Hi Pete! Welcome to our thread for Gab's Army. Here I will guide you during this new journey that you've decided to start: Jazz Guitar. We will focus this first part of work on these two programs. The first one includes musical lesson while the second one is more based on the theory behind the style. While we explore these stuff, I will also suggest you some other GMC Jazz lessons as well as share Jazz Standards to apply what you are learning on your own improvisations.

Jazz Guitar Basics
Jazz Notes

So what about starting with chords?

In order to be able to play jazz comping and also to understand jazz standards charts, you need to have a good knowledge in chords and its inversions. Start working on this lesson and also read and learn the concepts explained on the jazz guitar basics thread refereed to chords. (You can skip scales and arpeggios by now and just work the different chords covered: m7, maj7, 7th, -7b5).

This workout will take some time, but I would like to receive an update of your progress and if it's possible a video from you in 7 days. Ok?

I will try my best to make it at 7 days but as described before, my time is limited. Is it the first lesson in the jazz notes you want me to look at? And the Chord chapters of Jazz guitar basics?

That's exactly what I mean! If you have limited time, this will take at least 15 days to feel familiar with many of those shapes. Use the Jazz basics chord progressions to apply the shapes learnt.

Take the time you need for this task but please keep me updated of the progress. Ok?

Hi Gab. I just wanted to throw i quick update. I've been looking at the chord lesson and learned the first set of chords from the A to the B string. I've also looked into some of the theory the lesson recommended just to get a feel of the words and terms used in English (I've until now only learned music theory in Danish) It is moving a bit slowly forward because of work, my german course and things like that, but i practice the chords so i won't forget them, and i look into the lessons when i have enough time on my hands. The next half week or so won't leave much space as i am recording with my Punk band.

I will keep you updated when i start progressing som more.

Hi Pete, thanks for the update. Even when you are VERY busy try to dedicate 15/20 minutes every day to play the chords to keep them in mind and become more familiar with them. Once you've learnt the 4 types (maj7th, min7th, 7th and -7b5) you can search for some jazz standard progressions and play along with them.

Good luck with the recording! Keep on the good job.

Hi Gab, I'm done with learning the chords but still need to get some of the theory done even though i know the basics af 7th and maj 7th chords. I've been looking for some good Jazz Standards but unfortunately most i've found also involves 6th chords and even higher. Do you have any recommendations?
