Finger Workout Device

I don't like mixing lessons together, but I saw one yesterday that I am practicing along with any other lesson I take. It is a Level 1 by Danilo Capezzuto and (if I remember right), it is called "Finger Dexterity." When I tried doing the exercises, I felt like Steve Martin On "The Jerk" when he was trying to clap! laugh.gif I cannot believe how difficult that is for me! Gonna need a LOT of practice on that one!
So anyway, here is my question: I have seen these little devices you can buy. You hold them in the palm of your hand and they have four spring-loaded buttons. They are supposed to improve finger strength and coordination. While not taking the place of a guitar, it would be nice to be able to have something like that. If it works, that is. Does anyone have any experience with these things? Do they work or is it just a gimmick that will be a waste of time (and money)? As always, any feedback on this is greatly appreciated.

I have not had any experience with them. If you get one, make sure you warm up and stretch first, I've heard of people getting RSI or carpaltunnel from not warming up and stretching. When I was a kid, I had to play for a small church group regularly, I had a cheap old acoustic with heavy strings, high string action and had to play alot of songs with alot of barre chords. After awhile I never had to worry about hand strength or sore fingers. Im not saying that will help but its always nice to have a cheap guitar around that you can thrash every now and then!!! laugh.gif Later on I played Message in a bottle by The Police all the time, which helped them stretch across strings.

Have fun.

I've heard a lot of people talk about these things but I've never heard anyone say they actually help guitar playing at all. All they do is train your fingers to get stronger at using that device, but physically it's a completely different motion to the mechanics you use to fret the guitar. First of all, we don't hold our hands on the guitar neck and press our fingers down at the same angle that you would if you were using that device so it trains your hands to do something that you're not even going to do.

I honestly would advise you to not waste any time on it at all.. the world is full of training aids but the best way to get better at doing something is to practice doing that thing. Hands are amazing because they adapt to whatever task we ask of them. smile.gif

I don't have experience with those devices but I have one of this and I find it very useful to practice in places where you can't have your guitar.

I've had a Gripmaster for ages, I wouldn't recommend these devices to be completely honest.

I've never tried them, but I came to have good dexterity on the guitar only using the guitar neck as practice tool, ultimately that's what you need, maybe that shred neck could helpful for travel

I have a gripmaster and for me it's useless.

I also have a shredneck, and that's better to keep calluses when on vacation or do some scale work, but it's a bit bigger. Not bad, but it' not a guitar anyway...

It kind of seems like a gimmick. I just take my guitar with me wherever I go.
