You register at www.garageband.com, www.stereofame.com, myspace.com and reverbnation.com (and put your song on your facebook profiles from there..) etc.

Upload your song(s) and be active in the community and let people know you are listening to their songs, and they'll listen to yours as well

No serious, cool sounding guitar! I'd say start promoting when it's finished, so not yet. Then do what Paal said, use the internet. And then find a way to show everyone the link. Maybe start a chain mail? I hate them, but they work
