GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Bend To Pre-bend?

Posted by: spacebran Mar 4 2012, 05:16 AM

The lick in video 7 of this lesson has a bend to a pre-bend on the string above it.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/jimi-hendrix-style-lesson2/

I don't know why, but I am having a lot of trouble with this. Maybe I'm trying it wrong. The strings above the one I bend kind of scrunch up above my finger and if I try to roll my finger to grab the one above it, the one I am bending gets loose and just sounds terrible. Sometimes I 'grab' both the strings above, too.

Can someone describe how they do this?

Thanks!

Hey SB, I know this technique and I use it a lot. I also try to describe it in part 8 of my lesson here:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Marty-Friedman-Rocks/

When you bend up, the lower strings will always automatically get pushed up too.. the key is keeping them pushed by the string you are fretting and not letting them pop out of place and go over the top of your fingernail !

When you are at the desired pitch, you somehow need to roll the very tip of your finger over so it covers the lower string that you need to pull down as well. A lot of it is also down to the accuracy of your picking hand. Pretend you're bending up on the B string, so you've picked that. Then whilst the bend is held you want to bring the G string down under your fingertip as well, so make sure that you only pick the G string and not catch the other string, which will make the sound messier.

Unfortunately it is one of those techniques which is alost impossible to direct somebody through.. it's just good old fashioned trial and error with this one. At some point everything will just click for you.. the good thing is you're actually aware of this technique and are trying to learn it. A lot of players never learn it at all smile.gif

Thanks Ben! I'll try this out later today. I guess I just have to find that 'sweet' spot.
