a good price.

Thanks for the input Tony! Well, our experience there occurred in 2011 with Voodoo, but I am aiming to record the new Days of Confusion album here while taking care of the mixing and mastering in the USA. We have a few options there and I am very curious to see what we'll be able to come up with as a finished product smile.gif

Hi Cosmin,
Unless you intend to spend time in the USA for the mixing sessions then I would advise against this. There are an awful lot of mixing and production decision during the making of an album. Some of these a good mix engineer can make by themselves but some are artistic and really require you to 'be there'. As you got on well with your studio in Bucharest and think the engineers there are good I'd stay with them. Same goes for mastering to a great extent - good communication is vital.

Thanks again for the input Tony smile.gif We have already worked with this dude -> www.jeffrorecordsyou.com for the 'Seeds' EP. His name is Jeffro Lackscheide and I think we obtained a nice product from him. I was also curious to hear your opinion on the EP - have you listened to it already?

If not, please take a look here -> http://www.deezer.com/ro/album/6147133

Sorry Cosmin I've not listened to your ep and I prefer not to comment on audio streams. If you want me to comment then please snd me a wave file.

As for your engineer - He appears not to have a studio but that's true of quite a lot of engineers when they're starting out but if you're happy with him then sure go for it.
Same goes for whomever you have as a mastering engineer.

Thanks Cosmin. I'll give the tracks a listen in the next few days once we've finished the project that's in the studio later today. Any track in particular that you want comments on?

No worries Cosmin.

How long it takes... Last critical listen we did that we timed took 3 3/4 hours inc. writing up a summary of our notes.

Do you want me to send the comments to your email rather than post them here?
