GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Guitar Rig 4

Posted by: maharzan Oct 1 2009, 06:17 PM

I am not at all fan of digital modeling and have moved to all tube thing..but I just got an update about the Guitar Rig 4 which I use sometimes if I don't want to fiddle with cables. Seems to sound decent..

I know one of our instructors, Muris, uses this extensively so if you are looking for a good sound, easy to set up, you might want to check it out as well.

GR 2 and 3 were ok. I prefer Amplitube but I hope they improved it a lot in this new one. I'll give it a try

i might invest in a new computer recording software soon, but i love the sound of my blackstar and would rather get that sound in my recordings

Posted by: Skalde Oct 1 2009, 07:18 PM

the metal tones sound so weak mellow.gif but for blues/funk/jazz it seems to be fine

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Oct 1 2009, 11:11 PM

Cool I will try it, thanks. I use GR3 for various purposes, the trick is to know how the actual gear sounds in real life, you can then easily make a good preset with it.

Nice !!

I test GR4 since yesterday and i really like it. I don't know how it compares to the previous versions, but i have the impression it uses lesser CPU resources ... is this possible?

depends if ur in HI q mode (high quality)

Yes, HI is active.

I use some sound enhancement plugins and effects in Logic while playing. Amp modulation i kept outside the DAW by using a POD. I have tried different amp modeling plugins to replace the POD, but all together it was too much i guess. With GR4 it seems to work better now.

I use GR4, I love it!
I think they improved the sound even more with this release...
The previous versions sounded good, but so far this version is my favorite.
The effects can be tweaked even more in GR4.

I've tried out the demo and it sounds great smile.gif
I even got some GREAT distortion tones out of this one!!
That's a great improvement, and the control room works wonders too smile.gif

Great to see it works better than GR4, slowly the modeling is taking greater share of the market as far as I can see! smile.gif

They talked a lot about improving the cab modeling and using some new technology, possibly impulses. Can anyone confirm this?

I just bought my upgrade to Komplete 6 including GR4 - should get it in a few days smile.gif

Do you need special hard ware to use GR4 or will it recognise my UX2?

Edit
Just downloaded it and yes it recocnises the UX2.

It should work on any audio card but better ones renders better sound (thats the only difference).

I have been using GR 3 for quite some time and I really liked it. I was just about to order version 4 when I now switched completely wink.gif I just got an Axe-FX Ultra and this is my fave in the moment.

are the GR3 presets compatible with GR4?

Yes, there are. There is an import function for that, so if You got GR3 installed before - the installer asks You about imorting the "old" presets before the proggie starts for the first time.
Btw. check my review in the WIKI.

I need to check this out now. Some students already recommended me GR4. I think is time to try it

If downloaded the GR4 and it seems to be cooler than the previous version, you can notice that on the presets. There are too many good things like the simil sequenciator that allows you to set some effects like the Whammy or the Wah Wah...really awesome.

I cant say anything about GR4 but I have used GR2 and 3 and they were good but when I recently bought my first real amp im never going back to guitar rig. It has alot to offer but to me thats a downside.

I tend to play with the sound rather than play the guitar tongue.gif but that not GR fault tho

Nah, personally I also like "the real thing" better, if one ever had your feet on a stage and got that kick when the pants starts to wave around your ankles (of course You have to wear -70's pants like me thou) along with the first chord, then You know what I'm talking about. It's like trading Your girlfriend for a bad movie from the 80's.

But hey, there are situations where this software is useful, and as i wrote in the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Native_Instruments_Guitar_Rig_4, what goes in comes out. We guitar players seems to be too pickernickety about sound, instead of actually PLAY. The guitar & the amp is nothing but a tool, its like a microphone for a singer. The point is, that if You take a great guitar player (like Muris for example, he uses GR3 for some lessons) and a great guitar - this software will sound tremendous. On the other hand, I've seen really good players play some piece'o'junk and it also sounded fantastic. I guess its just a matter of how You use the tools available, great music is not gear-dependable.

Yeah i bet a great guitarist could make most gear sound good, i just wrote what i thougth about GR but im also not that good with the guitar tongue.gif

I just got that "wow feeling" then i first pluged in the real amp, never got that from Guitar rig smile.gif
Cant say im a tone freak either.

Oh Guitar Rig or any digital modeling amps are really for recording quickie stuff (at least for now). Its quite impossible to record the real amp without spending much or having recording gears. GR3 doesn't sound bad though. Its come a long way since I used some other modeling amps before. REAL thing is always better. You can't beat it.

Its all personal choice. Even not all like one particular tube amp. biggrin.gif

You took the word out of my mouth... smile.gif The most of us doesn't have the equipment to record our gear properly, or dont even have the room to do it at home. And here's a situation where GR4 is very handy. I see it as a compliment to my ordinary setup, when I want to record something quick/or don't have time to spend hours of looking for the right sound for a special situation. It would have cost me a fortune to buy all the stuff GR4 is modelling....

I am a late starter on gears. and I have been through digital modeling and just starting the tube world. I know how much hassle it is. Fortunately, it does have a direct recording option. smile.gif But that again involves, quite a bit of cables and switches to turn on. smile.gif and when you are practicing the same thing 2 hours continuously having a speaker ON is definitely not GOOD on ears and neighbors. smile.gif

I'll see if I can try out this new Guitar Rig 4. Hope it has cool bass amps/cabs modeling.

Thought I'd share a new patch I made called DARTH VADER DUET. Big gain with an octaver to boot. The mp3 doesn't do it justice. Give it a whirl.

 DarthVaderDuet.mp3 ( 1.1MB ) : 69

 Darth_Vader_Duet.zip ( 5.61K ) : 59
