GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Guthrie's Picking Advice

Posted by: Ben Higgins Feb 23 2012, 12:35 PM

I'm sure many of you have seen this already but for those who haven't, there's some really cool advice here. Guthrie always delivers everything in a normal, down to earth way! smile.gif

My only criticism is the fact that when he's blazing really fast they focus the camera on his fretting hand..... errr, thanks dry.gif

Most definitely! Guthrie delivers... swift and precise guitar death! biggrin.gif thanks for sharing Ben!!

It's just awesome to hear such knowledge in a summarized way. Very cool sounding smile.gif

I just looked over his 3rd module (series of this video, couldn't find the 2nd) and wow he talks about tapping and I got to see/hear new tapping techniques for the first time. This guy is amazing. I watch his video again and again just to get inspired and these video just increased my respect to this guy. How much knowledge does he have?

I read somewhere interesting opinion of a young guitarist who watched a GG demonstration of some Suhr model:

"This isn't fair. Guthrie makes everything sound perfect. How am I supposed to know if the guitar is good or not?" biggrin.gif

It's true! Make a mistake sometime man biggrin.gif !!

Hi got a question.
When i play for example three notes per string from the low e to the high e, i always use alternate picking.
But when I play from high string to low string, I start with an upstroke and use economy picking. ist just makes me more fluent. I automatically do it.

Is there anything wrong in not using alternate picking when playing up the strings?

No there's nothing wrong with it if it helps you to express the licks that you want smile.gif

A lot of people use economy picking to go one way and alternate picking the other way. 2 examples of people who use economy to ascend from lower strings to higher are our very own Todd Simpson and... some guy called Yngwie... wink.gif

Whichever way you to choose to play something it's always good to analyse it and know exactly what it is that you're doing. That way you know that you're doing something out of a conscious choice, not just by accident, and then you can focus on strengthening and improving that aspect of your playing.

Sometimes these things happen by accident.. accidents are good if they lead to an understanding. If they stay as accidental aspects of your playing then they might just remain a hindrance, if that makes sense ?

When I went from classical guitar to electrical I started learning the pick. I think I used alternate picking all the time very slow. When I developed speed at some point I started using economy picking without knowing it actually was economy picking.
It works out very well for me though

I have a very conservative theatcher who says i should play both alternte and economy up but hey, I just cant do it. Or well I can but I am so more fluent with economy picking while playing up so why use alternate instead?

Oh that's great! I love Guthrie, his playing always inspires me.
When I listen to a really great guitarist and get inspired I pick up my guitar straight away.
I also get the illusion that my playing will sound any like theirs. One day maybe... One day... wink.gif
