Posted by: DeepRoots Feb 9 2008, 09:48 PM

Hmm i may post back once i've thought of some more, kinda tired atm..

Competitions:

Super hard theory quiz

Posted by: kaznie_NL Feb 9 2008, 09:49 PM

well, we are in need of wiki articles, so a wiki competition can be done!
This will make sure also people who aren't that good with the guitar yet, can win the prizes. I'd love to win a pocket pod, but for the Lick of the Day competition I just don't have any potention. Then a writing prize could be great. It's just to spread the winners a bit.

another suggestion, a theory lesson (text or video) competition or a motivation speech competition (that's a bit weird but possible wink.gif )

succes, kaz

Well - probably a little marginal as most people don't own instruments they don't pla but what the heck smile.gif

How about a competition for best thread to introduce a band or something? I found so many cool bands on GMC, i think it would work out well smile.gif

Well I understand that would play to your strengths Brett, but how would you make a competition out of that ???

I hunger for your epic answer smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Feb 10 2008, 03:35 AM

It wouldnt actually, seeing as a lot of my threads didnt get answers or responses laugh.gif

But there have been so many awesome bands that ive found out about here (Creep Colony, Textures, Skindred, Rodrigo Y Gabriela). We could have people nominate there favorites, maybe pick a single band they found out about here or something?

It worked well when i was on the Trivium forums, so i thought it would be cool, since this isnt a major thing for GMC, you could make the prize candy or something laugh.gif

EDIT

Wait if i want to play to my strengths, could we have a competition for most threads in "Bands And Artists" forum laugh.gif

And the prize could be....

A JEM... ph34r.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Feb 10 2008, 04:57 PM

We need more prize suggestions!

Please suggest things in the price range up to $250

For our ongoing lick competition we could have two line 6 pocket pods as prizes - but that is the exact same as last time so it doesn't feel quite right... What do you say? laugh.gif

An expensive web cam to aid people in recording their progress. That would be less than 250 dollars. Around 140 dollars for a good one.

Posted by: The Uncreator Feb 10 2008, 05:17 PM

Wah Pedals, Delay Pedals, Reverb Pedals, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser ect.

Any Pedal under $250 smile.gif

Posted by: rokchik Feb 10 2008, 05:53 PM

Just a suggestion but you could offer a "Prize Pack" (or whatever you choose to call it). By this I mean you could bundle all kinds of accesseries togther. IE: Picks, capos, slides, guitar care products, cables....even a metronome or GMC T-Shirt smile.gif

Posted by: superize Feb 10 2008, 05:57 PM

As a price there could be free membership on GMC for maybe 3 months

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Feb 10 2008, 06:21 PM

Ok, got all those, thanks!

Posted by: kaznie_NL Feb 11 2008, 04:33 PM

I think we still need more diffrent types of competitions, to spread the winners as I said earlier. So hmm... an new designer competition, Draw your own guitar, doens't have to be GMC team, but would be cool!

hmm. it's hard to think of none guitar things... But I think it's good to invest some time on that. Just as an example you could get Andrew winning all the guitar playing contests and get's rich due the prices, and Kris wins all the theory prizes (better turn those round laugh.gif ) .

hmmm....highest 16th triplet BMP! that would be great fun, with video.

BTW, those prices are letting the water flow in my mouth.. For a kid, a 150$ Pod is a huge price! Kris, you said the thingie about me and leedbreak should run the place, I'll do it for a Pod laugh.gif No, no joking I actually realy want to do more for the site, but I'll put that in another tread.

Best prizes:
1) Cirse CD (or any other instructors cd..)
2) A lesson of your choice
3) Photo with signature of favourite instructor...

pretty cheap solutions and one day, Pavels photo with signature could be worth a pretty big sum:D

Posted by: Mark. Feb 12 2008, 03:13 PM

A shredneck would also be a cool price ohmy.gif

How about a riff competiton?

We could have one for different styles of music, Blues, rock, metal ect.

Posted by: fire Feb 23 2008, 11:53 AM

riff competition looks good for me but I wouldn't split it:
Instead I'd say "today it's about the best metal riff" next week/month about best blue lick.
But mixed styles would make it hard to compare them i think

cheers

maybe we could have a tab interpretation contest,
where an instructor plays a lick, and we tab it. Whoever's tab is
closest to the real thing will win. unsure.gif

Ahh, yes, very wise! I was wondering how to handle that ... of course that makes it harder for people to follow along with the competition through the entry period sad.gif

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Mar 3 2008, 05:24 PM

You could just keep giving updates on who has posted an entry and maybe how close they got to being correct percentage wise.

But how about MP3 response to the lick?
No tab,just take. wink.gif
I mean if you can tab it,you can probably play it.

I don't agree. I can tab out things way harder than I can play. I have a good ear I'm just not good at playing the stuff biggrin.gif

Well i must admit im the opposite- i can figure out licks and tab them- but i cannot for the life of me transcribe rhthyms (anything that is different to a whole bar of the same thing- like a while bar of 16th notes or 16th note triplets is fine- but any bluesy licks with funny timing im useless sad.gif )

Posted by: Muris Mar 3 2008, 05:33 PM

Then we can have 2 categories,
only tab and only playing response,
depends of what you like. wink.gif

Posted by: fire Mar 4 2008, 04:52 PM

so power/guitar pro tab or what? In ASCII u won't be able to tab out correct freakin rythms wink.gif
I like the audio-reponse idea more:-P
for prices, I would stay by pre-amps / effectpedals, there are also cheper solutions than POD (Behringer f.e.)

cheers

Posted by: kaznie_NL Mar 10 2008, 03:41 PM

Best explanation on a piece of music, I'll explain.
The GMC senior pick a piece of classic music and post it, then we should describe it. The one who makes the best description of his feelings wins the price!

Posted by: Muris Mar 10 2008, 03:43 PM

Many classical music pieces have been transcribed already,it won't be fair competition imho,
I would stick to original licks. smile.gif

Posted by: Zizi Top Mar 14 2008, 07:27 PM

as for a competition suggestion, you can put a backing track and tell everybody to add a lead guitar on it ( we can also add the key of the track so as even beginner can participate)
then member can vote for each others, leave comments and notes

and for rewards, instead of rewarding only the winner (wich is unfair, cause like this it will always be the same, specially if muris participate in the competition tongue.gif) you pick a name randomly and he wins
We can win the brand bew Pod X3, and pod X3 Live or even the Spider Valve HD 100
smile.gif
you can also create competitions without any rewards, just so we can hear what others do, and have some cyber guitar friends smile.gif

Runner up prize?
A free GMC t-shirt! cool.gif

Posted by: preownedguitar Mar 15 2008, 11:40 PM

Prizes:

PC Sound card interfaces
Good Studio Headphone.
New pickups for your guitar.
Singing and or instrument microphones
Small tube amp.

Posted by: Jakub Luptovec Mar 22 2008, 03:19 PM

What about songwriting competition? People could gang up in teams/or we could use virtual bands that already are and make it a team contest.. we could have several categories like.. most tricky solo, best lyrics, most headbanging riff... etc etc.. I can think it more if you will agree, its a good idea:)

Posted by: Jeffrey Mar 23 2008, 04:09 AM

I really want a new strap or case. maybe also new tubes for your amp if you have a tube amp. 10 free tune-ups for your guitar.

Yes yes yes!!!!

2 catigorys would be fine.

This could end up being a furious competition..

Honestly.. Why don't you do prizes with a set *Spending Limit* guitar related of course..... That way the person will really get something they want instead of something they won and don't use very much.

Somthing like

Winner - $75-100
Runner up- $25-50

That way everyone is happy.. ya'kno?

Hey everyone!

I was thinking maybe a "Best Unaccompanied Solo Competition". You know, just your guitar thats it...i bet it will be very interesting to see what people will come up with. What do you think

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Apr 27 2008, 01:29 PM

You should maybe hold a competition for a best creative idea that will make GMC even more better or something like that. Prize could be like 6 months free subscription or something smile.gif

Posted by: AnyJimmy May 3 2008, 07:00 PM

For 250 Dollars, you could get pretty much a lifetime of picks biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gus May 5 2008, 12:31 AM

Lesson suggestion: Crazyest sounding solo (effects competition).
Let's see who is the best follower of Tom Morello... blink.gif

Prize suggestion: a 250 dollars Mandolin.
I always wanted to play this stuff...

How about a metal riffing competition?

Posted by: Vic_Black May 13 2008, 05:46 PM

yeah..that would be really great!

CANNON D FOR ALL

Shorter takes maybe, but sounds like fun. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 18 2008, 02:56 PM

We could have a competition which relates to the practice agendas in some way.

Perhaps just a competition that will reward the most popular practice agenda (there are bunch of ways we could measure that!)

By the way - the wiki competition is turning out to be a great one I think! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Sam Hook May 26 2008, 07:41 PM

The metal riffing competition sounds like a great idea, I'd definitely be up for it. Maybe an instructor could provide a few drum tracks and we have to base the riffing around them.

Yeah something like that. It could be fun and increase the forum participation I hope. Somebody already suggested the idea, don't exactly remember who, but the topic is somewhere around smile.gif

Why not just best compisition..

Or best rendition of some particular lesson.

I've seen many people doing their take on the "Larry Carlton style backing track" from www.bluesjamtracks.com on the world of YouTube, it would be cool to hear diffrent takes and solos on that one and make to make it in to a competition or something.
Just watch these links, you'll get the hang of what i mean. smile.gif

Marco Sfoglis take: http://youtube.com/watch?v=f27P6_DB1vw&feature=related
Guthrie Govans take: http://youtube.com/watch?v=bUZK9dasP8s&feature=related

for those who don't want to pay for the backingtrack we can arrange the backingtrack ourselfs smile.gif i think i can do it.

Pls do not do all these "best solo" or best "guitar player" things. They just lead to the same winners every time. These comepetitions are there to be won by everyone right? Not just advanced players.

Why not? That's just the way it goes, some people are good, some are less good. Quite frankly, I would like to know who the best player of GMC is. There's no way I would win a match like that, but I think it would be very entertaining. People will get really motivated if they're to be entitled best guitar player wink.gif

Haha, what the? Practise then.

We're here to learn, aren't we? not to stick at a low stage.
Best way to learn is challenge and motivation!
