Do you use a backdrop when recording videos? What color is your backdrop?
I'm using blue backdrop, and it works very nice. The problem is usually about making an even light across it. How do you handle this? -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

I'm just using a solid background color nowadays, I don't feel like I have the skills to do a nice green screen effect yet,

For now it's black, but as soon as I start working with a chrome key, will have to be blue or green!

Getting this or something similar is a very good option, if you can fit within the frame:
Rest of the shot can be cutout with masking in Vegas. This post has been edited by Ivan Milenkovic: Nov 30 2011, 10:12 PM -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Getting this or something similar is a very good option, if you can fit within the frame: Rest of the shot can be cutout with masking in Vegas. These are really good! I have two of them (regular textured backdrops, not chroma key ones) and they are very practical and look good on the video. Cool thing is that they somehow fold into perfect circle and fit a small space for storage -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net

My wife is a professional photographer (30+ years) - I stole one of her back-drops - it's not a solid color - better to have something with a little texture to it, and darker is better IMO, but not black.
Basically, you want to be at least 5 feet away from the back drop so you're not casting a shadow on it. You want a main light at about 45 degrees, and you should box that light - that is, cover the front of the light with a box that has a white fabric that lets the light through - this prevents "hard light". Also helpful is a kick light - a dimmer light that is set up behind you on the floor and is aimed at base of the back drop so it shines the lower half of the back drop a little - this gives depth. I'll post a picture when I get home -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!

I'll post a picture when I get home So I wanted to followup with some pictures of our studio setup. None of the lights are on for these - taken with my iphone 20 minutes ago, but you get the idea. Here is a picture of a soft box (and me in the mirror with my iPhone Here is one of our back drops with a kick light - the kick light is situated behind the subject so it is not seen - it shines on the back drop and is not bright - but gives a soft glow to the back drop to help remove any shadows cast from the flash unit, and it gives depth - pulling the subject away so it doesn't look like a mug shot. This is giant soft-box - it's for portraiture and overkill for shooting videos - but thought i'd share it Here is a back drop I got from the mrs - she has a pile of them that she no longer uses so I took one. I'm in the process of setting up my studio with lighting, but here's what the fabric looks like - guitar for scale And an up close picture of the color / texture of the back drop. anyhoo - just sharing. Just a blue sheet for my backdrop. The room is very small so I can't get enough space between me and the backdrop but I manage the best I can

same for me, a very small room which a lot of the time resembles a chinese laundry! You could approach it as a Kung Fu movie theme !! |

I use a green background for Chroma Key. It's easy to cut it but I sometimes have problems with my jeans... I have to remember to only use black Jeans.
