Hey, I'm looking for a distortion pedal for metal. I play lead guitar, so the sound has to be able to cut through the mix at soloes (the rythm guitarist uses the krank pedal).

So any suggestions? I want a thrashy, sharp tone, but I also want it to have a powerful sound. Maybe something similar to what Children of Bodom uses.

I guess that all depends on what you're using for an amp, what kind of distortion it gives you and your taste. When I play the heavy stuff like COB I use a couple of different pedals depending on what whether I am playing rhythm or lead in any particular set. I use the DOD Death Metal pedal for rhythm and the Boss Heavy Metal pedal (HM-2) for lead work.

Both pedals are older models but sound great both through my marshalls and the pod. They both allow you to cut the mids for that big deep & tight tone while keeping the highs. wink.gif

ah ok, thanks.

The amp I'm using is a Cube 60, but I am actually pretty satisfied with the rectifier emulation on that amp. I just want a pedal because we usually doesn't bring out own amps when we play live. So the amp can be pretty much anything tongue.gif

I have a Boss MT2 Metal Zone. It is a pretty heavy distortion pedal. It has high and low filters so you can dial in piercing highs or crushing lows, pretty versatile for metal playing. Not such a good pedal for blues as it seems to be a very high gain pedal. It's easy to set the pedal to control feedback, you can set it so it is just on the edge of exploding small dogs heads smile.gif

the Digitech DF-7 Distortion Factory is a great pedal, if you want to know how it sounds, listen to Pavels videos/lessons.

If your looking for depth and a true bypass tone then look no further than Metal Muff. I love my metal tones in this little pedal of a masterpiece.

+1 for the muff, the boost on those things cuts right through, more swagger than the df 7 I think.

Yes m8, I`ve got one, its a matter of taste but I personally dont like it, may have to ebayed soon!
it has a scoop switch which gives a great metal sound but gets totally lost in the band, and I dont think theres enough sensitivity on the gain, bass, mid & treb controls, just my opinion anyways smile.gif

I`m just about to change to a pod xt live, but at the moment I`ve been using a Bheringer UM300 stomp box, the only down side to it is that it is all plastic construction, so if your heavy with yer feet then your gunna bust it, but imo for the price (cost me £18 uk stirling) its a cracking pedal, I love it! biggrin.gif

I'd like to add another one to the muff crowd. The top boost is like turning a cloudy sky into a blue sky day. Or, alternatively, like taking a blue sky and making it a monstrous thunderstorm of metal... or am I just going too far with these analogies unsure.gif Either way, I've tried lots of pedals and the muff is really awesome.

I also recommend trying the Metal Muff. Beware though, if you aren't bringing your own amp you may never get consistent sounds that you are satisfied with. More than the pedal I recommend bringing your own amp. biggrin.gif

+1 hardtail, hopefully you'll be able to get a nice clean tone out of the amp to base the pedal off of, but if not you'll want the pedal to be very versatile and the sound very workable. The muff definitely is, and from everything I've heard about the df-7 it is too.

could you describe the metal muff? is it like a deep bass'y distortion, or is it more treeble/hi gain/thrashy? Since I'm the lead guitarist I should not have too much bass in my sound..

smile.gif Have a listen. It is a very full sound I think, you may just be wanting the very treble-y sound similar to Pavel's in which case the DF-7 is for you but I think for fullness of tone the muff is a better pedal.
