GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Speed Picking Close Up Right Hand

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 3 2012, 02:33 AM

I shot this as a test of my new guitar cam but then I realized it shows a good bit of what the right hand is doing when it's picking briskly and gives an angle that you don't get looking straight on.

Take a look and watch the angle of the hand, picking motion, economy of strike arch, etc. and see if you can cull some secrets of Shred!

I see how you do it now! I'm trying to do it, but my right hand isn't my dominant hand, so I struggle getting the motion smooth. It kinda just goes all over the place laugh.gif

START SLOW! smile.gif That's the real secret to be honest. I played this type of thing at a snails pace during several movies until I could keep good form and not look at the neck. Then the speed sorta happened by itself. Handy!

Good plan! Here is my practice vid from tonight watching GHOST BUSTERS.

Do you think it would make a difference what kind of movie you are watching ?? biggrin.gif

If it's a horror then you might keep jumping and screwing up your flow..

If it's a romantic movie you may just settle into a slower and slower pace until you stop..

If it's action you might get too pumped up and put loads of muscle into it..

So, the question is:

What's the perfect type of movie/programme to watch whilst cycling technique ? laugh.gif

Dramas, you have a little bit of everything. Lots of talking where you can see you are staying in time and it looks right. Just till something happens and you speed up with excitement as your approaching a climax!

I've been watching Breaking Bad with my playing.

Action! The rat-a-tat-tat of machine gun fire can substitute a metronome blink.gif

Posted by: Ben Higgins Aug 3 2012, 04:26 PM

Both very valid suggestions. cool.gif

What about a long historical epic..? Not too exciting that it makes your pick fly out of your hand and not too schmoozy, romantic that it makes you all warm inside and forget to play.. wink.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Aug 3 2012, 04:36 PM

I suggest the Twilight movies...

Posted by: WeePee Aug 3 2012, 05:14 PM

Can't play the guitar while watching movies. I have to hold my wife's hand and with other hand I'll eat popcorn or drink.

Haahaha cool.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 3 2012, 08:16 PM

Good question! smile.gif I usually watch movies I've seen before when practicing. Don't need to be too distractced!

I'd say longer films like LORD OF THE RINGS work well as they let you practice longer without realizing your doing it smile.gif

Any TRILOGY works for the same reason. Even if not a trilogy.

1.)Star Wars
2.)Lord of the Rings
3.)Terminator

But I gotta say GHOSTBUSTERS make a great practice movie! Good pacing smile.gif

Egad man! Why would you even suggest such a thing?

Posted by: casinostrat Aug 3 2012, 11:38 PM

I practice a lot while watching old westerns. Since you pretty much know whats going to happen in all of them, you can practice and not be too distracted! smile.gif

Posted by: SirJamsalot Aug 4 2012, 12:38 AM

Foreign movies with subtitles. Reading really while playing really exercises the motor memory skills biggrin.gif

The problem about practicing while watching a movie is that you should be alone, otherwise the other person might not really enjoy the movie ;-) But yeah, practicing in front of the tv is a classic! Did it myself last night, while watching "Unknown Identity", boring movie, but my playing was good ;-)

Very True smile.gif Can you imagine it? Your watching a movie with your gal, "Hey babe, I"m gonna shred non stop while we watch this flick ok?" hehehehe.

if you get a chance, record some of your practice while movie watching! I'm sure everyone else would like to see as well. I recorded this chunk during ghost busters and you can actually hear the dialogue in the background as the mics were still on. hehehehe.

That would be awesome smile.gif Imagine if you could plug in right at your chair and hear the movie and your guitar in a pair of headphones. Maybe some control knobs or an ipad for controlling settings attached to the chair? And a mute button for the film should it get lame so you could just play guitar until the chase scene smile.gif

National Movie Guitar Practice Day! I can see it smile.gif

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Aug 18 2012, 10:48 AM

I would have liked Wesley Snipes to be in it but he went to prison for non payment of taxes otherwise he may have been in the 1st one.
