GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Gmc (you're Gonna Love It) Video Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 16 2011, 05:03 PM

Hello Guys!! Welcome to my first Video Collab at GMC! biggrin.gif

The idea is to make something big! We will use an original song that I composed some time ago to create a GMC Hit. This will be a VideoCollab/VideoClip so you can record yourself playing, singing backing vocals, acting, head banging or doing some funny things.

Kris will be recording the lead vocals but we need to write some lyrics for the song. Could you please help us with it?
We also need some guitar players that record arrangements, guitar solos, licks, the riffs, some modern noises, whatever you think that could work over this tune. Remember to film youself doing it and to post both the video (mp4 format) and the mp3 file (with and without the backing track).

I’m posting the full mix with Kris idea for the chorus and also another shorter file with some ideas (the lyrics has no sense, it’s just a reference) for the voice melodies of the other sections that I have recorded when I first composed the song.. You can use it to write the lyrics or you can suggest other melodic ideas.

I will edit the structure of the tune if it’s necessary, so feel free to record all the ideas that appear.

The tune is in E minor and the tempo is 145.

Who is in??

biggrin.gif

Full Song:
 GMC_Video_Collab___Full_Song.mp3 ( 4.21MB ) : 913

Vocal Reference (sorry for my lazy vocal performance... it's just a reference! tongue.gif ):
 Video_Collab_Vox_Ref.mp3 ( 1.4MB ) : 735

IMPORTANT: If you are going to record a guitar solo or something with your guitar please also post here a file with the line signal without any distortion, amp simluation or process if it's possible. This will allow us to have a more uniform sound. Thanks!

@ Bogdan & Ivan, since we're in the beginning of this I think you can just pop in where you feel that you can add something!

Gabe has the final word though (perhaps he'll will want both a line and amp bass track to make mixing easier)

Agreed about the lyrics - I have already played around with them (al though I have a sore throat) and the idea will work well!

It would be cool though with input from more people!

Totally tempting - wish I didn't have so much on my plate these days :/

I do a lot of song listening at work, and often while I'm programming, a lyrical idea will pop up - if i happen across a hook or something I think might be interesting, I'll pass it along - at least I can try to contribute in that small way.

Looking forward to seeing the end-result!

Here's a little sketch of what I meant. Not perfectly clear, but you get the idea smile.gif.

If you like it, I can make a better version and also record video (a bit problematic, as I have nothing to record it with at the moment biggrin.gif ). It seems I have to change the strings, these are sounding a little dull.

GMC
We're talking hard...and rocking hard!
You don't know who the hell we are

Day and night, we make it right
And who's to say we've gone too far?

Practice - makes us better
Practice - gives us the strength we need
Practice - you know that we are ready
Practice - That's right baby, 'cause do you know who we are? (We are GMC)

We're flying far away
To the promised land of 'Axe n Shred'
It's time to set the sails

We're loving it, kicking it, playing it and doing it all at...

...GMC!

-------------------

It's still very rough and experimental + I couldn't use the cool sounding backing (but Gabe will fix that easily).

The chorus ("we're flying...") needs more climax and power to work - I am hoping some [guitar?] dubbing will do the trick.

Also during the "Practice" part it would be really cool if we could get vocal takes from as many people as possible (no singing required - just shout "practice" four times, that's it)

Gabe has the final word though, and I will be sending him my files this evening. So let's wait and hear what he says about this ( I am hoping he won't tell me to start all over unsure.gif )

Should this be guitar stuff only? I just got a guitar shaped midi controller and thought I'd throw it in smile.gif But I get that it's a GUITAR promo so maybe not a great idea? Just curious smile.gif

I think I might try something different on guitar, maybe accoustic, classical, mandolin, etc.

P.S. what are you going to put on the dry guitar tones once they are in the mix?

hey! feel free to record whatever you think it will be amazing! I ask for the dry guitar (besides a processed one) to use it in the cases that I think that the sound is poor or need some adjustment to make it fit in the song. This is video collab but you can use your midi controller if you want... I don't think that it could be a problem.

Gotcha smile.gif I'll maybe submit a guitar take with distortion and otherwise dry as well as all the way dry one. That way if it works, as it you can use that but if not the clean one is there too.

The midi controller has been wads of fun smile.gif Playing piano and strings on guitar is pretty fun.

Hey Gab,

I have a really interesting idea smile.gif Besides the guitar video that i am gonna shoot i can play the verse drum parts on a guitar hero drums(not with real drum sound, just a rhythm, after muting the audio it's gonna look like i play the real drums biggrin.gif ) and shoot a video. And since there are no guitars in that section maybe you can put that video as a background while Kris singing. What do you say? smile.gif

Ok guys! I'm writing an update about the status of this collab. I'm now mixing the takes that you already posted here and the result is so amazing! However I think that we need much more takes! It would be great if some of you can record some solos over the riff, verse or chorus (or along the whole song) to give me more material to make this collab epic! Come on guys! Who else is in??? smile.gif

Posted by: Nimrandir Dec 18 2011, 10:44 PM

Ok, I'm going to post my take in a couple of days smile.gif.

yeah! do it mate! I'm doing some changes to the chorus, I added one round and changed a bit the progression to make it more catchy! I'll share the new version soon.

Hello guys!! This is the new version of the song with a different chorus as I said.. I will need a new version from Bogdan for the chorus, and more lyrics by Kris for this part... smile.gif

I decided to put a part in this, i chose this spot on the song cause it felt like it would fit BUT specially since the other part kicks in right after so i felt like a baby version of dave murray and adrian smith lol

Hey guys!! This is a new version with Bogdan's bass... I recorded my rhythm guitars again following a bit more Bogdan's rhythm in the chorus and using a Mesa Boggie amp instead of the line 6 pod... let me know what you think!

I think that Bogdan did a great arrangement of the song!

Agreed! Bogdan rulez!
Quick question about recording your Dual Rec - what volume level did you use on your rig for recording? Do you pump it up past the half way mark? I like the tone alot wink.gif

Posted by: maharzan Jan 14 2012, 08:41 AM

Ok I am ruining this song.. I am NOT a vocalist but just giving a try of the melody on my head.. yeah its a softer side for the song and Kris does awesome job for the metal thing. If anyone has a metal voice perhaps s/he can redo it. I know you don't like it but anyway, wanted to share.. Please don't make fun of me. smile.gif

I used the modern sound of the channel 2 and these are the settings

Presence 2
Master 4
Gain 7
Bass 6
Mid 6
Treble 4

Hey guys! this is how the solo section is being built... there are some spaces for Nimrandir and Enlo22 takes because I need the only guitar takes from you guys. smile.gif

As soon as I have those takes we can consider this part done,,, but if there is any of you that want to record something today or tomorrow and post it I can make this section longer!

Hey guys!!! This is the version with Vocals!!!! smile.gif
I worked a bit on the structure and also added some backing vocals. smile.gif

I hope that you like it!! I still have to add Enlo22 and Nimrandir solos in the solo sections (but I haven't received the files yet).

If you like this version we can go for the videos. These are the things that I would need:

1. Kris video singing the song and maybe playing some rhythm guitars.
2. Bogdan video playing the bass for the song.
3. Nimrandir Solo Video. (as well as the audio takes)
4. Some of you playing the rhythm guitar for the song!! Don't let me alone with the riffs! biggrin.gif
5. Film yourself singing the heroic "GMC" or "Practice" to add in the video!
6. Film whatever you think that could be added to the video and post it here!

I think that's all... smile.gif

Here is my take.. actually 4 different recordings of it biggrin.gif. I trust the choice of the one with least amount of mistakes to you Gab smile.gif. Just tell me which one you have chosen, so I'd know what guitar to use for the video biggrin.gif.

I decided not to post the 2nd solo, as it will take alot of time, and I don't want to delay the collab any longer (sorry for the delays!).

Haha yeah!!! Now we're talking - I think this is very promising! Let me digest soem more and I'll come with some concise feedback (and see what areas I can improve in my vocals)

Also it's awesome to be backed up by your vocals Gabe =) Very clever use of the rhythmic vocal line at the end.

Oh and did I mention solo guitars in this tune rock?! biggrin.gif

Love how it's turning out. I think it could use a little guitar noodling in the background towards the end during the rhtym section and thru the G M C vocals & outtro - to the end of the song. Just a thought. I'd keep it in the back ground - not prominent, but something extra to listen to.

I have a show on Thursday, and a party on Friday so I won't be near a computer til Saturday evening. Just think it would fit nicely into the 80's style rock theme to have it there.
