I think it's a good album but there is 1, maybe 2 thrash songs... and those are pretty tame

Nice review smile.gif I've listened through it today and i thought it was really good.
The solos sound a bit uninspired and repetative though. Sounds like he's just focusing on speed.

But other than that i'm quite impressed smile.gif

The first song I heard of the album was "That Was Just Your Life" ( probably because its the first song on the album laugh.gif ), I think the title suited the song perfectly. What a waste of these 7minutes laugh.gif laugh.gif
Some songs have some nice parts though but other then that I think it's a rather average and boring album, imo:P

It's better than St Anger but still doesn't blow me away like the first 4 records. Best since the Black Album though.

I think it gets better for every listen. Now i love it!

But there's 2 things i dont like about it:
1. The production! I've never heard a CD with this much clipping and compression! I thought at first it was just the online mp3's that sounded like this. But the actual CD is the same. Some seem to like it, but i miss the absolute perfect production the Black album had. I would say the black album still today has one of the the best recorded drumsounds ever.

2. As i mentioned earlier, i'm not a fan of the solos. And i'm still not. They still sound uninspired and repetative with a serious overuse of the wah.

I agree with this and I think too many bands are doing this. The guy that did the final mastering of the new album said it was too compressed and had too much clipping but by that stage it was too late for him to do anything. He said he hoped they'd remix the album and remaster to get it sounding better at an earlier stage of production.

Im a big fan of metallica. But it sounded like they used autotune on the vocals, it made them sound pretty dry and too clean in my opinion. Theres a few cool riffs here and there, but sounded ok overall.

I listened only the song "day that never comes" for now and can only review that song. To tell you the truth I didn't like it, sounds like a bunch of grooves stacked on top of each other. Yeah it's trash, but it is far away from Metallica best trash work. It's just lame and weak, no matter how hard and tight they play it:
Hetfield's singing is weak, and riffing is strong, but annoying after a while.
Kirk's solos were biggest disappointment of all: fast, uninspiring and lame.
Ulrich's grooves are the best part of the song, he plays them great, but again, too much groove changing can be annoying to the listener.
the video is terrible, classic american war propaganda, metallica should know better.

i have to go with Ivan here, he pretty much summed it up. i tried to like this album, i really did, but its just not very good, and its not a thrash album either. a big dissapointement. sad.gif

Yeah, the clipping is bad. I don't know how they could miss this. The excuse I read is that the band insisted on recording it so loud that nothing could be done to fix it after. I'm not a studio guy so I only understand very little.

The album is damn good and it does grow on you the more you listen to it, which is says a lot.

As for the solos, It sounds like he was going for attitude more than composing strictly musical sounding solos...almost like the solo itself is more of an effect for the song. In some instances I think it works really well, others not as much. Overall, it works for me with the agressive vibe of most of the tunes....Kirk does love the wah though.
