Hi! Welcome aboard! I am very happy that you have decided to join my mentoring program!!!
I have a few questions before we start! It will give me a better idea about what assignments to give you!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?
I am looking forward to start working with you!!!!

My goal is to be able to create and master lead and rhythm
I want to learn More scales and learn the ones I know in more depth
and learn how to apply what I learn
I want to learn Metal/Rock Rhythm Riffs and learn how to write a back track

I dont understand the order to give chords their names or what ones to use and the arrangement to put them in
for the type of music Im trying to create also I dont play any songs all the way through I just know parts

Strong Points, Browse my site at http://draziw.webs.com/ I have created links about me, One shows My Knowledge on
scales, chords and the wheel of fifths, another shows videos of me and videos I like, another is music I have recorded by my self as well
as with friends and the last one I will mention is the sites I learn from, also I know that the 1st 3rd and 5th make up the major Chord

I learn most from Metallica, other bands are Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shadows Fall, All that Remains, Deep Purple, Ozzy, Nirvana,Pink Floyd,
Credence Clear Water, POD, 3 Doors Down and a lot others

I found some arpeggios in the key of E Harmonic Minor and a friend showed me how to get the scale and chords out of it,
and then said we should write a song using this scale

Awesome! How about we will start with an exercise that will develop your technique and timing! It's a very cool exercise that will help you a lot!
Make sure to practice it using a metronome at a very slow tempo!
Here is the tab

You did a very good job! I would like you to add those exercises into your warming up routine!
Also I think you can slow down a little bit and really play every note with a right dynamic and tone!In the mean time I will work on a scale assignment for you!

Looking forward to the scale assignment, is there a lesson I can work on while I wait smile.gif

You did a very good job! I can see a few mistakes! First of all your right hand is very tight up and it looks like you are using your index finger as well? I think loosing up and make movements up and down without using index finger will help a lot!
Also I can suggest to practice it at a slower tempo it's a mechanical exercise and slower you do it better results you will get!
You are on the right track just slow down a bit and make sure you have a full control over your hands!
Let me know if you have any questions!

Posted by: Bascuthach May 28 2012, 05:01 PM

It does look like Im using my index finger, no I have a pick, this was day 2 of playing it, Im sure with more practice I can do better, Ill give it some more time

I saw that you have a pick, but it seems like your index finger is moving as well when you are picking?
This is a very good exercise that will help you a lot! Also we will start working on more melodic stuff next week! For now I would like you to include this exercise into your warm up routine!
Let me kow if you have any questions!

so you say you know a lot about theory, maybe this is what we should start talking about, I still want to do the exercise's, I will give each one a few days and show you what I have and then you can decide if I need to go up or down, I want to read the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=33779 and I'm sure I will have lots of questions, what your idea on this?

I think it's a wonderful idea!!! I can start explaining you theory right away! And book will help you as well!

A few questions before we will start!
1) Build F major triad
2) Build a D major scale
3) A - B - C - D - E - F# - G What mode is that?
4) How many sharps in E major scale?
Don't worry if you can't answer on some I am just trying to figure out where to start!

1.
2. D E F# G A B C# D
3. G major scale, looked at the wheel of fifths to see witch one had only one sharp and then the A tells me its the second mode making it Dorian, had to use the scale generator to double check that one
4. one shape, the notes are E F# G# A B C# D# E, there are 7 modes and I believe 12 octaves on the fret board, I have 24 frets

I like questions like this, so how did I do?

there are 4 sharps in the E Major scale wink.gif

Good job! You got everything right!
I would like to start with a circle of fifths! I know you are probably know it, but I would like to refresh it so we won't have any troubles in the future! I will also explain you numbers, it will make it easier for you to transpose to any key and you will get a better idea of notes relations!
Here it is!

This is how you will add sharps and flats to your scales! It call circle of fifths because it goes up in fifths!
We are adding sharps (#) C - G - D - A - E - B - F#
Going down forth adding flats:F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb
Here are all the sharps:
F# - C# - G# - D# -A#

Here are all the flats:
Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb - Cb

So if for example we have a D major scale we will have 2 sharps F# and C# Every time a new scale comes up we will be adding one sharp or flat!

Now let me explain the numbers! It's very simple

Each note of the scale will have a number it will make it easier to memorize all the scales/chords and will be able to transpose it to any key!
As an example I will use C major scale

C - I
D - II
E - III
F - IV
G - V
A - VI
B - VII

Let me know when you will go through it so I can give you a melodic assignment based on the circle of fifth!

Posted by: Bas Cuthach Jun 2 2012, 01:49 AM

here is a video I found, Is been a while since I watched it

the wheel of fifths

1 2 3 4 5
C D E F G A B C
______ 1 2 3 4 5
______ G A B C D E F# G
_____________ 1 2 3 4 5
_____________ D E F# G A B C# D

and so on

the note on the inner part of the circle of fifths is the relative minor

a saying to help me remember part of the wheel is "Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battles"

the modes are - Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian Locrain

What I play

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

and

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

the major scale is built - tone - tone - semi tone - tone - tone - tone - semi tone

Here is my take On the G Major Scale and Dorian Mode

I tell you all this to give an idea of what I know, to better help you understand what I know, if you know what I know then you can help me learn what I dont know and correct me when Im wrong and help me understand why, this is most of what i know about theory

Posted by: Alex Feather Jun 2 2012, 07:43 PM

Wow! Thank you for making it clear for me! You know a lot and it's very good I will keep explaining you new things as we go along!! I think we can start getting into improvisation a little bit more! I think blues would be a good start!
Here is cool blues track in E
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/blues-mentoring
Over B7
B minor blues pentatonic in this position
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

In a few days we will start a new mentoring approach it will be like a collab but just you and me!
For now I would like you to come up with a first 8 solo bars using backing track and scales I have provided!
Please mix your solo in the track and leave the rest without cutting it so we can start adding parts back and forth!
Let me know if you have any questions or need help!

To tab it would be very difficult because I am jamming and will have to transcribe the whole solo! I am using the same scales and the idea of this type of mentoring to guide you and help you to find your own style of playing!!
You are doing very well and this exercises will help you a lot and you will get progress very very fast!

So I did some research and a lot of classical music is using Harmonic minor would you be interested getting into it and try to start using it in your compositions?

The Chord progression sounds good smile.gif

Ok So let's start with this!

Here is an example of descending fifths

So basically the chord roots move up a 4th then down a third, the sequence being created by repeating that pattern two or three more times

The circle-of-fifths is probably the strongest and most common harmonic sequence. It consists of root movement by descending fifths and cycles through every diatonic chord in a given key. Below is the chord progression in C major and A minor:

This is a good start! Please let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything! smile.gif

It sounded very good! Nice additions of classical music! Very well done! I think you can develop it a little bit more towards the middle and than drop it back to the beginning melody!
I like the whole idea a lot also would be cool if you can upload the backing track so I can give you some suggestions about the arrangement!

Posted by: Bas Cuthach Nov 28 2012, 01:06 AM

To develop it more I need to take a better look at what Im using and what Im doing, the backing is a simple progression, lets look at the scale shapes Im using and make better use of them, the shapes are

G Major Ionian
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

G Major Dorian
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

E Minor - Note: I can not provide a good look at the shape due to its location and given positions on the scale generator so for now I will build it in the A Minor location, here it is
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

where to go from here, how to build from this?

Posted by: Bas Cuthach Nov 28 2012, 11:25 PM

I would Like to add one more that I have been learning

B - Phrigan

The second scale called A dorian not G major Dorian
Dorian is a minor mode
So where you go from here you starting to combine all this positions together all modes are part of the same scale the only difference is starting note but Flats and Sharps will be the same!
Try to do this first lets take
A dorian and B phrygian and combine them
here is an example
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
As you can see I combined them together
You can use those notes in any order! Let me know if it make sense
I will also record an example for you in a little bit I am having technical difficulties with my card but it should be fixed in a few days

Posted by: Bas Cuthach Nov 30 2012, 06:44 AM

I did notice that I had wrote A Dorian Wrong after I added the last scale, I took a look at the scale you made and modified it a little and came up with this

Yep this is a correct A Dorian scale but for some reason you have 4 notes on a fifth string? It is common but might be harder to use especially if you are trying to develop speed picking

Is there suppose to be 2 F# notes 1 right after another?

No it should be like that:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

When you are creating a scale you need to play each note one after another
You will get:
A- B - C - D - E - F# - G
