hi!

sometimes life has its own ways....
I attended a regional band contest with my two bands and we did not do too bad so we could qualify for the next round two times in a row.
Last weekend was the north final of the country and guess what - one of my bands made it to the national final, which takes place at a big opern air festival (cool festival)!
sounds great so far ... the problem is, they changed the date to the first of may and this is exactly the week when I will be on holiday with my wife and my children.....

why do the best things in life always happen at the same (wrong) time???
I think I will go for the holiday....
what would you do?

uff congrats about the competition but sorry about the bad luck with the date! sad.gif

What would I do? It depends on the possibility of changing your holydays plans. I would do all the possible to do both things since playing on a big festival isn't something that happens every day.

Is it possible to change your holiday's date?

unfortunately no..
everything is booked and it is the only week when the kids do not have to go to school and we both can sneak away from work.....

do you think that a divorce is a fair price for a festival gig? wink.gif

Im guessing the holiday destination is too far away to include a day or 2 at the festival?

well you would first have to take your income figure out how much of that she will get, forever(cause if she never gets remarried , you'll still pay)How much of that will go for child support,How much of that will be spent trying to buy your kids affection back after you ruin their home. How much therapy for the a fore mentioned children will cost. How much it will cost drinking your sorrows away. How much loosing your income after spending the night in jail because of a DUI will cost. How much your therapy and AA meeting will cost
Man ,It's a close call, could go either way in my book.

You know what they say. As soon as you make plans ,Life happens

I'll tell you how I think if I put myself in your place smile.gif

If he/she loves me and he/she knows my passion for guitar must understand this situation. It's something important for me, so I need a support. Actually, he/she must beg me to accept to play at the festival laugh.gif
Of course when you will tell her about this situation put the discussion in the way that she must believe that is her choice to give up to the vacation (much better for unexpected "over the years" discussions biggrin.gif ) wink.gif
Good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed for you smile.gif

I wonder what you truly wish? ohmy.gif

Well that's a tough thing...

It's hard to tell a woman that You can't go on a holiday after she has to handle Your regular touring, soundcheck, being out for recording or practicing at home. In situation like this I usually choose different from time to time (I mean sometimes I pass the gig and sometimes I pass the private plans we had together hoping she will forgive me)

Unfortunately there will never be a good solution for this and "You knew who You live with when You decide to be with that person" is no excuse.

When I really feel I need to go there and play I always try to explain my girl that it's not only about me and if I pass, there is at least 3 other persons who loose because of it...and they too have their girls/wifes. Band is not one man. Always someone has some personal issues and have to make compromise...

I would probably try to talk to wife and kids to tell them hoe important this is but not in the tone of "I'm going and I don't care". She might see this and You could be surprised when after few days she'll come on her own and say " I know It's important for You...go there...we'll figure out something".

You can consider getting out for a day then...For example...drive them to the holiday place and take a "day off". Then come back and have a peaceful rest of holidays

That's how I see this

Thanks for comments!!!

What I truly wish..... well. I guess spending a few days with my wife and my kids...
I work (often more then) fulltime, had to travel a lot and had 8 gigs in the last three months so I think I need some quality time with my family...

If I were 20 years younger I would have killed for that gig..

sneaking out for one day is rather impossible cause I would need two days (travel + soundcheck, playing, ...) - so this seems to be no option..

The wise teacher (aka the TV) has always taught us to do both at the same time, take your holiday to your work location, have a wacky crazy time doing it, almost get divorced for it... then learn a life lesson... never, ever use a RV for your holiday trip!!!

hi!

just wanted to let you know that I made a decision and cancelled the gig....
my bandmates were very helpful and there are no bad thoughts and I am happy that I finally came to a decision.....

never know if it is the right one but better to decide then to go on torturing yourself ...

I don't know the specifics of this competition, so I cannot comment on that.

But in my experience, All these battle of the band try competitions are kind of bogus. Ya win some lame guitar, a little bit of cash, some studio time (which is not really enough to fully track what you want, so you are stuck using the cash to buy more studio time) etc.

I wouldn't say you're missing much. Probably would have been fun though. smile.gif
