GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ New Styles Wanted!

Posted by: Deadline Oct 23 2008, 09:26 PM

Yo!

As a new member, It might be to early for me to "complain" about stuff here. And you're right - I won't. wink.gif

Thing is - I love this place, and as I learn something new every day, you won't get rid of me that easy. Joke aside I have some requests. I'm mostly into punk/hardcore/surf/garage, and would love to see more lessons in those styles of music.

Can you do that?

I'll try to do some offspring style lesson, if you are interested in that. smile.gif

How about some Buzzcocks style?

Somebody requested in my personal board punk lessons so I'm working on it. wink.gif

That will be cool - As I think punk style has evolved more into the alternative rock scene than, say Heavy Metal or Speed Metal, and there are zillions of lessons on those already here. The cool thing about punk is technique wise it is somewhat less techinical than other genres(but fast).

Deadline - I am more into alternative rock which includes the not so hardcore punk stuff and believe it or not, what has been helping me a lot lately is working on 16th note Funk Strumming techniques(Ivan has some good lessons on it), even though I have no desire to play funk. Funk uses clean guitar settings and isolating the higher strings to get that signature sound, but if you take the same fast strumming technique with muting strums and apply it to your barre chords, and add some distortion, you will find it will really help your playing of punk/alternative rock,

well, I think we have a lot of instructors who could covers these styles perfectly. wink.gif
Gabe (Gabriel Leopardi) has a huge knowlegde of several styles. so we´ll see a great lesson from him in early future.
Ivan has a huge music knowlegde as well. so both instructor will make a great work about your requests.

Punk - from Ramones via Zero Boys and Bad Religion to more modern stuff certainly has its place here, and it's nice that other people than me appreciate that. Thanks for the replies you gave me folks, and teachers keep up the good work!

And I certainly got some good input as well.

Yeah its interesting how the Ramons had such basic techinique and skill, yet they have been cited as a major influence for many bands over the years because they broke the mold.

Just goes to show that complexity aside, having a memorable song hook that listeners can easily remember, is a good formula for a song.

I still remember playing "Blitzkrieg Bop" at a high school assembly about 20 years ago - I was a drummer back then

What about a Fugazi style lesson or Minuteman (perhaps a in the style of Mike Watt bass lesson by Bogdan) or even Sex Pistols. Yes we definitely need some punk here.

Even some seasoned guitarists would struggle banging out the 16 note _downstrokes_ that Johnny Ramone did. 2000 + gigs, faster than anything and tighter than tightest.

Amazing guitarist imho.

Dick Dale is the man. Would love some lessons by him! There's a cool version of his song Pipeline on YT. Him and Stevie Ray Vaughan together. A tad eighties perhaps (check out Dick's hairdo in the vid), but quality!

Have you heard the new song Hammerhead? It's like the old stuff. I really like Offspring's the new stuff too (minus some songs on Americana).

EDIT:
I JUST realized I'm old!! LOL Americana was like 10 years ago......

The reason we don't have much Punk lessons is probably because it's boring to play for advanced players.
Maybe they'll make you a lesson or two though, it's a quick job, due to 99% powerchords.

I don't know if I could do some punk lessons... It would be nice if you guys write 5 favorite songs for in style request. That way I could check out harmony melody rhythm + effects + arrangement and see if I could do something cool with it.

Sometime in the future I do plan to do series on jazz guitarists - how soon , can't tell you right now smile.gif

Read my first post again, and you can see that I'm not requesting lessons containing 99 % power chords.

God Jul!

I would love some more lessons in the style of AFI (from the Sing The Sorrow era), Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine and band in those genres. Think those are the least covered styles here on GMC.
