Hi All,
Thought I'd introduce myself :-) I am a 39 year old Brit, recently moved to Connecticut USA. I've been playing guitar for probably 30 years now, starting at school on classical, then teaching myself electric later. I have played in a few bands, and done a lot of home recording, but for the last 15 years I have been lazy and kind of plateau-ed out, rehashing the same old scales and licks. About 3 months ago I got myself a Line6 Variax 700, and it totally inspired me to become a better guitarist. First, I bought Kris's Video online - awesome ! But I became scared at how little I really knew about lead guitar. From there I found my way to GMC and immediately joined when I saw Kris was an instructor - hi Kris!
Now the hard work begins - I have to unlearn bad habits, and add to the 2 major and 1 pentatonic scales that have got me this far. On the one hand, I feel like I have to start again from scratch, but on the other hand, I feel inspired that there is still so much out there to learn !
Wish me luck ...
Regards,
Andrew
Hi Steelkonsum !
Yes, I'll see if I can find some guitar solos I'm not too embarrassed about and I'll post them for comment.
Hey Andrew - welcome!
I see you have already contributed with some greats posts Looking forward to hear more from you.
Kris
Thanks Kris - I am loving GMC!
Wow, who was this guy???
Well I thought that since it was just past the 1 year anniversary of my arrival at GMC that I'd take some time and reflect on what I have learned over the last year - please indulge me
When I joined GMC I was looking for a way to take my playing to the next level - I was completely bored with my playing. It was workmanlike, but not technically or emotionally inspiring, at least to me. Heres an example - I posted this a few days after I joined GMC:
The_Work_Song.mp3 ( 1.51MB )
: 173
Ok, no bad notes, I used the right scale, but DULL and LIMITED. When I found Kris though freelicks, his DVDs then made my way to GMC I knew I had found something special. I immediately set about getting better. Now, a year later, I have boosted my playing for sure. I don't recognize the player I was then - I have so many more techniques to use, even though I am just starting out with many of them. In the last year just in terms of guitar playing, I have:
Welcome new guy!
I'll have a listen later... Swedish Eurovision song contest on the TV, I can't be distrurbed right now.
Awesome progress andrew! I think it's about time you started making your own video lessons
Don't forget that in the last year on GMC, you also finally learnt how to spell definitely correctly.
Fantastic post Andrew! Heres to you, my good GMC buddy You have looked after me in times of need, supported me in my thirst for theory knowledge and most of all been a really good friend !!
I hope we will be good friends for many years to come
PS. Does anyone feel like singing a Sting song?
Andrew- i would still be on the Am pentatonic if it weren't for you!
Not only have you showed me lots of awesome theory lessons and have been mighty patient with me on PM but you also inspired me to take theory in to my own hands and absorb as much as i possibly can!
Its thanks to you that im earning a couple of extra £ a month teaching theory to beginners, and starting next week ill be giving my first guitar lesson to somebody twice my age
Life is good- and you got the ball rolling- cheers Andrew!
song was really nice. and I mean really nice. very precise, but not mechanical, had a lot of feeling. I don't hear a lot of uploads so lacking of flaws. and it is just as hard to play slower like that as fast. very hard to hide flaws, guys playing fast have a much easier time doing that.
My flattery this does not mean I want you to go easy on me when I do eventually upload My Grandfather's Clock. However, I intend to make it as perfect as yours here, except more likely to set my dog's hair on fire.
edit: typo
Guess I missed the topic a year ago,
welcome Andrew!!
Excellent post Andrew!
as far as I`m concerned your one cool dude, the support you have provided me with over the last couple of months has been amazing, I`m glad that you are here at GMC things round here just wouldnt be the same without ya!
cheers and all the best
This post is like blast from the past
Welcome Andrew This place surly wouldn't be same without you!
Phew I almost deleted this thread and banned the member - I thought someone was trying to imitate Andrew...!
No seriously this must be one of my all time favorite posts - in the same thread you throw us backwards in history, back to present, and manage to tell us what happened in between and show us your progress...WOW!!
Now as for your progress it is true testimonial of what can happen in a short period of time when putting alot of thought behind the practicing... I am looking forward to hearing the progress in a year - I think many of the more technical playing ingredients which I know you have dived into, will start finding their place in your reperoire this year.
Heck Andrew I think you just created a new phenomenon with this post - everyone should bounce their introduction thread after a year and let us know what has happened!
Andrew your fine presence here has defined our community - and I am also very honoured to be able to call you my friend! Simply put - FRIENDS ROCK!
Thanks Kris, some very kind words there - none of this would have happened without you of course you rock too my friend
yeah, happy GMC Birthday !! hehehe, Andrew, I said it before but I want to say it again: you rules, my friend
Your theory lessons are a must for every GMCer , thanks for sharing your knowledge with us , and i hope we can count with u for many more years.
Wonderful and very inspirational post Andrew.
Happy anniversary .
Cheers,
Tony
An inspiring recap of your year at GMC Andrew , and here's me thinking you've been here for ages!!
I've yet to listen to your 'before' GMC playing to hear the improvement. From what I hear you playing now is excellent and I hope to improve in a similar manner.
I hope the next 12 months are just as rewarding.
Keep up the hard work
Happy anniversary from me too! GMC just wouldn't be the same place without you Andrew!
Wow, doesn't time fly?
Today is my 2 year anniversary of joining GMC!!!
This thread started the day after I joined when I introduced myself, and I revived it when I had been at GMC for a year - I will continue this tradition by reviving it again today
It's been a busy year for me - both at work in my day job, and at GMC. Whilst I haven't made huge leaps with my playing over the last year, I have consolidated a lot of my techniques and am still overall happy with where my playing is going
In GMC terms, a lot has happened - I seem to always be working on some exciting new scheme with Kris and Smells - in the last year we:
Congratz Andrew you rock,
Awesome Andrew, you can bet you are a fully fledged instructor, I love your lessons & theory board, and I hope you stay with us for many, many more years to come
Congratulations, Andrew. You are a big part of GMC. Among others, you made this place a special one. Be as kind as you are!
Andrew, when I came here, more than a year ago, I remember that you were mostly in theory stuff and moderation, but now it is much much more, and you're doing it perfectly.
Amazing work and I am so pleased to have you here
Happy anniversary Andrew .
Amazing progress Andrew in two years, truly inspiring to read and absorb.
I am very thankful to all the advices you shared with me on video quality. That really made me rethink and approach things from different angle. It was a lot of effort from my side but the time you put in to help was just amazing. I value that very much Andrew and thank you for that.
By the way, Welcome to GMC !
Welcome to GMC Andrew
Enjoy Your stay
I've never said welcome, so... Welcome to GMC, Andrew! I bet you'll find something for your taste here
If you're the theory kind of man, we've got a couple of those lying around here somewhere
Hehe, GMC wouldn't have been the same without you! I hope ninjas never come and unplug your computer!
Allthough, even if they did, I guess you'll be making housecalls or using morse to communicate with us
Welcome to GMC Andrew!
GMC wouldn't be what it is without your amazing theory lessons. Keep up the good work!
Andrew!! I have dreamed about you for the last two years, and now it's coming true...but hey, wait!!
No seriously the amount of good stuff you have done at GMC is more than I can grasp - and what's even worse...we have so many coming things planed. I am so happy it isn't just a dream!
