GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Why Do You Like Your Music?

Posted by: Martin la guitarra Feb 21 2008, 08:50 PM

well, for me music styles goes by from time to time, sometimes I listen to trash metal and sometimes to rock. Even though I consider myself as a pure headbanging listener i also have time when I listen to pop and rap. Why is that so that we sometimes switch music interest to another, is it a emotional thing?

And if you said yes to the question, well why, does rock, metal, pop or rap and many more stands for something special? Could it be that YOUR experience from your life affects your music interest, I mean that trash metal stands for suffering and pop stands for happiness?

Please, motivate your answer, and please put some of your favourite songs up here and tell us why you like them.

Mood or emotion doesnt seem to matter for me. I can listen to hip hop, folk, black metal, blues, jazz, classical and electronica in one day without noticing any difference. I like pretty much everything, I dont know why.
For me, black metal or thrash metal is the same thing as blues or jazz etc.. its all just great music.
I dont feel that black metal is more heavy than Edvard Grieg or anything else.
I just like the music I like. I can listen to pop music right after listening to black metal without any change in the mood or anything like that.

Very tough but interesting question... smile.gif
The only answer I can give is: I dont know why I like what I like, I just do laugh.gif laugh.gif

Well i love Metal for much, partly because of what its done for me. When i was growing up, i didnt have such an easy childhood, and i had no one to turn to for my problems. So, i discovered Metal, At first it was Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Metallica, ect. But it grew over time, For about 5 or 6 years, My only real motivation to be alive was well....Metal. I started listening to Thrash, Black, Death, Folk, Viking, Power, Symphonic, Goth, and Progressive Metal, anything i could get a hold of. I just got so emotionally connected to it, Whether it be a place i can always turn to for problems, or because i could relate to the songs strongly, or i just plain loved it. about 2-3 years ago, i got my "Problems" settled, and since then i have never wanted to even think about life without Metal, I just grew to love it more and more ever day, appreciating every single bit of it.

Lastly, Metal, and i believe this to be FACT, the single most diverse genre of music. You can easily hear influences from Opera, to Blues, Jazz, Classical, Reggae, Flamenco, Rock N' Roll, Cultures from every country and it all combines to create such a wonderful atmosphere. From the dark and ominous, yet incredibly beautiful riffs and melodies of Opeth, to the fast, heavy complex riffs of Dream Theater and Nevermore, Or the epic symphonic compositions of Nightwish and Epica, or the Epic stories from bands like Rhapsody Of Fire and Avantasia, to the incredibly brutal, yet amazingly beautiful riff work of Nile, Arch Enemy, and Necrophagist, ANYTHING you can imagine really.

I love it ways words cannot describe, And in ways most will never understand.

I listen to the music that makes me relax, the most important thing for me is that I could fall asleep while listening to the music. (with very few exceptions, but that's when I'm in a different mood), no matter what music it is. If it somehow makes my mind float away, I get relaxed and I like it. That's basically all I can say, it doesn't really matter what genre it is, allthough I mostly listen to metal, and the only reason for that must be that I know about a lot of metal bands, and there are quite many metal bands can make relaxing music, especially death/black, it makes me so relaxed it's sick, so yeah. I don't really know how to describe it.

Allthough, there is one thing that I love mopre than just being able to relax when I hear music, that is to feel that the music is alive, I can't describe it better. However, there are very few bands that give me that feeling, and it's not really necissary either, but when I feel that I just get amazed, but I guess there are just about 4-5 bands that makes me feel that, so yeah, it's not that important laugh.gif

EDIT: The song Godheads Lament by Opeth is the perfect track in that way, ithe riffs are incredibly alive and it's relaxing as hell. Check it out if you haven't already (but I'm sure most of you already have)

i used to be into rap, didn't listen to anything else. then i started listening to rock, and it gradually progressed to metal. i can't stand rap anymore. i agree with a lot of the stuff uncreator said, metal is so diverse, so many different styles. i love listening to it when im in a normal mood, all those insane riffs and solos, get a kick out of it. but also when im in a strange mood and when im depressed, i always turn to music, it can get me through anything.

Well basicly the music I like listening is ussually music that when I hear it I think to myself "Damn, I wish I would have written that!". Basiclly I mean I mostly enjoy music that I connect to, that it drives certain emotions in me and if I try to play it I will really feel it and get a good sound for it.

yeah i have a friend who's into old school rap and hip hop, he's said before that rappers used to write about good things and not taking drugs etc...
nowadays it'll all yeah im gonna go out, drink loads, get laid, shoot some people, rob a couple of people, buy drugs, shoot some more people etc...

it's not a good influence on the youth of today. (i know im part of the youth of today, but i mean the ones who listen to rap) laugh.gif

and its not hugely musical either.

Im slightly obsessed with Dream Theater.....

.....i say its a healthy obsession tho.

some will get bored of a band and move on to another- try this cd and that cd etc.

I cant get bored of DT- if i feel that maybe the 1000th listen (that week) of a particular album is a bit unhealthy i simply move onto the next album- they're such a diverse band.

I can rock out to the heavier catchier riffs etc
Feel a little creeped out by some of the Darker material
Hear lovely relaxing melodies
Ballads!!!
Superb Song writing
Some really deep lyrical themes
Amazing musicians
Speed man!
John Petrucci!!! < what a role model

Progressive Metal FTW! < well DT to be more precise smile.gif

Well my brother listens to rap, and when I hear the lyrics, that is just terrible. I don't really want to write names of performers, they are quite famous on the todays scene, but those lyrics are really really bad, almost crazy to put in a song! SUch extremes you can find maybe in metal, but those stories, "we went down a club, by some dope, niggas don't show respect, had to kill them all" that's just stupid, excuse me for saying smile.gif

Like you Martin I like many different genres of music. I think everyone goes through "phases" or whatever you want to call it. Be it different genres or just different bands. I can't think of anyone who says I just listen to this genre or just this band. That would be kind of boring in my opinion. There is way to much good music out there to limit yourself.

So how do we determine what we listen too and why? Well I guess life would be the best answer in my opinion. I know this is a pretty broad answer but it's what I think. Whether you find a genre or band that speaks to your experiences or you just find something that makes you happy, everyone has reasons as to why they listen to certain types of music.

I listen to Celtic music because I grew up with it. It reminds me of my grandfather and all the fun times we had together and it just feels like home. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Tragically Hip, Flogging Molly make me feel good and relax me. I listen to Marylin Manson and Rob Zombie just because there is something in the music that I like...maybe it's John 5 smile.gif tongue.gif I usually just stick iTunes on shuffle and let the songs do the talking. Could be Frank Sinatra one minute and Public Enemey the next. I may get more specific depending on my moods but for the most part I'm pretty happy go lucky. I guess in the grand scheme of things I probably listen to rock/hard rock music more now a days but I can attribute that to my intrest in learning guitar.

I listen to progressive by far more than any other genre because I always want to hear something new, and progressive is ever changing. I like to be able to hear a section of a song at 2:46, then come back at 11:46, having heard nothing in between, and not being able to recognize that it is the same song because each second is so different from the one before. And I enjoy instrumental sections much more than just regular guitar solo. Dream Theater and progressive are now like my two favorite things even though for some reason I didn't like them at first, wow I was stupid.

To me, emotion plays a lot, but also the complexity of the music. Im a classically trained player, so when i hear certain Classical orientated tastes in music it really takes me aback. Im very into metal, i always have been, always will be, my favourite sub genres being;

Progressive
Heavy
Power, symphonic or Epic
Viking
Folk
Death/MeloDeath
Black

I also listen to Jazz and Classical music, and early 60-80's Prog/Rock, Beatles, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELO etc

Posted by: at lights end Feb 22 2008, 01:57 PM

i forgot to mention im into jazz as well.
sometimes (like now) i just get in a really jazzy mood and its really relaxing.
