practicing is playing, but playing isnt always practicing. thats what iv been told for so long. but lately iv only been playing. i sit down for my hour or 2 i put aside for practicing and i always end up just messiing around and soloing. i need some help setting up a "guide line" that i can practice to. but im not sure what i should be practicing. one major important question i have is, how do you practice scales? i go up and down and up and down with tempo. then i try to work in an exersize i kno into the scale. but iv notices i cant solo in anything but pentatonic and blues scales. i can play the scales kinda fast but i dont no how to use them. lately iv been studying how to play rock/metal rythem because its somthing i like to do. im not one for playing the flashly licks and being the LEAD guitar player. i like sitting back and playing cool metal rythems.

im thinking of this
5-review
10-exersizes
15-scales
15-chord progressions/rythem playing
15-improv.

then every other day or every two days ill take a video lesson. i dont want to bog myself down with info.

any imput or recomendations on to what i should be practicing will really help.

HI there ! biggrin.gif

Well you could do it that way, but you know that you can actually practice all of those things that you have listed just by doing GMC exercises!! Every GMC exercise is played within a scale box and so you are infact already learning how to use scales, but your also learning technique, timeing, licks and a little bit of theory too.

And of course you are also praticing in a structured way because you working to acheive a set goal and you will have an end result - hopefully being able to play as the instructior does.

Heres an idea, why not pick 2 or 3 lessons on the techniques/subjects you want to study. You could pick a riffing lesson and an alternate picking lesson that would suit your level - there are many beginners lessons to choose from. Take note of the scale diagrams provided, read the lesson descrition which often provides some theory and then practice with your metronome.

This is the way I have been studying for well over a year now and it really works well for me smile.gif Let me know what you think about this idea !

This way you are also in control of your progress and you can bustom build your practice routine the way you want!! =)

regards,
Matt

i think if you want to practice on scale so you have to choose one kind from scales .for example Major scale so you have to do all the Major scales staring with C Major to B Major and play it serially up/downstrock and do that many times without stopping .then try another kind of scales and do the same .for playing solos i think you have to creat some melody by your self out of the pentatonic and bluse cause these scales are common for solos so you have to try other kinds for example minor harminoc scales or minor neturall /phrygian/mixolydian and other things

Do some riffing, exercises and keep a log of everything you practice all the time with the bpm's and all.
