GMC Forum _ Wiki Writers _ New Project: The Gmc Journal

Posted by: Fran Dec 6 2008, 02:21 PM

Hi all!

I'm happy to announce a brand new Wiki Project: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:GMC!

Yeah, that's it: a GMC newspaper created by all of us, here in our wiki.

Purpose:

The purpose of The GMC Journal is double: first of all it will be a nice way to be informed about the latest happenings in our small GMC universe, and given time it could become a really nice article library to browse in the forecoming years. Imagine how cool it will be, a couple years from now, to look back in time browsing through old piece of news thanks to the powerful Wiki searching/category features. smile.gif

Contents:

Anything, no matter how big or small, important or ludicrous has a place in the Journal. You can write news articles about:

Challenges
Collabs & Video collabs
Site improvements
Virtual Bands achievements
Member finished songs
Uploads
Instructor related news
Competitions/prizes
Pictures
Personal news: you got some new gear? Improved your playing? Learnt something new? Played your first Gig?....

Your imagination sets the limits. The wiki is yours!

How does it work?

Piece of cake. All you have to do is write your article here in the wiki. No fixed rules!. cool.gif

I'll take a look every day and put it under the right wiki category and/or rename the article as needed, etc. It will be nice to keep all Journal articles under the "GMC" category, and title them as "Journal yyyy-mm-dd Article Title", where the "yyyy-mm-dd" is the date. That way it will really easy to browse once we have tons of articles.

Again, you guys don't neet to do anything but write!, just tell your story, and I'll find it & relocate/retitle and do anything needed so it all stays at the right place. Shall you have any doubts, just ask! smile.gif

Some reasons to write articles

Writing a simple piece of news takes no time!, it shows you have a journalist spirit plus it means you are a nice guy. wink.gif

Ok, so that's not enough uh? dry.gif , well, well. It will also lead to you getting qualified as a Wiki:writer, and written articles here also will serve as "monthly completed articles" for the Wiki:ers out there to maintain their badge.
And what's more: as I regularly update the Wiki Front Page, most of these articles will be featured, which means your articles will catch lots of attention!

More surprises might very well await for those interested in the wiki in the future... biggrin.gif

Here's an example article!

So how does it feel? Shall we build a piece of GMC History together?

Funny you should mention it as I was thinking that you'd make the perfect Wiki Art Director!, I'm sending you a PM right now smile.gif

awesome!

Posted by: skennington Dec 6 2008, 05:59 PM

Great NEWS Fran.. laugh.gif I'd hoped for a while that something like this would come about. smile.gif Anyway it could be published once a week in an email to all members?

Posted by: berko Dec 6 2008, 06:07 PM

Great idea to manage this huge amount of stuff that piles up on GMC!

And skennington's idea is great too smile.gif

Posted by: Fran Dec 6 2008, 06:23 PM

Thanks for your support guys, now, start writing cool stuff!! laugh.gif

That's a good idea Skenny, maybe an email with a link to the latest journal update or with links to the most recent news... the thing is that an email can't handle wiki code, as far as I know!, I'll think about it smile.gif

But there are lots of things to do first: writing articles, and reworking a whole section (a portal) of the wiki for this purpose. I guess I'll rework the "GMC portal" section of the wiki and convert it into the "GMC Journal" portal soon.

But first and foremost: some content!

This is awesome biggrin.gif
Time to get started writing ^^

I'm sorry to be so dumb, but I don't see any link or button in the Wiki that says "Create new page" or similar. How do you create a new document?

Do you mean create a new topic in one of the forums, if so, which one?

Posted by: Fran Dec 13 2008, 02:07 PM

No problem Jdriver smile.gif

I though you knew the basics of creating a wiki article and that you were asking about the Journal specifics.

Just type the word or phrase in the search space in the wiki and press Go. If there is no article covering your word or phrase, your search result will let you know that there is no such page, and give you the option to create it. You click on that "create it" link and there you have a blank page for you to write your article.

If I want to create an article called "The MTP is now rolling!" I would type that into the search space, and the wiki will tell me this:

Search results
You searched for The MTP is now rolling
Jump to: navigation, search
There is no page titled "The MTP is now rolling". You can create this page.

And that's all smile.gif

Check this:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Help:Contents

Don't worry about templates yet, just read the part from "How to edit GuitarWiki " till the end, so you learn how to insert a picture etc. There's no template for news articles so you don't need it.

You'll find that it's a lot easier than it seems, and once you write an article and I tell you a couple more tricks it's piece of cake. Once you've made your article in the wiki I'll find it and add it to the GMC Journal main page.

Shall you have any doubts, just ask smile.gif

Brilliant. I did a journalist/media focused three-year course in school and sometimes I really feel like writing again. So it'd be brilliant to do a review or two once in a while.. Great idea anyway!
