For all I know, stevie ray is the king of blues guitar. I guess some people would agree with that. So he sat at his throne, reigning probably, preaching blues until he died in 1990. But I can't think of a single guitar player who, after 1990, even saw a glimpse of that blues guitar throne and of course no one sat on it. Or am I wrong? Where there great blues guitarists after stevie ray? Okay there probably where people like clapton, moore,.. but they are no match to stevie ray vaughn. He would blow them off stage if he weren't such a nice guy.

But seriously, please tell me who was a great blues guitar player after 1990? Did the blues die togheter with stevie ray or has stevie ray shown us everything the blues can do for you and is that why no one can be a blues icon anymore after stevie. I'm curious

I would say there are lots of great blues players before SRV, he is not a king of blues, but he is definitely on of the biggest rock-blues guitar legends.
BTW Clapton played blues back in the 60ties..

I like SRV, but also like the sound of Robben Ford and he is still alive and kicking. Try iy out!

Some great players out there at the moment mate, check out Aynsley Lister, Oli Brown, Walter Trout, Buddy Whittington, Joe Bonamassa...........
SRV was a legend but the blues will live on, evolve and continue to spawn the greatest musicians.

Ive seen you masterclass guys play some really nice guitar too by the way. There's no lack of talent in the world... but there's no such thing anymore as really big rockstars I think, except for those older bands like metallica, acdc

who wrote all those blues songs that for instance eric clapton and gary moore play, oh and stevie ray vaughn. I keep discovering that they all play a lot more coversongs than they seemed to do. I know some are BB kings; robert johnson and in srv´s case stevie wonder, jimi hendrix, the beatles, johnny winter. Were there blues legends from the past who where really known for their writing songs skills (guitar + lyrics).

And who wrote 'further on up the road' ?

And are any of these songs not written by stevie ray himself: couldnt stand the weather, look at little sister, tightrope , texas flood, leave my girl alone, willy the wimp.

After jimi hendrix and the beatles, BB king seems to have the most songs people cover from him (that I know): everyday I have the blues, thrill is gone, going down... right? Those are really great songs.
If I would learn a lot of those blues legend classics (+a big lot of SRV) would I have a good chance on being able to quit my job and make enough money for a normal living by playing them in pubs, or even bigger, maybe even be a sort of full time hired evening entertainment-guitarist somewhere. if of course I play them well enough and with some band or with a backing track (nah, boring!). Does anyone have this kind of job or know someone? I'm very very curious

Wich countries are best to live in when you have that kind of job? I'm thinking Ireland maybe, but Ive never been there



Oh yeah, another thing: WOULD ANYONE RECOMMEND ME TO GO TO STEELY DAN LIVE IN CONCERT NEXT MONTH. Did anyone see them recently, last 10 or 20 years :-) ?

Thing is with blues mate is that a lot of the songs are generic and have been passed down through generations of players, songs such as Dust My Broom (thought to be Robert Johnson's) have been traced back forty years or so before Johnsons time, this is a unique aspect of blues were the songs dont really belong to a single artist but belong to the genre, hence why you hear them by several players, they are not covers as such but just artists versions of those songs, John Mayer has done a version of Everyday I have the Blues for instance!
As for quitting and being a blues performer, it must be the hardest genre of music to make a living out of, blues by its nature was born of poverty, slavery and dereliction and those traits can be echoed by the performers of today. Although I do beleive it is due a resurgence (It never goes away!) thanks to players such as John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa and even Seasick Steve, but I cant think of a more rewarding music to play so go for it!
Clapton once said he had two ambitions, to sleep with 10,000 women and to bring an audience to tears with a single note in a blues solo, I beleive he is still working on both!

I took some time to listen to walter trout today. I liked it from the first note to the last. His sound is a lot like SRV. The first song was full of 7#9 chords. So instead of falling in sleep peacefully, like I intended to, I grabbed my guitar again. This walter trout guy sure plays some nice chords, they sound very full, like they have everything they need. I'll keep an eye out for if he ever does a concert nearby... I'll defenitely be there. Same for Bonamassa... I'll explore him tomorrow

I think the blues did die in a way with him. Yes there are other artists like people listed but none of them can touch names like Stevie ray or Clapton in my books.

But blues dont die !

My opinion on that matter has drastically changed overnight. But sill... yeah. There is something mindblowing about his/their style. If I would imagine me at one of their concerts I just know my mouth would be wide open,
If I imagine playing those songs that well and without much thinking and even with a big croud that adores you.... could be just about the best feeling I can think of...

song style that I mean: srv - taxman, couldnt stand the weather
walter trout - put it right back
hendrix - voodoo chile
with that amount of energy. man, I love that sound


of course the other songs , even the more bluesy feeling songs can have simular effects; but still it is a fact : that particular sound has been on my mind a lot lately, especially the srv songs, but now walter trout reminded me of that again. taxman and put it right back, are about the same songs in a different phrase pattern with same chords, even have the same rythme , bpm I think

anybody know that srv song on a dvd playing live, where he changes guitars because string broke without stopping , srv plays on while roadie hangs new guitar on srv's shoulder and before it is even attached he starts the solo while the roadie enjoys his greatest moment in life. I forgot, otherwise I would post it

I guess my point is that nowdays you dont get as many amazing artists as back in the day - i also enjoy the rawness of the earlier blues
