Removing A Neck Finish

Apr 7 2010, 09:47 AM	Learning Rock Star Posts: 1.758 Joined: 13-April 08 From: Merseyside, UK	Hey guys, Despite my strat being a wonderful instrument im finding the neck finish a pain in the backside! Most of my other guitars have oiled or extremely thin satin finishes that feel great in the hand but my strat has a nitrocellulose finish, whilst this is a great finish in terms of resonance it really clags up in the hand and totally outs me off playing it, I thought i could wear it in but it still feels like theres a ton of it on there. Ive tried a good guitar polish but the sticky feeling comes back after an hour or so playing. Ive spoken to a local luthier who said he can refinish the entire neck but it will need refretting as the finish is applied under the frets, this seems a little extreme to me so I was just wondering if anyone on here has any other tips for getting a more woody feel to the neck without destorying a fifteen hundred quid guitar cheers! Apr 7 2010, 10:09 AM	Learning Rock Star Posts: 228 Joined: 11-November 09	you want to use a very fine wire wool 0000 grade or even 00000 you want to just kiss it not scrub away like a mad man. although it will leave a different colour on the headstock. what a lot of the guys do is put 4 or 5 layers tru oil on it, very lightly wire wool it then buff. head over to www.reranch.com and go on the discussion board if you want more help, its a really friendly forum and the guys have real skills and are more than happy to help. Personally I'd just take the existing finish right back to wood and oil it or even spend a bit of time and Shellac finish it. You won't 'ruin' the Guitar and if it comes that you want to sell it I'd suggest buying another neck with it's original finish still in place and just swapping them. Apr 7 2010, 05:41 PM	Learning Rock Star Posts: 228 Joined: 11-November 09	Warmoth make some really nice kit, there was a guy who left warmoth and set up his own company. usacustomguitars.com I think. they havent got the range or the fancy tops but they do great strat/tele replacemnt necks and bodies. there are some guys on ebay but I wouldn't trust them... (Although I do recommend their products!!) Well, keep an eye on eBay for original Fender Necks, there are always some Fender 'Licensed' ones available which are of the same, if not better quality than the Fender ones!! Ive got it right down to the tint now so the neck doesnt look any different (Maybe a little duller) but it feels a million times better, restrung with some D'Addario 10's and its like a new guitar, we'll see how it stands up before I go any further, should start to relic up nicely now too!
