GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Stoner Audio Collab
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 16 2013, 03:37 PM
Hi guys! Once again we have a collaboration based on requests. Many of you wanted a lesson inspired by Sabbath so I decided to open a collab based on a genre that was totally influenced by Black Sabbath first albums. I'm talking about Stoner Rock!
This backing track is in A minor and has basically 3 sections. The first one that keeps A5 chord, a second one with a progression based on A5 - G5 - F5 - D5 and then a third part where I keep A5 again. You can use A minor, and also some modes like A Phrygian over the only "A5" sections.
Stoner_90_bpm.mp3 ( 1.43MB )
: 435
Tempo: 90 BPM
Deadline: 4th June
Important info: This is an audio collab so I will be expecting two audio files from you in .wav or mp3 (320 kbits) formats. One file that includes your playing with the backing track and another file that only includes your guitar to let me mix it with the other ones. You can post all the takes at this thread. If you use Soundcloud, please remember to allow downloads.

I'm in.
Exited to get home and do a couple takes. I want to work on modes.
So I'm gonna do some Phrygian solo, this will be my first time using modes other than Ionian and aeolian. So with Phrygian while the Am chord goes for several measures would it be right to solo in fmajor and just call it APhrygian?
Posted by: Gitarrero May 17 2013, 01:38 PM
It's not Jonas Brothers...but I'm in anyways. Maybe it's time to get back to real music for a change
Posted by: bleez May 17 2013, 04:36 PM
Hells yeah, Im totally in
Ive not been able to do a collab for ages but I'll spark a fat doobie and wander into the desert for inspiration

yes! Both scales have the same notes, but it's important to focus on notes from A minor chord when you are playing A Phrygian. Remember to get the characteristic sound from the mode.

hahaha... So you are serious about the Jonas Brothers collab...
I know what will happen... I will receive threats from Germany.

Hi Gabe, I'm running late as usual.
Not sure if I'm quite getting the Stoner vibe or not.
If the take is not up to par, no problemo here if it's not included.

Sorry for not posting a take Gab, my Hard Drive crashed and I've only just received my new one!! Next time I'm in for sure!!!
Posted by: Headbanger Jun 5 2013, 09:10 PM
I apologise for not sending anything yet...but to be honest it wasn't without trying hard for hours...I didn't even get near the standard that I think would be required...But I don't give up easily so if this collab is over I will endeavour to improve for future collabs. I'm a bit annoyed with myself to be honest that I didn't but I must say that its a steep learning curve trying to play a collaboration part.. I envy those guys who seem to do it and do it very well every time with style and originality and taste!

Hello guys! This is the final mix and comments for the Stoner Rock collab! I think that everybody did a very good job with this one and we finally got a very interesting track. Thanks to the guys that joined and also to those that wanted to do it but for any reason or another could submit a take.
Listen the mix here:
Stoner_Rock_Mix.mp3 ( 7.66MB )

Some comments:
Bleez: You showed us that you are one of the masters of this genre here at GMC! Your take is pure stoner, pure desert, groove, simple melodies, pentatonic riffs very influenced by Sabbath. Everythins is great, as well as your tone and the use of wah wah. You rocked this one! Well done.
Gitarrero: Hey mate! It’s cool to know your Stoner side. I think that there are some cool ideas there. I think that there are some parts that could sound cooler if you work a bit more the melodies. I think that you did too much use of long notes and changing that is what would make this solo more attractive. Be careful with those bends! Thanks a lot for your take, if not, the collab could be finished.
Llibach: Wou! Your solo is so dark, so mysterious. The first melodies are so great! The second section is also good but everything makes sense when you finally add those aggressive bends at the end. I can notice 3 moments at your solo and that makes it very interesting. Good job!
Mossroller: Both your solo and your tone are pure Stoner Rock. I can hear Monster Magnet and Kyuss in your playing. Your solo evolves very good and it makes it funny to hear. Great Angus style part at the end! There are some technique issues on that lick at the end but the overall is ok! Thanks for your take.
WeePee: Black Sabbath!! Your solo is SO enjoyable. I love it from the first note to the last one. You could be playing on new Black Sabbath album and that would make the solos of “13” even cooler (and more precise!). Great job!
Mroberts: Hey mate! Mroberts has its own style!! That’s one of the most difficult things to achieve for a musician and I think that you got it! No matter the style that you play, I can start to notice your touch. Keep on that way!!

Bleez, that's one kick ass solo dude, fits the track so well, got my vote for the take of the collab. Must be all that drfiting in the scottish deserts that got you in the mood.

You shouldn't be too hard on yourself man. There ain't a standard that you have to achieve in these collabs it's all about fun and having a go, even steal some of your favourite licks and use them.
Even a crap take will get positive feedback on where to improve and focus your practice.

This collab turned out most awesome, full of really cool riffs and badass doom. Some of the links between the parts were so slick they sounded planned!

Yeah well said !! I remember thinking the same while listening others on collabs. It's just that the more (collabs) you attend - it comes easier. And often a backing track is taken from a lesson so you can go and take licks from there. I have done that many times.
And eventually you'll find your own style !!

Its true what you are saying..but each of my takes had some good bits and bad bits and I kept deleting out of Reaper when there was a bad bit and starting again on a slightly different theme/syncopation...until I ran out of time.
When I listened to everyone's takes before the end of the collab, I can only say that I was a bit gutted not to hear any bad bits
...no way was I going to submit. But I did learn that I need to have more ammo and areas I need to improve on : Like timing...playing solos using things other than just minor pentatonic....This is about the 6th or 7th time I have done this without submitting but the first time I mentioned it. Thanks for the encouragement llibach,WeePee and Gab...I'm not that worried what people think..I'm just picky and like things to sound good.

Ive not done all that many collabs but im quite sure they were all minor pentatonic
you can always work on a collab in your mentoring thread, to help refine the bits that you dont like.
