What guitarist's styles are you blending into your style...
I have a couple of them at the moment..
Gilmore - for his feeling and phrasing
hammett - for his fast pentatonic runs
Van Halen - for all his pinch harmonic and harmonic playing
not much into sweeps and tapping yet,
Id be happy just blending these two styles into mine
Rob Barret-I love his riffs, so off kilter and heavy.
Doug Cerrito-His playing is so technical and precise, it blows my mind.
Jon Levasseur-He does things with the guitar I cant even comprehend, Just amazing at lead and rhythm.
Thats about it for right now.
i dont really have a style yet since im learning alot about guitar but guitarists that influence me the most would be:
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez- i like the unique style of his playing and as a composer i think he is brilliant
David Gilmour- his use of phrasing and emotion have always facinated me
Jimi Hendrix- i think everyone was influenced by him
Thomas Erak- i like his style as well he very intense and melodic at the same time.
I have to Add Pat O'Brian, He is one of the best lead players ever, the way all his solos fit the songs is amazing.
I try to mold my playing style from a lot of diffrent players; I want my rythms to be ultra tight and my solos singing but also shreddy...
Rythm players:
Rob Flynn: Unconventional style
Will Adler/Marc Morton: Tightness
Dimebag Darrel: For obvious reasons
James Hetfield: Downstroking and chromatic riffs
Scott Ian: Precision while moving arround
Max Cavalera: Unconventional, simple but effective riffs
John Schaffer: Right hand precision and control
...and just about any Thrash Metal guitarist
Lead players:
Michael Amott: Perfect balance between feeling and shred
Syu: Sense for melodies
Zakk Wylde: Pentatonic shred
Gus G: Perfect phrasing
Jeff Loomis: Sweeps and scale use
Slash/ Gary Moore/ Michael Schenker: Feel
I'm trying to get some kind of mix of Hendrix, Mikael Ã…kerfeldt, Buckethead (his soft stuff), Jeff Beck, Paul Gilbert and my guitar teacher.
Edit: I forgot Robin Trower, Robert Fripp and Steve Howe.
Most important of those influences I listed are probably Hendrix, Ã…kerfeldt, Fripp and Howe,
Great thread!
I've been influenced by Satriani for a long time for his legato.
But recently I'm trying to get more into Fusion type phrasing.
My life changed after hearing Guthrie Govan... :-/
I also agree it's a great thread. When I pick fast it's definitely Paul Gilbert. My phrasing is similar to Vinnie Moore. For bluesy feel I am thinking of Robben Ford, SRV and Gary Moore. There are some others that are worth mentioning, like Eric Clapton and David Gilmore.
Satch, Vai....for their legato tapping and tremolo use. In the last 6 months or so it has been Muris and Emir.....I'm a long ways from using their influence though. Damn AP!!!!!!!
Erm.. my style? I am afraid I don't have anything like that to eat!
Gary moore - bluesyness
John mayer - dynamics/melody
Govan - im not there ATM
Frederik - Feeeel
-Frederik
My biggest influence in my playing is Lian Gerbino..... He rocks
Syu Katada
Claudio Sanchez/Travis Stever
Adrian Smith/Dave Murray
Oli Herbert
Satch (Of Course!)
the influences in my playing is:
Andy timmons - for his nice tone and awesome chromatic runs
Guthrie govan - for his creativity with cool tappings and effects and stuff
Marco Sfogli - for the tone and awesome creativity in his playing
Jack Thammarat - on his way to write songs (full of emotions and perfect harmonies)
My main guitar influences? hmm...
Nergal and Seth from Behemoth: Fast riffs and their solo sound
Johan Ericson and Daniel Arvidsson from Draconian: Melodic/Sad sounding leads, clean/acoustic guitar, and heavy riffs
Mikael Akerfeldt: once again riffs are heavily influenced by his playing
Emppu Vuorinen: Tone and the awesome way the guitar follows along with the orchestral parts of nightwish songs
im sure theres a few more i havent listed
Slash,
Ace Frehley,
Joe Satriani
Gary Moore for his awesome ferocious picking style and phrasing, SRV for his pentatonic blues riffs and shuffle rythyms and Ivan Milenkovic's masterful legato runs!
If i could master these i couldnt care less about tapping, sweeps or anything else!!!
I want to, and strive to play like
Kirk Hammet early Metallica approach of leads and solo`s
Zakk Wylde pentatonic in your face like style
Dimebag Darrel tight playing
Slash for his great soul and feel in playing
James Hetfield really envy his downpicking
And ofcourse I dream of inventing riffs as suberb as mr Iommi
And I want to play the acoustic like Stanley Samuelsen (a Faroese folk musician)
My main influences are JimmyPage, Clapton, Peter Green, BB king
So a combination of all these please ... lol
I think I've been most influenced by Satriani.
But also a bit by Buckethead and Guthrie Govan.
my favorite players are slash, for his tone and feeling, eric johnson, for his clean picking, great cleaner tone and general awesomeness, and more recently paul gilbert, for his speed and also keeping it musical while playing fast.
Paul Gilbert - Just got his new PGM 401 guitar. A dream come true for me. Love it by the way!
Watch this link all the way to the end and you will get to see him Gently Unleash The FURY!

Some other influences i have is
Alexei Lahio
Stefan Elmgren
Jani Limmatainen
i am trying to learn as much as i can from fusion artists like greg howe, guthrie govan and alex hutchings.
i also love muris's phrasing (especially his really cool trills as in final dance) and john petrucci kind of rythm and lead playing.
All of those players are WAY better than i am though . I feel that trying to learn from what they play makes me a better player.
Gilmour - Control of tone, bends, vibrato, feel
Marco Sfogli - Creativity in composition, legato, harmonics
Guthrie Govan - melody making, creativity, "colorful" patterns
John Petrucci - tone, AP, effects
Buckethead - composition, versatility
Brian May - harmony, melody making
Joe Satriani - Playfulness, legato, showmanship
GMC Instructors - versatility, they inspire me to never give up
My biggest influence is Jason Becker in every single way.
Gilbert - attitude towards music, AP, String Skipping, Feeling
Satriani - feeling, melodies, legato
Guthrie Govan - General playing (the guy is crazy every aspect of guitar playing is present and mastered on him. Its nuts)
Greg Howe - Vibrato crazyness, outside playing (very balanced)
Petrucci - I like is phrasing on the slower solos when he uses pentatonic and stuff like that (some people don't...)
Jason Becker - attitude towards music
Steve Vai - showmanship
Eric Jonhson, Andy Timmons - Tone and Control over the guitar
Gilmour - Feeling and perfect bends.
i said this once before:
If Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden got drunk one night, and had a baby with John Petrucci, you would have me
I'm in a learning phase at the moment, but the guitarists that influence - that is in the way that I want to play like them - are probably :
Dave Murray for his insane legato-based solos
Marcus Lavendell because of his extremely passionate vibrato
Eric Johnson because of his beautiful Major phrasing
Slash for his feeling and slow bends
Mark Knopfler who plays insane solos with no distortion !
... And all the other instructors at GMC, who provide excellent lessons, although I'm not practising everything at the same time ! The instructors I've benefited from so far are :
Marcus Lavendell
Hisham Al-Sanea
Muris Varajic (awesome Guitar Idol performance ! )
Gabriel Leopardi
David Wallimann
Dejan Farkas
Jose Lassaga
Marcus Siepen (Hammer-On Dude ! )
Piotr Kaczor
I guess my comment is a bit deviating when you compare it to the topic
