I saw Tropic Thunder on the tv the other night. It wasn't as good as I hoped but it got me thinking today, what are your favourite war movies ?

I always loved Platoon and Apocalypse Now.

Casablanca. I know it seems cliche, but the story and acting is incomparable. Next up is either Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, or Grave of the Fireflies. I also love Apocalypse now and Platoon.

Did you ever see Band of Brothers and/or The Pacific? Both are definitely worth watching!

Let us just say that I watch far too much cinema for my own good. Damn you Netflix!

Cool stuff ! No I've never seen Band of Brothers. I must admit, the WWII conflict is more interesting to me than 'Nam but I can't think of a WWII movie that does it for me like the 'Nam ones, although I did enjoy Enemy at the Gates.

Man, Tropic Thunder is one of my favs!
I really enjoyed Saving Private Ryan. Gotta admit I'm not a huge fan of war movies, though.

I'm a big fan of some classic Hollywood films as well, including Casablanca. It's a great film and I somehow almost forgot that it's a "war" film but yeah, it's set during WWII. Good call!

Does lord of the Rings count as a war movie? Some big battle scenes and such. But it's hard to beat Apocolypse now. Such a classic! I actually have Flight Of The Valkyries as my ringtone smile.gif

I caught Band of Brothers on DVD and I gotta say it was just brilliant. One of the best movies/tv/whatev that I've ever seen bar none. Just amazing work and well made. Well worth a watch smile.gif

Enemy at the gates was quite good as well. Really dug it.

IMHO... Casablanca = Best movie of all time. All of Bogies movies are epic. Amazes me that after all this time and all the technology advances in movie making his movies are still far and away my favorite.

Cheers!

Gary

I agree! My first exposure to Bogie was in high school. I read 'The Maltese Falcon' and saw the film shortly thereafter. I then started to watch a lot of Noir films and that led me down the path to Silent films. I am a huge silent film nerd. Especially all the German Expressionist inspired films. Maybe that is why the music I write for myself and keep to myself tends to be so Macabre. laugh.gif

Saving Private Ryan...

It is really hard to watch as I have relatives that lived that movie...some died, some wish they had instead of having to remember.

Any movies that are accurate from the perspective of the soldier and not a political statement...

Yeah I was wondering about the LOTR movies, since technically there was a war going on during those three films. They would be on my list for sure! I have another movie that is probably really more of a drama, but if I had to pick a favorite movie in which war plays a big part, I would vote for Master and commander. smile.gif And since Band of Brothers has been mentioned even though it is technically a T.V. series, I would also say I really liked the Horatio Hornblower series that aired on British T.V. and is now out on DVD in the States. Long live the Royal Navy!
