This is a good way of looking at the matter smile.gif Honestly speaking, I never tried to overlook things just because I felt I was not good enough at them, but at a certain point in life, you have to face the idea in which you need to be effective and time is a great enemy. If, until then, as Gabe stated, you took care of covering enough ground, you can take just 4-5 arrows with you and get the job done without having the sword, lance and axe with you, if you get my idea tongue.gif

Nice thread. I always wanted to find out where my strengths are, not as just a guitarist or musician, but as a person as a whole. smile.gif

Yeah, this is a great way of putting it. smile.gif

It's not a case of completely ignoring the fact you have weaknesses but it's more like owning up to yourself what you're really good at and capitalising on it to reach your true potential smile.gif

Ben, can I ask you what your weak spots are? In general not only as a player smile.gif if I can ask, of course.

My right elbow laugh.gif

My feet..

Oh, you mean in my character ? tongue.gif

Well, if I share a public weakness it's only fair if we all do one too. wink.gif I'll start it off, though..

For me, a weakness is not being able to say when I'm unhappy about something for fear of upsetting another person. I guess you could call it people pleasing. I've been working on it a long time and I'm getting better but it's an ongoing thing smile.gif

Like Japanese people smile.gif I heard about this dude who came visiting a friend of mine in Poland and he NEVER EVER complained about anything, until my friend insisted that he told him what he didn't like to do while being there. He finally admitted what he disliked smile.gif

I for one have very little to no empathy towards people who are not doing their best to evolve and become the best they can. I despise lazy people and act very out front when dealing with them in real life... Some people also regard me as an arrogant person - I've been accused of that a lot of times - but hey, I get to choose who I like to talk with and who I am being friends with. If I am not being that friendly with someone I am not being arrogant.

smile.gif hope I didn't scare anyone laugh.gif

Oh man, I am so with you on that one. People just don't want to look at themselves do they ? So, in turn, their lack of responsibility gets shifted onto the shoulders of those around them. Life is hard. We've all got our crosses to bear.. we shouldn't bear other people's crosses too because they can't be bothered. dry.gif

Yah for me my weakness has always been my ear. And although I think it is very important to develop your strengths , you cant just give up on something and be like oh that's my weak area so i'm not even going to try. For me personally I know I am going to be working on my ear for a long time and it is going to be hard but I am not going to give up on it . At the same time I am going to keep working on my strong areas because I want to be a good all around guitarist .

You're right it is hard, an uncovered and lacking part of many a guitarists skills including mine. When ear training there are all kinds of undiscovered nooks and crannies I find in my skill which I am lacking that I wouldn't have known otherwise.

I just bought a Techaffect USB footswitch and have it set to my left mouse click which I hover over the play / pause button on media player (there might be something out there specifically built for this but it was cheap and good enough for me). Without the pedal singing then repeating on guitar with backing tracks that use more than one chord doesn't work because once I have imagined / sang the phrase, by the time I play it back on my guitar, often the backing track has moved on. The pedal allows me to pause the track and play my phrase then carry on, obviously it doesn't sound great stopping and starting but I think it's the only way to do this particular kind of ear training with chord changes. Otherwise one chord vamps are usefull for this.

I start from the bottom and work my way up i.e. I, IV, V chord sequence I sing the roots of the chords only first time round, next time round it's the roots and 5ths, then roots and 3rds, roots 3rds and 5ths, b7ths. I could be a better Blues player or any other style than I am by now, but there are only 12 intervals and 12 notes in all music and I am going for long terms goals in less time rather than short terms goes in less time making the long terms ones longer.

I started with identifying the 12 intervals, most of the time you should use the guitar and play your answers so you connect muscle memory to your inner ear.
