According to the email I got it starts at 1:30 am here in Oregon.....Hope I can stay awake....I'm old man.... tongue.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jun 12 2009, 08:21 PM

Well that would mean 4:30am for me then I think. I might have to try and go to bed early so I can get up and check it out.

Posted by: skennington Jun 12 2009, 08:54 PM

They are 5 hours ahead of the US. Says it starts at 10am BST, for me on the east coast, that's 5:00 am, looks like I'll be getting up early in the morning I guess.. biggrin.gif

+infinity!

I hope I can either wake up that early, stay awake that late, or at least find enough recordings of the event(s) on youtube later. Very excited to see the performances.

When I woke up I had a vision of a sandwich: sandwich bread (2 slices), some Pita sauce (which is a bit spicy) on one of them, salad, Gouda cheese, tomatoes and finally some lyon sausage.

You want a bit of mine? My tummy is full, I can´t eat anymore. biggrin.gif

Go Muris !
I just saw this thread. How is Muris doing, how was his performance ?

Muris Did great. A couple of things about the competition in general though.....

I gotta say that I am really dissapointed in the way the crowd behaved......there was ZERO enthusiasm there. At one point in the show Stuart Bull kind of reprimanded them about it. If I didn't know better I would have thought that the audience was a bunch of senior citizens who thought that they were there to see an opera and didn't know how to behave or react at a rock concert so they just played it safe and kept their mouths shut. I really felt bad for the contestants. After EVERY performance there was like ZERO applause. Could you imagine going to see G3 and when Steve Vai takes the stage and opens with FTLOG that after the performance there is almost complete SILENCE!!!! Part of me agrees wonders if it was that the audience was just full of arrogant guitarists who were thinking "Yeah, I could do that.....they aren't that good".......Stuart Bull said as much at one time as well.

Muris did really well though......although I got a little worried because it looked like he was having trouble dialiing a delay setting he wanted. He did great though......although I'll be interested to hear his thoughts on this as far as dialing in his sound. I was really impressed by four of the contestants......

Muris......Daniele Gottardo......Jack Thammarat.......Hedras Ramos smile.gif

All four of these guys played MUSIC......the other contestants seems to just be doing a "shred clinic". It was early in the morning here so maybe I am off in this comment. Man.....I just can't get past the audience. Unbelievable.... mad.gif

Anyways......GO MURIS!!!!!\m/\m/

I don't think they should have chosen the winner just by votes.

Posted by: lcsdds Jun 13 2009, 04:34 PM

Thammarat did well.....I think Muris should have won hands down......but congrats to Thammarat.

When they announced the winner the Crowd.........did nothing. mad.gif

They didn't say who took second or third.....unless I missed it.

Good job Muris.....you should have won!!!! Have a safe trip home.......\m/\m/

I am sorry guys but where did you read about winners ? I went back to licklibrary website and I couldn't find anything on there.

How did Muris place? What about that Macedonian guy who plays Greg Howe style ?

Posted by: Marek Rojewski Jun 13 2009, 04:40 PM

Startear the audience choose their "idol". not the best player, this as You can see is a difference.

Posted by: lcsdds Jun 13 2009, 04:41 PM

From the licklibrary website:

Once the countdown timer reaches ‘0:00:00’ then the voting process will be CLOSED. The results of the online vote will count towards the overall votes that will be cast by the judges (whose decision is final) and the winner will be announced online on LickLibrary.com on Monday 15th June.

Maybe the announcement was just the popular/fan vote and there is still the judges vote.....they didn't say anything about this though....... mad.gif

Posted by: Marek Rojewski Jun 13 2009, 04:43 PM

Well, they said about "global vote winner".

I think when I voted 30 minutes before closing that it said final results will be published on MONDAY !
I might be wrong, thats why I am wondering whats happening. Can't find any info who won and how Muris did.

Muris was Technically, Tonally and Musically the best in the competition....Only guys that even came close were Hedras Ramos, Thammarat and Gottardo.

Posted by: Ivan Mihaljevic Jun 13 2009, 06:11 PM

I can't seem to find the results! Can anyone post a link?

And one more thing, can I see the videos somewhere? I found the Muris' take on YouTube, but can't find the other finalists and there are a couple more that I'd like to see!

Posted by: jafomatic Jun 13 2009, 06:51 PM

The crowd isn't wired for sound. The audio stream seems to be coming from a mixing board and there just isn't any crosstalk from the crowd or any sources that are listening to it.

Even a weak crowd would make more noise than this, clearly it's just an oversight on the part of the sound director.

I was thinking the same. Muris' take was really nice, although I missed those synth choirs from the original take. Somehow the mixing is weak, barely any bass and the drums are thin. Nevertheless, Muris is the winner for me

Posted by: kaznie_NL Jun 13 2009, 07:25 PM

That's to bad!!

But, I have something to say xD

the voters of this competition were "normal" human being, no guitar experts or real judges. And what do normal people want? They don't want ultra fast, very technical playing! They want something recognizable, easy and structured. I think Muris's balcan influences aren't something "normal" in the UK, and I gues that most of the voters were non-Balkan, so they thought Muris composition was ok, but to hard to be easy. Thamarat however, had a quite easy balad! Plain people want to hear straight simple, maybe even boring music! Musicians often know that classical music is way better, technical, melodic, and tonewise, then pop, but still everyone listens pop, and only a few listen classical music!!

I don't want to say Muris was worse or better then Thamarat, but I do think that voters are the ones that make the final decision. If your style isn't the same then the Votor's style, then it might get hard! But Muris, please don't become a boring pop writer, just do follow your style, and even if people don't like it, we do wink.gif

Posted by: skennington Jun 13 2009, 07:29 PM

Fantastic job Muris! You won in my book for sure. smile.gif I still think the final results won't be announced til Monday, so fingers crossed for you man.

Posted by: Marek Rojewski Jun 13 2009, 07:33 PM

Well Kaznie You are right on many points, but at the same time, some people will use the opposite criteria - most strange=most original=one to vote for. Other will vote for the most shredish-speed-exploding solo, because they will think "wow this guy is lighting fast, he must be really good". Many beginning guitarists were/are thinking that speed is the biggest "skill factor". It doesn't matter that it isn't true, many believe in it.

True, but I don't think voters vote for originality, or they do, but not only on that! You're right about the beginning guitarists, but who of the voters were guitarist?

I hope you are right about the sound and the crowd...... but even Stuart Bull at one point "reprimanded" the crowd. Judging by what I saw from the webcast the crowd wast totally LAME, APATHETIC and IMO DISRESPECTFUL!!!! ALL the contestants deserved WAY better treatment than the crowd gave them. I know this is like the 20th time I've mentioned the crowd but these guitarists came a long way and worked really hard to come play for them......you can't even clap A LITTLE BIT.... mad.gif mad.gif

Nice performance by Muris but I actually prefer his original recording. Like some of you mentioned, overall sound just wasn't the same, and it seems like everything came out trough the mixer. I guess there wasn't much preparation for performance with the actual bass player and drummer.

Guys lets not write Muris off yet, I am hoping on Monday we will see different final results then the ones you mentioned here !

It its true that stinks that Muris didnt win.

But, with that being said the biggest thing is the exposure. Which is more important to a hardcore guitarist like Muris.

The fact that Muris is competing on an international level with guitarists that in their own right are the up and coming superstars of guitar says alot!

The last two years i have declined to even enter. I know my limitations as a player, and i can't imagine what pressure these guys are under competing at this level.

Maybe next year i will throw caution to the wind and see where it leads me. But to be honest, i can't even imagine myself competing with Muris or any of the finalists. Heck, even making it thru the first few elimination rounds.

No matter what happend Muris is still tops in our book. ANd we have him all to ourselves smile.gif

The competition in this contest is VERY tough...

I don't if what they announced is the final results, but either way, Muris, Daniele Gottardo and jack Thammarat, all were extremely impressive.

The competition isn't a "who got the best technique" competition, but rather who can write the best guitar piece for this competition.

This is just my opinion about the three:

Muris - Best technique and most original composition, but on the other hand the backing was pretty monotone and boring(atleast to my ear).

Gottardo - Best backing, really cool sounding chord progression, and he displays incredible technique, but his composition is pointless to my ears, he's just shredding it up with little to none melodical ideas behind it.

Thammart - Not too impressive technique wise, nor on the originality, but his composition is the most flowing one, it's very catchy, just like Gustavo Guerra's composition in last year's competition, so I'm not surprised he won.

Did you go see it live Bondy? smile.gif

Posted by: wrk Jun 14 2009, 10:39 AM

First of all i think it was awesome that the show was streamed live. I was exited and stressed for the performer i saw (didn't saw the end thought). It's somehow different to follow this in realtime as to see it later on youtube.

I found the mix really dry and the guitar mainly too loud, not for the advantage of each player. Every detail could be heard... makes some performances even more impressive imo.

As being a Muris fan, it's hard for me to be objective and give other player a fair chance .. laugh.gif, but i was impressed by Thamarats performance as well. I can not really agree that his composition is an "easy ballad". Jack is hiding his skills and shred lines quite well in his compositions. He has a really soft and fluid playing style. Considering that his composition is a 160bpm track, some lines are getting quite complicated to play the way he does.

I voted Muris 1st and Jack 2nd. I don't get why the winner was not announced direct after the show, what needs so long to take decision? Can't remember, but last year is was on the same day, or not?

I played Race With Destiny by Vinnie Moore. That year we were allowed to play covers. There is a video but really bad quality. That was recorded with some very strange camera by a friend of mine. The file is 600mb (7 min clip) and I have never found a codec that can convert it to something else but smaller.

What did you think of the experience Emir??? Was there a lot of pressure?? If I was ever in one of those competitions I see myself walking out on stage.....plugging my guitar in......looking up at the crowd.......crapping my pants......then exiting stage left.... tongue.gif laugh.gif

I'd become a youtube LEGEND.......Just not the kind of legend I'd want to be..... tongue.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

haha, no man there was no pressure. I was going through a really hard time that year. The fees for my school were really high and I had to find a way to pay it. I was all alone in the UK. The reason I applied for that competition was only to win. I was pretty confident. The song was really hard though. When I've done it I sold all the stuff I got and paid the university. If I had the money I would have never enter such thing.

It is always mentioned everywhere but I am not sure whether it helped in the career. When someone reads about it maybe they give me more respect but I still cost the same when I play a gig smile.gif

And yes, I think I rocked that place. Some famous guitar magazines wrote about it. Also to mention that the competition was called "Guitar Hero UK" that year and it wasn't international. Then they changed the name to Guitar Idol.

This year the online voting decided about the overall winner and the rest was the judges choice. Not really fair. I knew that online voting would result that Chinese or similar can only win. If only his street clicked, there you have 100.000 votes if not more smile.gif

Classic Emir laugh.gif

Anyhow, thanks A LOT for your support guys and let me tell you what.,
one guy from Lick Library told me that I was 2nd by votes
which means you guys did a hell of a job so my huuuge appreciation! smile.gif

So, contest is over, one more experience in my bag
but unfortunately it was pretty similar like the last year,
no sound check and I HATE to waste someone else's time tweaking the amp
so I just plugged in, did few turns and that it.
But that was not the end of all troubles. biggrin.gif
Backing track (synhts, some loops etc ) was so LOUD in monitors,
I barely heard my self playing in chorus section, when choir is on.
And what I hear now, there was almost none backing in master mix,
it sounds so poor, the whole song. sad.gif
Crowd was great actually!!
They were shouting all the time but there were
no ambience mics to pick that!!

And yeah, I had no idea that online votes would decide the winner.
If I knew that I probably wouldn't apply in a first place,
imo that is job for well trained musicians and not for everyone,
to make that kind of decisions.
I do understand them whatsoever, they need more traffic online
to get more sponsors but you should have said
that online voting is most important and not the judges.
I won this Blackstar amp and I still have no clue was it because of
the votes or judges. laugh.gif

Great to see you back here Muris and congrat's anyway. I'm just not sold on GI any more. I love the fact that they streamed it for everyone to watch, but the online voting thing just don't do it for me.

I could tell you had no prep time before you plugged in and thought you did a fine job in spite of that. smile.gif I hope soon there will be a true sanctioning competition judged by professionals in which you and some of our other instructors get more exposure. cool.gif

I do think the more your name is mentioned, the better the opportunity for you to get a major label interested so the time was not wasted for sure. Anyway, we all love you here bro, keep rocking!

Seems a bit lame that there isn't a sound check, a bit unprofessional maybe. The videos are up on lick library now of all the contestants. The sound in general is pretty poor, shame really as the performances themselves are obviously pretty good.

I didn't know that online voting would decide the winner, I thought it was like the online heats where online voting helped but at the end the judges decided who wins.

I missed the online webcast, I was out all day with the family and had a gig at night, I didn't vote, it could have probably made a difference if it is like they say that it was only by 2 votes.

That's a shame really. One of my goals for my practicing is to get good enough to write a song to get to the finals of guitar idol. It will probably never happen, but it keeps me motivated to practice. For me, the prize would be being able to play on stage there.

I very rarely get a chance to play infront of people, and I've never played something I'd really want to play, as I'm heavily into melodic shred etc. but obviously very few musicians want to play this sort of stuff, let alone actually can play it. This is why I don't really play in bands anymore, because I'm tired of doing the same old covers or writing the same old indie/punk/metal songs.

Does anybody know how the heck the judging was done for this competition?????

One of the other forums I get on said that it was determined by these guys???

I thought it was chosen by the "popular" online vote.......I'm confused.

Muris.....what were you told.....obviously going into the competition you thought the winner would be determined using a different method than was actually used.

those guys picked 8 players for the finals during online finals
and they also decided some players for online finals along with public pick.
But I don't know who were judges in the finals.

So was the finals that you played in last saturday determined by a combination of the online popular vote AND judges???

It wasn't combination, at least not for the title
cause winner was decided by public votes only as far as I know.
Rest of the prices were decided by judges tho.
I would have done it the other way around. smile.gif

This came straight off the email I recieved...

The Guitar Idol 2009 live final was broadcast exclusively as a webcast on our website as Licklibrary's coverage gave users the opportunity to participate in not only watching the live final but a unique chance to vote and help decide the winner.
Thousands registered and voted and alongside the judges helped crown Jack Thammarat as this year's winner.

You can now watch all the high quality videos online and for FREE. When you're done why not contribute to the show further by commenting on the performances on the newhttp://ss34.on9mail.com/sendlink.asp?HitID=1245344738193&StID=5687&SID=6&NID=114836&EmID=8849084&Link=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5saWNrbGlicmFyeS5jb20vQ2hhbm5lbHMvR3VpdGFyLUlkb2w%3D.

When I was leaving the show on Saturday and just about to get in my car in the car park I looked behind me and following was Stuart Bull from Licklibrary, I still didnt know the result then so as he was getting in the car next to me I decided just to ask him how it went and what the results were.

According to him the Judges had Jack Thammerat in first place, cant remember who they had second but the judges scores had Muris in third place, the online vote pretty much followed the same pattern as the judges but the online votes (and I guess this is where you awesome GMC`ers came in smile.gif ) promoted Muris to a second spot smile.gif

Generally, talking to him they were very happy that the way the judges and online voting system worked and how it seemed to follow a similar trend so they felt that the final overall placings were spot on.

Pretty sure that they will either follow the same format next year or perhaps even do away with the floor judges all together and stick with online votes, who knows, they change the rules pretty much every five mins anyways laugh.gif

I think it should be judges only personally, else ye olden 'battle of the bands' rules start to apply - whoever brings the most friends wins. Which is lame when it's a contest of skill, not popularity.

I agree also, however there will always be a point of contention, at the end of the day you enter these things more for the publicity and exposure, imo Muris doesnt need a panel of judges to say he`s the best, we all know that to be fact smile.gif

I thought from watching the videos on the guitar idol site that the only people that stood a chance of winning was either muris or jack thammarat, so I suppose it worked out about right.

I have to say that I would of thought muris would have taken it, as although jack is an amazing guitarist, his style does remind me alot of other people. The moment I heard his track intro, I thought eric johnson, and then when it kicked off with the main part it sounded a lot like satriani and at times I could almost think I've heard it somewhere before.

However, muris' composition seems much more original. The only bit that I thought reminded me of something else was the little instrumental intro before muris starts playing on his entry video, which I reminded me of dire straits - ride across the river (think that's the track name), hehe.

ok i know im late to the party,
this is my first time watching (sorry muris i love you but just didnt grab the chance)

is it me, or is the first place guy (jack's) playing very boring.

Muris had a something jack didnt....a melody...thats square one of shredding and solo guitar playing....it sounding like jack was just improvising, but muris had an actual song....maybe thats why he won, he did more noodling than muris did

Posted by: AdamB Jun 19 2009, 05:25 PM

I think he's playing basically the same as his entry video. Just that the thing that was really good about his entry was the tone of the guitar, rather than the melody itself, I suppose. I think in the live show that didn't come accross because of the sound issues and he started to sound a bit average. In fairness, he is very good, though. Just it's hard to look so good when your up against other great players.

But I guess it's more about the actual playing there, I'd kill to be able to play at that show. I suppose I'll just have to keep raging against my metronome...

My life would be fulfilled if, by "just improvising", i could come up with a song like jack's solo. laugh.gif
I think thats the beauty of music that people hear the same song differently. I found this song extremly melodic and very well structured.

In my opinion, this song follows satriani's approach to write instrumental guitar music not only for guitar player .. smile.gif

I think that's the same song, and it's very pretty sounding here.

Totally agree with you here Andy. I've always said I'd rather have Vai's chops but Satch's songwriting skills.

EVERY ONE that competed at GI 09 was a world class player IMO. There is no objective way to judge who was the best.

Congrats again on making the finals Muris......Your performance ROCKED...\m/\m/

In my opinion it's totally stupid to compete in guitar playing - but hey, it's kinda fun and it sure is a showcase for new talents. But when the push comes to shove, it's all about the ability to transmit and "speak" your own language to the audience. E.g - you must have something to say!

We all likes different styles and kind of music, but what really excites me and got me to pick up the guitar 35 years ago - is the energy in music, and that cannot be either taped, recorded or learnt (in the meaning of feeling, technique can anyone acchieve). For me, music is really a "live" and improvisation thing, it should be fun to see a competion where the contestant doesn't know the tunes in advance biggrin.gif

One thing that I realized during the years, is that the "attitude" you play something with is far more important than the actual notes you play. We all can learn tricky scales, fast runs and so on - it's just a matter of practice, but the attitude to music (and also life) comes from deep inside and reflects one's state of mind in the best cases. To be a good musician is to learn about life and be able to transform it to other people. At least in my opinion.

Excuse me for beeing a little philosophic here, I wish all the contestants that were competing all the luck in the future. They were all great in their own way!!!

Some very nice lines you wrote Staffy!

Yeah, it'd be nice to see all players improvising
over unknown backing but that'd need even more time,
we had no time for sound check whatsoever. smile.gif

Posted by: Staffy Jun 20 2009, 09:24 AM

Thanks Muris! It's a pity that You did'nt get any time to perform soundchecks and so, but I guess that the sponsors are focused on other things things than the competition itself. Anyway I like your entry, it sounds a little balkan to me (I played a lot of greek music back in the old days, but on keyboards). It gives the song a nice touch and brings in other influences than just pure metal and speed into the music. I like this a lot!!!!

Hi Muris!

I watched the contest and for me everyone is a winner! I belive that there is to much 'bad talk' in the guitar world like 'I'm better, they are a rip off, I play faster etc.' Jack was great, played very well (as all others) and it was it's turn to get on top.
I also want to congrattulate you because you are truly a great musician! You have a great ear for melodies and your technique is top. But more than that you help people and that is a characteristic that no Guitar Idol or any contest can give you. Tnx!

Pozdrav,

Denis.

GO FOR IT MURIS!

BRING THE GOLD HOME Man!!!1

After watching all of the contestants.... I have a couple things to say.

First of I don't think it was far at all to not have a soundcheck.

That in itself is already walking into a dark room.

@ Muris: I really think the only reason you didn't win, was the sound.
I'm saying this from a neutral perspective. Both you and Jack had really good entries. The main reason i think he won, was that he had the overall best sound on the stage. If you and everyone else had the time to do a sound check and get everything fine tuned, this competition would have been different for sure. The tone you had on your youtube entry and the one you had live, there was just no comparison there .

I liked Danielle again this year aswell.

Dont have much more to add.

Oh and the online voting thing sucks imo. smile.gif

Very well said guys, they are all great players
and if there was sound check the whole event would look and sound a lot better!!
Better, faster, more melodic...no one can tell, it's music. smile.gif

I just read that Daniele Gottardo won the "GI 09 Steve Vai" award.....

Anybody know what the heck this is? Does he get to play a show with Vai or does he just get a trophy or something? I wasn't aware there were any more awards..... ohmy.gif
