This is the 7 notes of the C major scale.
The diagrams are created through finding those 7 notes all over the neck.

It may seem as confusing rocketscience, but it's really not!
I strongly advice you to learn the 7 patterns, as you will be able to jam to almost anything after.

Also, chord knowledge and modal playing will be grasped alot easier!

Edit:
And while learning the lesson, make SURE you acknowledge the chords that are played with each intervals, as it will help you understand modes also.

You say in your lesson "1 – unison", I assume this is the same as a root note? I'm a little rusty on my vocabulary when it comes to music .
