Hey! I'm new here! Registred 1 hour ago so x)

Anyway I was wondering if someone would take a look at my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/ThrashRiffs09?feature=mhee
and give me response tongue.gif There are a few mistakes I am aware of though ... the recording itself is pretty bad, as I use my amp Line 6 Spider Jam and record things directly on the amp ans transfer it over to the computer tongue.gif

Now as I look back I think I failed to play in the styles of the bands I was aiming for :/ First of all maybe because of lack of creativity. I only know the blues scale, pentatonic scale, power chords and the basic chords like A,C,D,G and so on.

If you wait there is a new vid coming up of my attempt in playing in the style of Arch Enemy x)

Off topic: Can you have private video chats with instructors? Also anyone have any tips for recording? Because in my opinion it sucks! xD

Anyway thanks! biggrin.gif

Sounds pretty cool. The tone is not my favorite, but that's just preference. About chats, if you and the instructor has Skype you might could set up a time.

hey mate! I just took a little stroll through your channel and I think that you did very good when you thought of leaning towards the creative part! My name is Cosmin, I'm an instructor here at GMC and you can ask me anything you wish to know.

We usually have video chat sessions which you can attend to (mine is usually each Thursday from 8 PM London time) I am mostly directed towards creation and composition using elements which are common and interesting for any guitarist: riffs, melodies, chords, arpeggios, articulation etc.

If you want to attend, we'll be there on Thursday and looking forward to seeing you. Start exploring the site and look for lessons which could spark you imagination regarding the use of the pentatonic scale for instance - try Ivan's Pentatonic Workshop! It's very good! I also have modern metal lessons which you can check out wink.gif

Let me know if I can assist you in any way

Cosmin

Welcome to GMC! smile.gif I'm Todd and I'm also an instructor here @ GMC. I do Video Chat Lessons Each Saturday at 10PM GMT and we tend to focus on speed/precision/soloing, etc. I'd say try to attend as many Video Chats as you can and lean on the live interaction and see how far you can push your playing! Also, there are TONS of great recorded lessons just ready and waiting. Guitar paradise smile.gif

I dig your youtube channel BTW. Some great riffing there. Sounds like you have spend quite a bit of time working up your riffing/chunking etc. My youtube channel is www.youtube.com/toddsquadxyz I love youtube. Great way to get quick feedback. Then again GMC is pretty good for that too smile.gif

I'll be straight up and honest with you, I kinda agree with your opinion (a few mistakes but no problems) - it's a great start.

Your 'Thrash Metal Original Riffs' is sweet playing, I really enjoyed that, you show some good timing and skills. The 'Gothenburg Melodeath Riffs 1+2' however sound just a little bit slapped together but you still have some really good pieces, you just need to link it smoother together. Work on those jumps and transitions.

If your keen on Speed/Thrash Metal, there's two ways most bands tend to follow:
1) Lean more towards punk rock, displaying raw aggression without melody (pure thrash).
2) Bend that sound with a more straight-ahead heavy metal (modern metal thrash). << recommended

You add a mix of:
Odd syncopations
Tempo changes
Shifting time signutures
Ear twisting dissonances
Double time drum beat
Heavy distortion

Take the listener on a wild ride normally with a volient theme.

The hard part is keeping a chucky bass rhythm, which you seem to be already doing quite well, just clean it up a bit and add some quick, snappy licks in between to keep it interesting. Add some padding with the fretboard hand fingers to drive a cleaner sense of timing into chaos.

The book "Troy Stetina - Speed and Thrash Metal Guitar Method" might help you alot on your path and I'm sure there's a lot of info on GMC to aid you. The instructors here are also really helpful! All the best, thrash on!

"Death/ Melodic Death Metal Riffs or unfinished song" is really coming together nicely!

Thanks guys! tongue.gif I never thought anyone would like it ... even I are thinking "what WAS I thinking" xD And yeah I am going to attend every online chat if I'm not away tongue.gif I really hoped I could get private lessons trough skype, but it doesn't matter! tongue.gif I'll check lessons here and so on! tongue.gif

I am listening to bands like Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity and many more and hope to create music in the styles of these bands without sounding too much like them!

But hey! I don't know where to start ... I only know the blues scale and the pentatonic scale and power chords and basic chords like A,C,D,G. I also notice overuse of power chords especially in thrash metal, and much in melodic death metal also although in melodic death metal there are melodic fills and such things to make it interesting tongue.gif I wonder if you have any tips, other than power chords in rythm sections what can I use? I am not good at lead yet, but I hope it will come with time! tongue.gif

Thanks again! smile.gif

Liking the riffs, zezima. I'd learn some songs by the bands you listed. When you know their formulas, you can then begin to twist them and make them your own.

Hey Zezima, great to have you here at GMC and thanks for coming to the video chat last night cool.gif

It's really cool that you're interested in writing your own metal riffs. Allowing your self to be influenced by your fave bands is a must.. you then need to take what they've given you and make it your own.

In terms of thinking of new ways to play riffs, try some of Lale's lessons. They are super tight and may give you some extra ideas to inject some cutting thrash riffs

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/

Lian has tons of metal lessons, different levels of difficulty and different genres - they might spark some new creative ideas for you to explore

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Lian-Gerbino/

Of course, our amazing Cosmin here has some of his own metal based lessons.. he's too polite to post them here himself so I will do it for him. His interest in modern metal styles may also present different apporaches to you

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Cosmin-Lupu/

That's just a few.. there's tons more hidden gems on this site. The search bar is your friend !! cool.gif

I like the Arch Enemy Style Riffing. It's cool that you are doing this videos! A little comment about mixing.. the snare is a bit loud and the guitar a bit soft... consider it for future mixes.
