I glad you realize that.
However there's another option. Since you want to lay your thumb on the top of the neck (I believe that is what gives you this comfort) then you can try to hold pick with index finger only, you'll still have thumb and middle fingers free and you'll be able to return pick between thumb and index finger much faster,try it.
