Being a super strat guy, having 4 guitars of that genre, I have some serious gas for something different.
I may have a deal coming up regarding a ESP Eclipse 1 from 2005(not LTD). It's in nice condition what I can see from pics and from the seller description.
I have played one many years ago and remember it being very comfortable and of high quality. Anyone here have an Eclipse? Please share your thoughts if you do. I like fast, thin necks.
What worries me a little is weight and upper fret access. It's supposedly thinner than Gibson LP's which for me is a good thing. So it may be nice with a LP- style guitar with some strat properties.

For the Super Strats, the ESP Eclipse does have a sweet feel to it and can be a shredder's dream axe!
I however personally prefer the ESP Horizon over it and the 2nd makes, plus neck-thrus not bolt-ons.

After playing the real ESP guitars, there's no going back to an LTD...

For the ESP Eclipse 1:

I found the edges to be a bit rough for my playing styles (blues, rock, metal, and mostly shred).
Over the Gibson LP, you will find yes it's thinner and therefore faster after you have gotten use to it. The range of playing style might reduce a bit, but if your targeting a certain hardcore style, go for it.

I would suggest:

If you're a lead player get the Horizon. The upper fret access is amazing and you can shred the entire fret board. Jumbo frets adds even more to this.

If you're a rhythm player get the Eclipse. For the edges, you will find it's much better if playing standing up. Sitting down can be a little problem for some depending on your positioning.

It basically comes down to whether you want active EMG or passive Duncan pickups? Duncan's give a much larger dynamic range, but actives have a great fast attack.

I ended up getting a ESP M-II with EMG-JH custom pickups, it's extremely hard to put down. I personally wanted active pickups, but just hate how they kill dynamics of slower playing. So got something of both worlds, my only dislike I have of it is that they can smudge and can scratch easy, they sound pretty amazing. The sustain is killer!

Your best bet is to play them all for a good while, if it draws a crowd in the guitar shop and you end up spending 4+ hours there playing at the loudest volume allowed till your beading in sweat, then your got yourself a keeper! Then go to the 2nd hand one and see if it's in good nick or not, fret board not warped, wiring not shot, etc. Also, ask the reason behind selling it. If it's truly a beast, they won't want to be selling it without a good reason.

Thanks for the reply!

My problem is i live in the North of Sweden and have no guitar shop with decent inventory to test guitars. The guitar I'm thinking of buying is located 1500 km away. So no way to test it there either.

I already have a custom guitar which is pretty much based on the horizon, the Ztevies Blue in my signature.
Then i have a old hot rodded Squire strat with Dimarzio Injector set. That covers strat spank tones i occasionally play plus gainy strat tones.
Then i have two Peavey Vandenbergs that i would like to call the mother model of superstrats. smile.gif
What i like about them is that they have very fast, slim necks. They're quality builds all through. And they are 24.75" scale which seem to be my taste.
I think I've got enough of real super strats so now I'd like a different kind of guitar like an Explorer or LP type but with the shorter scale and towards the playability of a superstrat.
Regarding pickups this one has the emg 81/60 combo. That's not very important, i have swapped pickups in every guitar I've ever owned. If i buy this one I'll give the emg's a chance, but I'm kind of gasing for the BKP Rebel Yells...
I've had the 81/89 combo in a Schecter once, they were ok but i feel passives generally have a more organic, lively feeling.
How would you rate the upper fret access on the eclipse? I find myself going a lot up toward 17-20th fret so it's a plus if it's at least decent.
I'll sleep on it, i promised to get in touch with the seller tomorrow. It's a problem with no try before buy, but there's no other option and ive always had luck in the past with honest sellers.

Hey guys, great stuff here! Azzaboi has shared very valuable info about ESP guitars and his suggestions are very reasonable. I haven't used one of those guitars in the past but I have two Les Paul guitars (Gibson & Fernandes) and Azzaboi is right regarding playability.

It's a pity that you can't try before buy your guitars... I think that doing a trip to a city where you can try them could be a very good investment to be sure that you are going to buy the right guitar.

I totally agree with Gabriel here - the thing is that, I came to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter what sort of a guitar you get, AS LONG as you two fit together like a glove smile.gif So, testing before you get the axe is crucial, in my opinion. I never did and I never will buy something so personal like a musical instrument, before first testing it myself.

I totally understand your point of views, but.... I think a big majority of guitarplayers live in, or close to bigger cities where they can find decent shops to try guitars in. So I understand why the advice is to try it in person. I live in a small city in the North of Sweden. If I drive car for 2,5 hours(one way) I can find a couple of mediocre music stores where they have really cheap crappy stuff + a few Fenders, Gibsons and Schecters. If I want to try this particular used guitar I would have to travel by plane and train for a cost of around 500 €uro.
This is simply not an option right now. If this guitar is not for me I'll just resell it

I still appreciate some input to my original questions regarding playability and other opinions on this particular guitar. I'm not looking for a superstrat either, something different in shape but with thinner neck than a Gibson LP and a 24.75" scale. The Eclipse seem to fit the bill specs-wise.

In case of tone/hardware/precision I had good experiences with ESP but...my friend vocalist had one ESP/LTD EC400 and yes - the neck was thin but also very flexible...too flexible and it tends to deform. After one refretting and fretboard leveling the guitar did deform again. It was never ending issue. We sold it.

Ouch, that's bad!
But surely this must be one rotten egg in the basket. The ltd 400 is also one of the budget models i believe? Ltd 1000 gets nice reviews and even more so the "real" Esp eclipse.
I must say that if i get this guitar it will probably be my most thick-necked guitar i have. My Vandenbergs ar really thin and their necks have never warped or shown any sign of trouble.
And here in the north we go from at most -35c in the winter to +30 in the summer. With humidity changes just as extreme. No problems with any guitar so far...

I wish You all best with Your specimen. Also I would like to point the "other side". If I would get this guitar for a month of test I would write only good things. First impression is very good. But this guitar was owned for a year or two so I know what then happens through time...sad.gif I wish I could admit the truth to Your words. I hope Your guitar will deny this bad memory smile.gif))

Marketing info on Eclipse if needed; This is the model that was sued because of the design being too similar, Gibson won the case and ESP moved on with eclipse 2 by making small changes in body.

The full thickness ones are the most looked after (and rare) while thinner models aren't valued very highly. For the money, I'd suggest go for it if you have good deal compared to other sellers prices, just consider incase you would want to change it in the future and not loss much/any money while doing this.

Surely if ESP had a general problem with necks it would be well known by now? Its not exactly a new model and there are many thousands out there. It seems to be a popular guitar and it get rave reviews, and i haven't seen any mention of neck problems? On the contrary, two statements I've read a lot is "built like a tank" and "superior fretjob and setup from factory". This goes for ESP not generally for LTD's.
Of course, once in a while every brand and model have a few ones that get problems. This is regardless of price and brand. For example, Gibson have a reputation of bad QC once in a while.
Anyway, the price for this one is ok, i won't lose very much money, if any at all, reselling.

My statements were in reply to Darius regarding the neck problems he mentioned.
I know there are two thicknesses of eclipse, but this is regarding body? There's the normal one with a thinner body than normal LP and then there's the model with FT in the model name (Full thickness) This one i may buy is the normal one which i prefer.

Regarding model names it's a jungle of models. In US they had to make some changes as you mentioned and they are all called version II. Elsewhere you can buy model I or II even if they are pretty much identical to the different version II in US. Except some changes that were made to the Us versions. 3 buttons, different cutaway etc...

So a few days shipping and yesterday it arrived. It's in very nice condition. No fretwear or dings/nicks at all. Low action and setup well. First impression is that this is a real quality guitar. Haven't played it much but the EMG 60 in the neck sounds great after I raised it closer to the strings. Sparkly and tight but still not harsh, great for clean and creamy solos.
I often feel neck pickups get to muddy and bassy but this one is better. The 81 in the bridge is nothing special. Tight and hot, yes, but i miss some organic, dynamic feeling passives have. We'll see if I'll replace those with passives later on.
This guitar is incredibly light, probably lighter than any of my other superstrats. Not very common for a LP-type gitarr. It still has nice sustain and seems sturdy enough. Neck is nice and thin, thinner feel than I expected.
So first impression is good, but two things stand out as not so good compared to my other guitars, altough they were expected:
- upper fret access is not the best. Of course I'm used to 24 fret superstrats with excellent access.
- I find the extra jumbo frets hinder playability a bit, like they're in the way when moving sideways. Again, i have medium frets on all my other guitars, so it was expected. I will get used to it surely. After 2 hours of playing i feel I've adapted some already.

Spectacular collection biggrin.gif How are those Vandenberg guitars? I heard about the guy a lot, but never actually heard a thing about those guitars..

Thanks!
The Vandenberg guitars are IMO the mother of all superstrats.
Thin and fast neck, but still different from ibanez Wizard thin. Made in USA between 1989-1991. 24 frets, 24.75" scale. They are extremely well made and allows loooow string action without any buzz or noise. What i especially like about the Vandys is the violin cut in the body. Very cool! smile.gif
The standard ones were made in 3 editions with only minor differences. Then you have a couple of more expensive versions: Puzzle, Custom and Quilt Top Custom. What I've got is a standard (the red one) and a Quilt Top Custom(Wine red). The standard is alder body, bolt on maple neck with ebony fretboard. Quilt top is all mahogany with neck thru and rosewood board.
The idea with the Quilt top was to have a Les Paulish tone in a strat.
Quilt top is my favourite. Very nice fat tone with sustain for days, like a top of the line LP, but with the playability of a nice comfy superstrat including great access to upper frets and all that.
I got my first Vandy back in -95 and nothing I've tried since can really measure up. It's the perfect guitar for me anyway.
There's a kind of cult following for these guitars. Not many people nowadays know much about them., but the people who do are fanatics and swear by them. There's even a group on Facebook with a small group of hardcore fans.
I'd recommend anyone who spot one of these to test play. They come on eBay sometimes. Some people made real scores in pawn shops cause the shops don't know what they're selling, they see Peavey and think it's a 200 dollar guitar. A standard on eBay can be bought for around 700-900 dollars which in my view is very small money for the quality you get. The Quilt top is twice that, and the Puzzle which is very rare is even more expensive. Prices in Europe is much more expensive.

Edit: After Adrian Vandenberg left Peavey they tried to follow up the success of this guitar with another version called V-type. They are similar in look with more bling, but they were not in the same league as the original. I've never tried one but people who did says they are ok guitars but they are sometimes referred to as Vandenberg guitars on eBay and other places. Some people try to get more money selling them like this. Be aware, they are not the real deal and the price should reflect that.
