Hi Mirko!
How was your new year's?
Let's get started with January's program!
These are the three assignments for this month:
* First week: Due January 10th
- Post rhythm exercise no.1. We are still gonna drill the 2/4 time signature, this time is going to be a little more demanding. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.
- Post riff assignment. This is the main riff for the song "Mr. Brownstone" by Guns and Roses. It's a great exercise and it's got some interesting mixture of techniques in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVYDnQwi3OQ the riff appears at 3:17 as in the GP file.
- Post speed exercise no.1. Start from a comfortable speed. All alternate picking starting on a down stroke. This is a must-know type of pattern to develop speed. Go up to the fastest and cleanest speed possible and post it.

week_1___Speed_assigment_No.1.gp5 ( 2.06K )

* Second week: Due January 17th
- Post rhythm exercise no.2. For this exercise start at 60bpm. And work your way up. The goal is 160, but post your fastest possible take at the time. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.
- Post solo assignment no.1. We'll keep on working on the bendings. This time let's do the first solo for "November Rain" by Slash. Play the "guitar solo" part on the GP file attached. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-YRJMfgxts The solo part appears at 3:48.
- Post speed exercise no.2. This exercise has some different patterns in it and it's not square. Do it with alternate picking but don't be restricted to it if you need to use a couple of hammer-ons or pull-offs.

week_2___Solo_assignment_no.1.gp5 ( 31.56K )

* Third week: Due January 24th
- Post Rhythm exercise no.3. Make sure to include the accents as we saw on previous 2/4 exercises.
- Post solo assignment no.2. This is a really fun excerpt from "Mr. Browstone" solo. Challenging but I think it will really help on your bending technique.
- Post speed exercise no.3. The idea here is to break the regular up and down patterns and start combining different runs "arbitrarily". A chromatic exercise. Start on a comfortable tempo and work your way up to the fastest and cleanest possible.

* Let me know of the REC lesson you want to submit for this month. The REC take would have to be posted on the 29th on january.
Let me know iif you have any comments and questions!
hey, nice assignments, its fun to practice that stuff! gnr is great every time, i never played that song before, really cool!
im waiting for the day you catch a song that i can play already! *g*
i would like to do the Vintage Rock Solo from Jonathan! i played that a little bit the last days already, it has some cool bends in it and it sounds really awesome! i love that tune! the only problem is the fast run in the end, thats impossible fast for me now, im not sure if i can play that in 3 weeks, maybe i have to create another end for my take a little bit slower stuff, but i really would like to practice that , so maybe im fast enough then!
hey daniel, im thinking about that coment from emir to my last lesson:
"When you vibrate while in the bend you should still vibrate from the wrist. You're moving your whole hand and the result is not really a good vibrato"
i have really problems doing vibrato while bending, and i dont know how to do that. i dont understand emirs coment, when i do vibrato from the wrist i have to moving my whole hand havent i? Maybe you can explain it for me or you can you can show me that in the next videochat!
second thing is the riff-assigment: the second part on the 4. til 7. fret is very fast! i tried to play that with 4 fingers, but then i recognized that it feels more comfortable to play it qwithout the pinky.
now im on 80% speed to the song and it doesnt feel very good anymore because i have to chance the frets very fast! what is the better way there? should i play it with 4 fingers or only 3?
hey, im not sure if we talk about the same riff, because i have no idea to use pull of there, i have made a video to show you what i mean!
hey, im not sure what to do! maybe my english is to bad, i understand two differnt things in your response: i should play it with 3 fingers, but you would bet they had played it with 4...
hm, i should learn more english maybe!
ok, i hope i understand it right that it better to play with 3 fingers!
hey, i have done some videos today, but i dont really like them. i am ill since sunday evening, thats why i havent played that much, im at home tomorrow the whole day and so i think i can do much better videos tomorrow!
woooooooow, i have seen that i had to do the videos a few days ago, i was sure i have to post them today! upppps! im sorry, like i said, tomorrow ill do!
ahhhhhhh, i know where the problem is! i though due is a shortcut for duesday (yeah, now i know that it is called Tuesday)
Vintage Rock Solo from Jonathan:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Vintage_Hard_Rock/
hey, that video sucks, but my head hurts and i cant really concentrate... so, thats be best i can do today. i have to start with the new stuff and i have two videos left, so here it is:
here is mr brownstone, its played with 90% speed. can you hear that pinched harmonic??? im very proud!!!
by the way, i have lower the quality for this small MTP-videos on my camera! if you have trouble to see or hear everything please tell me!
Hm, i have tuned the guitar 4 minutes before i make that video! that was the second take!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe i should buy a new tuner!
how did you lower the speed of the track?
i did it with the windows media player, there is a funktion to to that... pretty easy way to do...
???????? never heared about that... there is a button to press... tomorrow i will do a vieo to show you the new speed assignment, im not sure if im playing it right, then i show you the funktion on my laptop, i think thats much easier then explain it in english!
is it possible, that my tuner tunes wrong? because i really tuned the guitar before the video and after you wrote that i tuned it again and there wasnt much to do, because the guitar was almost in tune and i have played a time after making the video.
or maybe it only sounds out of tune because i bend the strings sometimes a little bit without purpose...
hey, here is the first solo assignment, there is a big mistake in the end, but this is my best take and i havent more time to do one, because i have to practice the new studff and the vintage rock for rec!
the guitar sounds out of tune or not? i tuned the guitar right before the take (ok, this is take nr 10 or something like that), so it is in tune but it dont sounds so. in the slide part it sounds out of tune in my ear! what are you saying? if you think so to, i will post a video in the forum and ask what to do...
its really a dark video, but my light is broken...
hey, i had a look on the new solo assignment i i read there "pre-bend". i dont know what that means? where is the difference to a normal bend?
Pre-bend means that you don't attack the string until it has been bent and then you pull it down. It happens fast at that particular part but don't think about it too much, just listen and emulate it. Notes are there written down so you can see what's going on.
About this week's solo assignment, it's very good! nice control over the bendings! I think you have gotten better during this past months. I like the continuity you achieved at 0:09. Revise the lick at 0:12, do it sliding and not with hammer-ons.
Just practice 0:26 by itself some fews times. I think you went a little too high on that bending.
The guitar sounds in tune this time. You should always do the same for all videos, and actually for every practice session and gig that you have. It's crucial.
what do you think about it?
i wrote much about my feeelings to the video, but i delete it. first i want to hear you, then i will told you what i think!
i would be glad to get comments from anyone else who see that! what can i do better?
(Or am i the only one who read the MTP boards from other guys???)
Hi Mirko,
actually, I read most of the MTP boards. I think I will sign up for one of the next MTPs...
I think you did great, I see great improvements regarding your earlier posted videos.
Is there a chance to record the guitar on your computer and mix it with the backing track (with a software like reaper) ? This would make your sound so much better, because now I personally think the backing is a bit to loud and one can hear much of the pick noise.
Greetings
Gitarrero
Hey Mirko,
i also read your MTP board and i think gitarero is right here. Try to use a DAW like Reaper or Audacity and mix it with the backing and don't use the sound from your cam.
Here is a good video for you: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-lessons/gmc-video-recording-tutorial-273641234/
I learned everything about video recording for GMC there. David Walliman explain its very good.
I like your playing in the video but with better sound it would be even better.
Hope that helps
I think your take is very good actually! the harmonic at 0:43 is amazing!! spot on! Your timing is great! your bendgins have improved a lot since earlier videos,
In general there are very few things to improve, almost none, for instance the second bend on 0:52 went a little too high.
I would suggest that you move on and start working on more challenging material because you have this one down. The more material you learn, the more you will improve.
I think the suggestions about sound quality made by Guitarrero are very valid and they are not hard to implement.
Hi Mirko,
I use this little device ( http://www.behringer.de/EN/Products/UCA222.aspx ). You can plug it into your amp and connect it to your PC via USB. I bought it in a bundle with a v-amp 3 and the energyXT software for 100€, but you can get the UCA222 for about 35€ alone.
It is easy to use, I don't want to miss it anymore!
needless to say, that i havent worked on that very much... i havent the time this week to practice much, sad... i love that solo lick! have to work much on them, sounds great!
i hope to make the rthym stuff on saturday!
thanks for the feedback guys! im glad to get response! yeah, i have to buy some recording stuff! i opened a thread in the gear.forum for that!
hey, i take the "Vintage hard Rock"-video for REC that i posted before... i didnt had the time, to make a better one!
the problem at the moment is, that im close before a very important test for my master school! i wasnt in school all the class- units and thats why i have to learn pretty much because the test is in 2 month and im really bad!
of course i was playing the guitar last week, but not that much i have to do to spped up that licks!
i think next month wont get better and so please dont await big improvments from me!
Hi Mirko!
I think this month has been very productive on your side and you have improved a lot in different techniques specially in bending strings.
I’m very happy with you as a mentoree because you show interest and dedication to your assignments and completed them all.
For next month we’ll keep on working on material that would help you improve your technique, rhythm and ear even further but if you want we can lower the work load since you told me you are going to be more busy in school.
Let me know of any special technique you feel that you need to work on or maybe an style of a particular band/guitarist.
Here’s the link to your January’s REC take:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=33431
all right Mirko,
we'll keep on working on those important topics next month,
I'll give you the assignments soon,
have you thought about the REC lesson?
