GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Rec Explained

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Sep 12 2011, 11:11 AM

The GMC Recognition Program (REC)
Welcome to our 3 step program towards progress!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how the program works, everyone can do it regardless of skill and the results are always positive :

1. RECORD

- Practice a GMC lesson that you like.
- http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=39377 the backing track.
- Record a video of your playing along the backing track.

2. UPLOAD

- Upload the video of your playing to http://www.youtube.com/.
- Click on the "post your take" button in the GMC lesson, paste the Youtube video link and push the "Submit REC Thread" button (not visible to guests).

3. MAKE PROGRESS

Your REC take will appear in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showforum=152. Instructors will grade your submission and give you valuable feedback on your playing. Recording yourself has proven to be the best way towards progress. Not only that you need to practice hard to record the video, but you will have a clear picture of your progress by watching videos you made in the past. Shooting the video will give you a totally new perspective on your playing and with the help of GMC instructors you will easily identify areas you need to work on to become a great guitar player.

YES - it is that EASY.

Go for it!

NB - You need a GMC account to participate, https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/signup/.

Excellent Bogdan!

And on top of that, all students taking part on our REC program will appear on our http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/REC_Score_Board, where they can click on their names to access a personal REC page with all their videos, grades, titles and links!

Oh, and last but not least, REC students may very well earn tasty http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=40447

JOIN REC NOW! wink.gif

This is so great! Many will benefit from this. There should be an award for the most posted recs, not only for the best students. Because it's good that they are encouraged to show their weak spots too. Just an idea.

Great post Bogdan!! No more excuses guys! biggrin.gif

Hey guys,

I LOVE the fact that GMC is promoting it's REC program so much. To my humble opinion, this is absolutely a SUPERGREAT tool to become a better player!!! I can only speak for myself ofcourse, but as I became member of GMC, I immediately started posting REC takes. I learned so much from the good and the bad comments I received from the instructors. OK, it's true, it's very confrontational and sometimes we think we are doing something very well while it actually ... sucks. But that's the whole idea behind the REC program : open yourself and show yourself to people who know what they're talking about and let them guide you to improvement.
Where else on earth can you find, not only one, but more than 10 professional, very talented, guitarplayers who are there to help you, judge you and inspire you to become better?????
So, ... stop fooling around, get serious and join REC.

I'm nobody, but REC did a lot for me and I just wanted to share that.

Good luck, Nico wink.gif

Man, that was so hard back in the days.... good for new RECs.

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Sep 12 2011, 06:49 PM

Hehe, excellent posting! smile.gif REC program rocks, and yes - it's that easy! smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Sep 12 2011, 08:42 PM

I remember that one time I forgot to set up the grading poll laugh.gif and it took ages to get three scores and get the final results. Now, it seems to be a matter of one or two days. Great improvement, I shall make a return to posting rec takes!

REC has definitely improved and its nice to see a lot of new members joining in! smile.gif

Simple as that ,great improvement ! smile.gif

Hey everyone its the new guy, smile.gif or one of them anyways. This REC programs look very cool , also the collab's, and I would like to get in on some of them but I am ashamed to say I am an ubernoob when it comes to recording using my pc. Can someone point me to a thread if there is one for the easiest way to get going on this? Maybe free recording software recomendations or something. I was reading about Bens collab and how he wanted a track with the backing and one without the backing and I am not sure as to how to go about seperating them if this is needed on the collabs and in the REC program. I know I could probably do it with Guitar Rig but i have latency issues with that prog, I have a line 6 pod I can use for my guitar patches tho.any help is greatly appreciated and thanks.

With POD Farm you can use Reaper to record your audio - or even Audacity. Audacity is simpler, but Reaper is better. You'll want to hook up your interface first, open Reaper or Audacity, and select Digital Audio Interface (yours may say something slightly different) as your recording input. You might see ASIO as well, and that has low latency, and you can use that. I use it in Reaper. It seems to work just fine too. I use my iHome as my P.A. since a guitar amp does not work.

Anybody want to add anything to that?

Hey everybody, I'm wanting to record some RECs very soon. I've been practicing. I just put 9s on my solo guitar. My 10s were killing my fingers. Just a matter of time now and I'll post some. smile.gif

Hi Rich,

Here you can find some information about video recording in general : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showforum=171

I would suggest that you start a new topic here in the practice room where you would list your audio/video gear and exact things you would like to do (REC, Collabs). I'm sure everyone will be glad to help you out make your first recording.

I can use some help too. I just got a Logitech C910 and Vegas HD 11. I can only get camera to come in at 15 bps and it seems like the video recording gets off a little with the music. I have Abelton Live that I use for recording and an M-Audio FireWire Solo for input from guitar. It looks like I can set Vegas to get input from the M-Audio unit ok, but then not sure how to work it with backing track and so forth! Going through tutorials but feel a bit overwhelmed.

Very nice , that link is the jackpot man thanks alot!! Basically I am going to have to round up some things before I can get started, The webcam that I do have is pretty dated for one, anyway sorry if I posted in the wrong place , I saw the other thread today as well on "how to make and record video: First steps" So I will be studying up on that and start a new post in the practice room if I have some new questions that are'nt adressed in these threads or If I run into any problems.

Thanks again , Rich......

We are really looking forward to seeing you in REC.

New(er) to this site (just over a month), and I just found the "REC" program today. Sounds like a really great tool, and I'm excited to send in my first one soon. So far, I've really been honing in on this riff for the last few days (http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/country-picking-advanced/) but I can't get it up to "Muris-Speed" (aka: 155bpm!!) quite yet!!

I'll try and upload my first vid tomorrow, since it's my day off. I'm kind of an audio-video idiot, so I'm hoping I can get it figured out easily enough. In fact, I'm simply hoping to submit a "live" take, as opposed to having to mix and edit the sound and such. I know I can get a good enough mix that way, but obviously it's not "GMC Instructor" quality!! I'll post my results here perhaps.

Thanks GMC!! This site and community is great! I hope to see it expand (although, hopefully not the price!) over the next few years, as I hopefully find more time to get involved here, as opposed to just watching lesson vids as I've been doing thus far.

When it comes to audio/video quality, it is not that important as long as we can hear what you are playing (so we can give feedback on it).
Live take will do just fine!

Posting videos is fun and it really pushes you forward when it comes to practicing. Also a great tool to "see" your progress over time.

Great to have you on the site - see you around the forum! smile.gif

Hey there,

I would like to upload a video within the rec program. But I am not experienced in recording with video. Is there somewhere a description on GMC how to do it?
Let's say I record the take in Logic as I always do and I record it somehow simultaneously with my Camcorder. My main question is, how do I syncronise the audio file with the video file?
Thanks

Hey man,

You can use a video editor program like windows live movie maker or sony vegas etc. You mute the video sound and replace it with the one you recorded via DAW smile.gif If you have questions you can pm me anytime smile.gif

Cheers,
Dogukan.

You are right. Once you have audio and video, you need to synchronize them in the video editing software like (Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, iMovie etc).

You're welcome! smile.gif

To sync them you need to import both audio and video tracks into your video editing software. There you can move around the audio track in order to make it in sync with the video you see in the preview screen.

I'll say "thanks" in advance..... I just got an interface, so I'll be able to FINALLY submit more quality audio and vids. I have been wondering about the same question, but now I have the answer before I've even tried!! Thanks Quadrium/Bogdan!

That's great news Tommy! smile.gif
REC takes don't need to be perfect at all, what is important is that you practice and get feedback on your videos so that you can make quicker progress in your playing. Please let me know if you need any help submitting your first REC take.

Yes, recording video in windows media player should allow you to export it and use it in Sony vegas for final editing.

How to get the sync between video and audio?

1. Record video on camera or using video capture software on the computer of your choice. This recording should also feature camera microphone audio (will come in handy later)
2. While recording video, have at the same time open audio recording software (in this case Cubase) and record your guitar audio.
3. Export audio and video recorded via camera (here you'll have good video and crappy camera mic audio)
4. Export audio mix of guitar and backing track from the Cubase (audio recording software)
5. Import all files (camera video/audio + Cubase audio) into Sony Vegas and add them to timeline tracks
6. To sync video and Cubase audio you have, you'll be using the audio recorded by a camera microphone as that track is already in perfect sync with the video you have. Line up your good quality audio of guitar playing/backing recorded in Cubase with audio track you have from the camera. Use intro count in or some specific moments in tracks where you can clearly see markers in the audio waveform which you can use to line them up. Once successful, both audio from the camera and one from cubase will sound good together (sound as one).
7. Once audio tracks are synced and they match the video, mute the camera low quality audio track in Sony vegas and just leave the video track + quality audio from Cubase on and render the final video.

Please let me know if you need any help or clarification of any of the steps above? smile.gif

p.s. using natural daylight or as much artificial light as possible in the evening is always welcome in order to get a good looking video. Camera needs as much light as you can provide to produce good results.

hello everyone
one of my concerns about my REC vids is when I record my takes I use my phone mounted on a tripod and it's quite
a hassle to get the right angle that I want so usually find my self playing short videos to check if the angle is right then i watch it on my phone
to adjust it to exact position ... i usually do this up to three times till I get the exact camera angle.
any better suggestions to ease the agony ? biggrin.gif
Thanks

Yeah, getting a good angle can be a bit tricky. You could place an object (for example a box) on the chair covering an area where you'll be sitting and playing in to use it as a guideline to set the angle. Set the angle in such a way that there is room around guitar so that when you move around you don't go out of the frame. I do the same thing as you do when I'm shooting a video alone, I have the camera rolling and shoot a test footage, then move the camera and shot another video to check results and all until I get the angle I want. It really is a bit awkward smile.gif

Posted by: Phil66 Jul 20 2015, 06:41 PM

I use a mirror behind my camera. I use the video function on my stills camera and the camera doesn't have a movable screen so I borrow my wife's make up mirror and stand it behind so I can see what is in the screen wink.gif
