Hey guys,
After listening to the importance of warming up, I was just wondering what is an adequate time (in minutes :-) that you warm up for? Assuming I do warm up excercies, how long do you think I should spend warming up until I am ready to record / perform? (I am a beginner :-) Thanks again for any input , you guys rule! |

I usually go about 0-10 minutes with warm-ups just to get my fingers moving and to get my APing in synch with my fingers.

I am practicing ~1 hour/day.
Warming up 15-25 minutes Scale - 30 minutes Riffs and arpegios - the rest of time. I am taking longer on warming up and scale because I am practicing very slow with metronome trying to be as clean as possible. Hope I am not loosing time! -------------------- |

I would also say 10-15 minutes minimum, depending on the circumstances I warm up longer though (cold open air shows for example)

5-10min, just involves me playing some easier patterns quite slowly. A few scales, maybe an easy little piece and towards the end of the warm up have a few more stretches.

Since I don't have much time nowadays, I usually end up warming up for 10 minutes, put down the guitar, come back later, warm up for 10 minutes, put down the guitar, do some stuff, come back and do a warmup again..
-------------------- QUOTE ("Steve Vai") Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman. |

During a "normal" practice session I'd say about 15-20 minutes. But I don't practice properly very regularly.

When i was younger i didnt really warmup at all. (bad i know)
As i get older i find myself warming up alot longer periods, 15 to 20 minutes or more. Not really because i need that long but because i know that my body doesnt recover as fast as it did 20 years ago. Guitar playing is very important to me and i don't want to end up with some repetitive motion disorder or some other related hand injury that would debilitate me. I would suggest 10 minutes at the bare minimum, of course it also depends on what warm-up routine you are using too. Also now, i do cool down as well after playing, i play a few of my warm-up excersises, then when i put the guitar down i stretch all my hand, wrist, and forearm tendons to keep them limber and not stiffen up. I have found to be honest that when doing this i have alot less fatigue and i recover any stiffness i might haver quite quickly. I just do some of Marcus' warmup tecniques for about 4-5 minutes before I start playing.... After reading Daniel's post right above me though, I think I should start warming up even more.
For the notice, I don't play live.. If I was playing in front of people, I guess I'd warm up a lot longer. This post has been edited by Canis: Jul 14 2008, 02:54 AM -------------------- GMC is not just a website... It's a lifestyle!

I play a few scales at slow speed and gradually increase in speed until I feel warmed up. I never spend more than 5 minutes doing it though.

Sometime I do like muris, I will ply through a song very slowly, which warms both my hands up with multiple techniques. Usually 10 minutes does it for me.
