How Would One Learn How To Achieve Certain Sounds?

I'm using my pod x3 live to do some simple recordings of my riffs and songs, but i've never really been interested in tweaking sounds. I know some simple things, but if I hear a sound in my head or on an album I don't have a clue on how to go about getting close to that sound.
I'm trying to come up with a sound that is somewhat close to the guitarsound on the albums "Suicide by my side" (by Sinergy) and Follow the Reaper (by Children of Bodom).

They have sort of similar guitarsound (same guitarists), and it's very metallic and seems pretty heavy on the mids to me. Not very much bass. If anyone has heard these sounds, any ideas on how to get close to them?

You can't actually make exact copies of sounds, but you can try to get as close as you can. In order to do this you must know every modeling effect and amp on the POD inside out, and this requires that you sit down and do some tweaking. Tweaking needs practice, so if you are not familiar with it, you should start making some presets, and explore various presets on the POD. As with every skill, you will need to do some number of tweakings in order to make the sound right, so sit down every day and do some 30 minutes of tweaking, and after a while you will see that you can find the tones you are looking for with more ease. With tweaking you are becoming aware of how your device sounds and what are its limitations, so you can try to adjust it to your liking.

Yeh you just need to get to know your pod well, then see what gear the person your trying to copy uses, and see if there are simulations of any of it on the pod.
