Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

130 BPM feels the most relaxed to me. I will publish a video of me playing this on Sunday, that way I can make some progress. I am quite certain I can make it to at least 155 BPM by then.

Also, I have re-written the GP file. It consists of 16th notes and is repeated twice in a 4/4 setting. Below is an example(S denotes 16th notes):

s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s

Well done smile.gif Can't wait to see your vid! Your hardcore training with Death/Black Metal has given you some valuable experience with sort of right hand heavy lick, so I have high expectations!

I managed to get to 180 BPM using my wrist, but I want to build up my thumb/index speed more than anything, since I believe that I have more control that way. I got to 97 BPM with the latter approach.

I will post my take tomorrow. I am surprised I am here, I have been dreadfully sick.

Your health has to come first soldier! Rest up and play laying down if need be! The Bootcamp will be here for ya!

The threshold between finger picking and wrist picking will change as you grow as a player. Post a bit of each and just notate on the vid which techique your using. I'm looking for

*Clean Strikes
*String Traverse
*Good Speed
*Fret changes.

I will work more on String traverse. Sorry for the delay, but I will post my take this Sunday and then get started on Lesson 2.

Here is Lesson 1. In this video, I am just using my fingers at 100 BPM. I will post the video of me using my wrist within the next 30 minutes.

Good speed on that last one and I can tell you get the point of this workout! I noticed that you seem to have more control on the slower video and better palm muting and seem to be choking up on the pick a bit more as well in the slower video and as a result the sound is more tight/focused.

I hate to have you keep running the same course soldier but I need you to combine the precision of the slower video and palm muting and choking up on the pick (all the million little bits we always talk about) and play at the speed of the second video. Then you will fully have my confidence that you could take over when I'm killed in Action and show new recruits the ropes!

And remember, "A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week." (General Patton)

That's the right attitude Soldier!

Posted by: Nihilist1 May 16 2012, 06:41 AM

I slowed it down to 150 BPM. It feels more natural to me than 180 BPM did.

CONGRATULATIONS! , Private you has passed the first test on your journey to be a RAVING NUT of a Shredder! The road is long, but journey is worth taking. Here is your first MISSION BADGE! The first of many I'm sure!

This is well earned Soldier! Wipe the Blood off your hands, and your guitar, and onward!

Todd

Soldier you are on a MISSION! smile.gif Actually several MISSIONS. As you complete one mission/lesson, start on the next! So Do one Lesson/Mission at at time, making a video example for each workout in a given lesson. If there are four examples, then you have to master all four and make videos so it gets CRAZY hard later on. For now, there are mostly one example per lesson. So start on your next!

All of the lessons/Missions are listed at the bottom of this page in the wiki! Get Moving Solider!

Thank you, sir! I have had a busy week dealing with the business end of my band breaking up, so I haven't touched my guitar all that much since I have been dealing with paperwork. I will begin lesson #2 tonight and kick ass this week.

To ensure smoother reaction time on the part of your Drill Instructor (me), be sure to shoot me a PM whenever you complete a mission so that I know to check your THREAD OF DEATH for new Mission!

I put today's mission on YouTube just before I went to tonight's Angel game(I have season tickets, so I go very frequently).

Well played Soldier! Very good on the picking, control, etc. Nice!

KILLER ELITE
-Clean pick strikes
-Good planting of the hand on the mute
-Consistent movement

KILLED IN ACTION
-On the descending bit, your leading with the pinky and inverting the shape by going Pinky then first finger at each position and while this is certainly a valid modification and a darn good way to work the fingers, it's just not what's tabbed which is leading with first finger in each position for the first strike. Not a huge deal, but this is the BOOTCAMP where we train the next wave of SPECIAL FORCES SHREDDERS. Even a small thing can get your squad killed!

One more pass soldier and you WILL LEVEL UP!

My bad, hahaha. I really messed that one up. When I tabbed everything out, I did it with normal scale shapes in mind. I will be sure to fix this issue and post the video soon. Thank you, sir!

I am sorry that this took so long! I have not been feeling well for some time now and I took quite a few days off from playing guitar. I am back and I hope that all will be well for some time. Here is Bootcamp #2: Redux

That is my Schecter Damien 6 FR. It is my go to metal guitar. It was the first Electric I ever purchased. I have had it for about 4.5 years now. I will be getting a new guitar before the year closes out, though.

Surprisingly, it is a great metal guitar, and I am a huge fan of the natural mahogany look. John Haughm from Agalloch uses this guitar consistently up until 'Marrow of the Spirit'.

I am having a lot of trouble with this one. My mind keeps processing the shapes as triplets -- even though I know they are quadruplets.

I can play it flawlessly, but I cannot play and count at the same time -- which is my goal. Any tips?

Thanks Todd,

Brandon

I'd say reduce the speed by quite a bit. Bang your head or stomp your feet to keep time until you find the groove and can do it without thinking. Once you lock in to it, speed will almost happen by itself. Well, by itself with considerable practice smile.gif Your hands may be getting ahead of themselves which is natural. They can move faster than the commands can get to them. So sometimes you have to restrain them.

Thanks! I will keep attempting this lesson until I get it! I stopped trying to play altogether today and just counted it whilst watching the shapes. After that I used my left hand and counted until I was able to get it right multiple times in succession. Then I did the same thing with my right hand. I will keep doing this and then synchronise everything soon.

Thanks for the help.
