GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour

Posted by: Yash Jul 10 2012, 06:56 PM

Hey guys. As many of you know, Megadeth is my favorite band and I really love the song In My Darkest Hour. Its a great song.

So, since its so epic, I thought, maybe I'll add some strings/keyboard (inspired by Children Of Bodom on this idea), make it a bit more progressive, and add another solo. Here's what I came up with.

 In_My_Darkest_Hour.gp5 ( 190.06K ) : 224

As you'd notice, I added some some extra sections (Drums and Bass, an extra solo), added strings, tweaked drums and bass a lot, replacing hi-hat with ride cymbal in some sections, making the bass do Octave notes with the power chords and some other stuff.

No, to the main point - THE SOLO (staring bar 161)
I wish to incorporate these techniques in the solo
- Sweeps (Not Covered)
- Alternate Picking (I think I did cover it)
- Legato (Covered a bit)
- Tapping (Covered enough I think)
- Bends, Vibratos and some more emotional playing
- Exotic scale runs, combining above mentioned techniques

I think I've got enough space for everything.(Maybe a bit less dry.gif )

Post the additions in a GP-File please. And, I know I can't play this, but this is for just my compositional skills smile.gif Hope you'd appreciate this

And, on a side note, I LOVE my guitar (sarcasticaly, you know wink.gif tongue.gif ) I can shred all this on this one, its awesome tongue.gif

[I wish I could break it right now mad.gif ]

PS - I tried posting it three times, but every time, something happened (font ask)

Yeah it is !!:D OK. If you ever use it, please do check it out, I did a bit of hard work in there smile.gif

Great stuff Yash, just listened to it.
Your two added solos are pretty awesome, clearly shows that you've got the compositional skills. Now sit down with your guitar and practice to play it yourself wink.gif
As Lian (a former instructor here) once told me: "when you can create great music in your head, you can also create it woth your hands. Just practice more until your hands can do what your head wants them too."

I admire your dedication, I would have thrown my computer out of the window if I wanted to do such a thing in Guitar Pro laugh.gif

Keep it up Yash!

Thanks for the words Christian smile.gif I can learn all the riffs of this one on my current guitar, but can't even think of soloing on my current guitar, coz it has a fat and uncomfortable neck, and anything over the 15th fret doesn't ring out sad.gif Once I buy a new guitar with a comfortable neck, I'll surely learn it biggrin.gif

I added just one solo starting Bar 161, the other solo is Mustaine's as it is(starting bar 120) tongue.gif.

Here's a better GP-file, with upgraded sections

 In_My_Darkest_Hour.gp5 ( 190.23K ) : 101

I am still working on getting the solo right. I gotta add sweeps, scale runs etc. Next, I wanna change the mini-solo to something like in this video. that solo is at around 4:20 in the vid. Seems like the b**** really luaghs tongue.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Can anyone please tab it out ??? rolleyes.gif I tried, but I am sure it's on the high E-string only, and starts on the 24 fret maybe.

Thanks
Yash

Edit: I just noticed, lots and lots of typos in the first post of the thread, sorry, laugh.gif

Hey guys, as Gab requested, here's a straight from Guitar Pro MP3. As I listen to it, and it sounds, pretty descent. Just select the tone carefully wink.gif smile.gif

 in_my_darkest_hour.mp3 ( 15.33MB ) : 158

And as a little bonus, here's Fade to Black smile.gif I and my cousin (who started playing drums a little while ago) made the drums, 100000x better. He heard the original drum track and said 'This guy hasn't got creativity and hates rides' Then we did a lot of tweaks in the track while jamming a bit, did some tempo changes and here's what we came up with smile.gif

 fade_to_black.mp3 ( 17.83MB ) : 145

Hope you like it smile.gif We got an ending in the song, which came into my head tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Well done wink.gif I think the problem is you've posted GP5 and MIDI exported to MP3. It's really hard to tell much just from the GP5 file. Since it's a midi file, there isn't anybody actually playing so there isn't much in the way of performance and the sound quality is just whats in guitar pro which isn't great. So it's sorta hard to tell.

Guitar Pro is sorta step 1 in your process. You've got some good ideas and you've mapped them out. Step 2 is to actually play what you have worked up and record it. Then you'll have a performance to share. This may seem impossible at first. The good news is it's not that hard once you get going. You can even play over the original track and cut it up using something like reaper which is free to download.

I'd say grab reaper and cut up the real song and play some bits over top of it with your guitar and record it. Mix that together and post to youtube. That way folks will have something to listen to and be better able to get an idea of what you are trying to do. Sound like a plan?

Thanks Todd. Ir does sound like a plan, but my current guitar won't be able to do it, at least the solos, its got an extremely fat and uncomfortable neck, but I can learn the riffs. Also ,check the post with the MP3, it sounds descent to me. Uses RSE smile.gif And if I use reaper, I won't be able to change the drums and bass... which I worked upon a lot, with the ride, double bass, and octaves on bass guitar sad.gif

Only if I was in a band dry.gif

Right now I am learning all the riffs and learning to sing while playing smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 17 2012, 07:29 AM

I just saying, get reaper and just solo over the original tune for now until you can get to the point where you can create your own tracks. You gotta start somewhere. Once you get reaper, you'll need some drum software at some point, probably EZ drummer, and then either a bass guitar or and octaver/octave plugin to make your guitar sound like a bass (easier just to get a bass and sounds better too)

At that point you can start making complete tracks with bass/drums/guitar. So you can re do cover versions of songs like your doing here. Or you can write your own which is kinda the point after all, eventually you'll write your own music from scratch.

So GP5 is a great place to get your ideas down. IT's a KILLEr practice tool. But it's not really meant to be a recording tool. See what I mean?

Hi Yash! I agree with Todd but I also understand what you mean about your guitar level now... I can hear some string arrangements in the file but I don't really notice where is your solo, the song has lots of solos and I can't find all yours. By the way, it's difficult to analyze a guitar solo played with midi...

My solo is the one that starts just after the main riff with strings ends, starts at around 4:29. And, are you talking about my MP3 file or the GP- 5 file ????

And I think the MP3 files sound pretty descent. smile.gif What do you say ??? Not the GP-5 file, the MP3 File. GP- might sound like MIDI at some computers

Yes I get your point smile.gif Guitar Pro is for practice (And I just discovered how to use speed trainer effectively. smile.gif ) But this is, just a starting point smile.gif

Thanks for the kind words Gab smile.gif Did you here Mustaine in that solo ?? I tried to capture his playing style, don't know if I was successful tongue.gif

But, as I said, it isn't complete yet, you here some space with just a the riff before the next solo, my solo has to be going on till the next solo starts(Jeff Young's solo).

I have to incorporate sweeps and exotic scales, but I don't know any tongue.gif All I can do is take barre chord shapes, move them up the neck and arpeggiate them. What do you say ?

I think we would all rather hear you playing 5 notes than hearing GP5/midi playing 1000 notes if you see what I mean? I'm sure I speak for the other instructors when I say we'd love to hear you actually playing something, not matter how basic. It's very hard for us to critique a midi file because nobody is actually playing it. make sense? I can really appreciate all the work you put in to composing the gp5 file, honestly well done. But even a simple solo that you play with your own hands would be great.

Reading all of the conversation, I must agree with the guys! Try to match the capabilities of your ears and brain with the ones of your hands wink.gif If you will get the acoustic, you can take your ears and harmony knowledge to a great level!

I am also curious to see the videos smile.gif Don't worry if you make mistakes, everybody makes them wink.gif
