How To Hold The Pick

Everyone is slightly different in what works and what doesnt where the pick is concerned. The question you have to ask yourself is "Is the way i am holding the pick holding me back or pushing me forward?" As you progress you need to always analyze how your playing. If you can find ways to improve your speed by adjusting by all means adjust. If you find your progressing the way you want. If it aint broke don't fix it. An example of analysis ...not necessarily about the pick mind you. For years and years i played with my picking hand fingers extended using them as an anchor on the guitar. It was comfortable for me. After awhile i reached a point in my playing speed where i just couldnt break thru no matter how hard i tried. I started to analyze everthing i was doing. Finally i realized that extending my fingers i was actually hampering the ability of my wrist to move freely. I was fighting myself. Until i had that insight i just thought i was either A) Going as fast as i ever would go or, i am fretting the notes wrong. Once i realized where the real problem was i was able to correct it in about a month. At first closing my hand was very uncomfortable but now its just second nature. Mastering the instrument is a lifetime pursuit. Even Steve Vai messes up and needs to practice certain things. Daniel You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. Apr 11 2008, 10:54 AM	Instructor Posts: 1.829 Joined: 16-February 08 From: Italy	I think one thing is important, you need to have an anchor, your fingers...your wrist...the way you hold the pick is not very important, just see to Steve Morse and to Van Halen...two different way to hold the pick, but both useful! The way you hold a pick comes from detailed examination of your pick position while playing. Try to analyze how you hold it in order to improve your picking technique if needed.
