Hello all,

I just joined GMC last week, and this is my first post on the forums.

I have been playing guitar on and off for about 11 years. My main guitar is a Dean Evo. I also have a Dean ML Shadow, for when I need the whammy bar.

My favorite bands are Pantera, Lamb of God, and In Flames.

My guitar skills are somewhere around intermediate. I would really like to improve my lead guitar skills. I was drawn to this site, because this is the first site that I saw Pantera solo lessons that looked and sounded correct.

I am a little confused about which direction I should go when it comes to lessons. I know that my sweep picking is horrible and I have not memorized any scales. I would say I am a good rhythm guitar player and I dont typically have trouble with playing through most songs, until I get to the lead or solo.

What direction do you think I should take?

Hi and welcome to GMC smile.gif

To answer your question I would ask you where does your heart lie ? What do you want to really do, not what you think you should be doing but what you really want to be doing ?

So, for example, if you think you should be learning scales but you really want to be learning sweeping, then I say go for it and learn some sweeping. Guitar playing should be fun and enjoyable for you, before anything else.. keeping the enjoyment factor is the key to staying motivated.

Maybe pick 2 or 3 areas of lead guitar that you want to improve at and maybe dedicate sections of your practice time to each area. Or you can spend 3 days in a row on one area, the next 3 on one etc. I vary my personal practice approach to however I'm feeling at the time.

Hi! Welcome to GMC!
I would suggest you to learn as many styles as you can it will give you more options when you are improvising! Also you should try to master scales so when you are playing you don't think about scales and can concentrate on melodies
GMC is a great website that you can find a lot of different lessons that will fit your needs and if you have any questions you can just ask! Community is very nice here as well!!!

Thank you guys for responding so fast. I think scales are probably the best direction for me right now. I have never been good with improv. Any recomendations on scale lessons and or improv lessons?

Welcome smile.gif

I'm no expert like our instructors, but if it's scales you wish to learn I suggest you start with pentatonic and aeolian. They can both be used for minor/major keys with the same shapes, and appear in 90% (or more) of the songs, specially in rock/metal/blues etc.

Hey mate, welcome to GMC! smile.gif You'll find everything you need here. As for where to start, well just start browsing the lessons. smile.gif That's the most fun way - listen to many lessons and you'll surely find something near your level and interesting enough to start practicing right now. If you are well aware of your weaknesses ad you know you'll need those aspects of guitar playing then you should start working on them. Good luck! smile.gif

Hey Taylor! smile.gif Welcome aboard! smile.gif

If you didn't do scale practice, perhaps you can do it systematically with this lesson?

We are here to help you, and there are pentatonic and other scale courses/lessons. Let us know what you need. For starters, it would be good to learn pentatonic scale, and them move to diatonic (the one showed in the lesson).

Hey Taylor! Welcome to GMC! The guys are right! Once you get to play what you like, the 'work' part of practicing will disappear biggrin.gif

Now, if you'd like, check out the bottom of the homepage where the video chat schedule is smile.gif each of my fellow instructors and myself are hosting sessions almost daily and you can ask us anything you'd like to know live! Be it scales or scheduling your practice routine based on your preferences, both musical and technical

Mine is happening each Thursday at 8 PM London time (except next week, when it's going to be on Saturday at 6 PM London time)

Otherwise, I'm also running a licks workshop - the 'thing' if you wanna learn a quick new lick each week - featuring all sorts of styles and levels of difficulty! Check it out: Cosmin's Licks Workshop

Cheerios and don't shy away from asking anything!
