GMC Forum _ Lyrics _ The Pianist

Posted by: Stevie·Ray·Vaughn Mar 4 2008, 03:05 AM

The Pianist

(Verse)
These ancient hands
Sludge across the keys
To hear what he hears
You have to see what he sees

And as the notes boom
They rattle and ring
The song kicks in
He starts to sing

(Chorus)
The chorus begins
And hearts start to break
The pace speeds up
His hands start to shake
But he always pulls through
This wonderful song
You realize life’s good
You realize you’re strong

(Verse)
The room becomes his
The world his own
Lost in a melody
He’s all alone

He closes his eyes
And drifts away
His ghostly hands
Just know what to play

(Chorus)
The chorus begins
And hearts start to break
The pace speeds up
His hands start to shake
But he always pulls through
This wonderful song
You realize life’s good
You realize you’re strong

(verse)
And on the day
That he passed away
I opened the coffin
And there he lay

While on one knee
I hummed his caprice
And repeated the words
“Rest in Peace”

So I wrote these lyrics tonight as a tribute to Jeff Healey. He was a truly great man and one of my biggest inspirations in life. I didn't quite know how to put it until I read The Uncreator's new lyrics and was inspired by the first stanza. Hopefully he doesn't mind smile.gif Anyways, here they are, not my best work, but they were completely in the moment as I was still in shock from Jeff's death. RIP sad.gif

I really dig these lyrics man, i love how simply they are composed, yet how vivid the picture is.

Amazing job! smile.gif

Now I had never even heard of the guy, pardon my ignorance, I'm never much concered for famour or semi-famous peoples deaths, it does after all, happen to everyone... Having said that however, I found that the feeling behind these lyrics was really strong and I think these are easily the best lyrics you've posted here. It just knitted together superbly well and was very convincing. smile.gif

Ok. smile.gif

I'll try it in a simple way, acoustic guitar and voice,
that'd fit nicely regarding to "message" and purpose of the lyric.

(verse)

And there he lays

I think I have a nice idea.
Also,are we missing "s" there?
My gramm isn't best, just to check it out.

I added "the" above as well, does it ruin lyric a lot?
It sounds nice here, fits metric. smile.gif

As for adding 'the', I dont see how that makes sense huh.gif You realize you are the strong?

Here's kind a demo version,no real guitars(just acoustic from VG plug-in),
I almost whispered when I was singing,11PM, I had to cause of nasty neighbors biggrin.gif

I'll do vocals in pro studio(silent room, better mic, preamp etc) in next few days,
add some guitars, maybe even a solo part. wink.gif

Nice lyric indeed. smile.gif

Nice arrangement Muris, very gentle and music is following lyrics very nicely.

Posted by: JVM Mar 12 2008, 02:31 AM

Very nice lyrics Stevie! And Muris great job. Though putting 'the' in there seems really out of place to me. It's a great track for jamming/soloing over.

Which "the"?There are many, need some light here. smile.gif

'the strong'. It sounds okay but it doesn't make any grammatical sense. Perhaps you could say something "you are so strong' or something along those lines?

Posted by: Stevie·Ray·Vaughn Mar 12 2008, 03:12 AM

Muris that is amazing! smile.gif You must sing on your next album! I can't believe those are my lyrics haha smile.gif Thanks to everyone for your comments

Muris, is there any way you could make a little room for a solo break in that backing? It's fun to jam to but I don't want to be playing over your vocals tongue.gif Though its kind of good for some call and response type stuff.. sounds kind of like a knopfler tune to me.

Then again it's stevie's song, your call man smile.gif

I cant believe I missed this thread!! wow Muris what an awesome thing you have done for Stevie, fantastic

Great lyrics inspire great things, keep em comin Stevie you guys Rock!!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Muris Mar 21 2008, 02:43 AM

Many thanks guys!! smile.gif

I'll work more on this tune hopefully during weekend and record vocals next week.
Thinking of adding few extra instruments(sounds into arrangement, nothing too attacking,
just to give it more ambient and feel, will see. smile.gif

Posted by: DeepRoots Mar 21 2008, 03:16 PM

I missed this thread too! SRV those are some great lyrics!

Muris- you've made a fantastic tune out of this- i cant wait to see the lesson wink.gif

Posted by: Eat-Sleep-andJam Mar 21 2008, 07:52 PM

Man you guys really nailed this smile.gif Not only is it an outstanding piece of music but it is all out inspiring. However I think the "We are the strong" makes the verse highly awkward and should be removed smile.gif Just a suggestion biggrin.gif Later~

Posted by: Muris Mar 22 2008, 02:15 PM

Thanks guys!! smile.gif

Now I'm more confused about the I added, sounds better with it,rhythmic wise,
but some of you said it's not well correct, gramm wise.
Dunno what to do. unsure.gif

Posted by: Tjchep Mar 22 2008, 05:46 PM

Well I don't think it sounds bad.. I kinda like it but its not grammatically correct.. But look at rappers.. they make tons of money off stuff that makes a lot less sense wink.gif

So you want me to rap here?? huh.gif wink.gif

Posted by: DeepRoots Mar 22 2008, 06:07 PM

maybe:

.you are so strong

..you are real strong

...you're truly strong

....(I'm out tongue.gif)

i'm no lyricist so pardon me if that isn't the desired effect.. just suggestions ofcourse..

"you are the strong" i think that sentence is correct if you think about it this way, "you always thought you where the weak, but then you realize "You are the strong" or am i totally wrong here?

i think for it to sound good like that i think it'd have to be "you are the strong one"

To me, the weak and the strong refers to groups of people.

Posted by: Siggum Mar 22 2008, 06:44 PM

You are probably right, it just doesnt sound wrong in my head, maybe because im using Danish logic in the English langauge tongue.gif

Posted by: Eat-Sleep-andJam Mar 22 2008, 08:57 PM

All Ik is that I love this song to death and everytime I hear " the strong" I feel like punching a baby. It just shouldnt be there, use one of Deep Roots suggestions- now that I think about it "you are strong" sounds a little awkward to. dry.gif

Posted by: Zephyr Mar 23 2008, 01:47 AM

Muris, you truly are an amazing musician! Everything works perfectly together, the lyrics, the melody, the guitar. It almost gives me the winter blues, when it makes me realize how far away from that I am.

Posted by: seagull Mar 24 2008, 11:19 AM

Well, about the "the" thing (laugh.gif) I think it would fit well too if you sing like DeepRoots said "You're truly strong".

I'll try to add the rhythmic pattern: You're truuu-ly strong.

How 'bout that? smile.gif

Posted by: AudunESP Mar 24 2008, 06:43 PM

SRV, not to copy Muris or anything, but may i use your lyrics to create and record some song?
i'm not going to publish it or play it as my own or anything, just for recording and songwriting experience:)

true, but my sugesstions have the same amount of syllables as your phrase- and loosely mean the same thing...but they're no good?

Posted by: Muris Mar 24 2008, 08:00 PM

No,those ideas sound just fine, but THE has a bit more power when you sing it. smile.gif

Hard choice to make cause it's final phrase in chorus, must be something nice and stable.

Posted by: Chris Mar 24 2008, 11:13 PM

About the lyrics....seems good but i kept getting the feeling you were sticking random words in just to rhyme or fill gaps. If you listen to most songs they have peaking vocals and bridges with absoloutly no rhyme scheme in what soever. Cool though.

That's true, but there are different formulas for texts, metric wise.
This one here is basic 4 phases (2+2) where rhyme IS kind a important. smile.gif

I say just sing it however you like smile.gif Metallica used the line "I'm madly in anger with you" and I doubt thats proper English haha laugh.gif It's rock n roll! If it's good, dont change it! smile.gif

Oh, that's right. Becasue of "rappers" who "sing" about money, women, money and jewellery twice their own weight dominates radio, the music channels and the so-called "top-charts"....

If songs like The Pianist would come out to the world instead, with talents like Muris, it would be a happier place to be ^^

How about "you are among the strong"
It stretches the rhythm of that line a bit but might work.

As for me and "you are the strong", I kind of "get it" too. The strong one. The one to look up to.

Lovely song guys. I'm glad to have had a chance to read those lyrics and hear the tune.

How about shortening the "you are" to a "you're"? It shortens it back down to about the right rhythm.
