Hey,
first of all: Thanks for mentoring me and taking the time!

I would say I'm an advanced guitar player with a big lack of theory. I mostly do what is described in the lessons without really knowing what I do. I know "standard" chords, barrés, and 5th power chords. Then I know the pentatonics. And that there are some modes (lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, etc.) but don't know when to play wich mode and why.
I would love to learn how to improvise, mix classic with metal/rock, to have more knowledge about what I'm playing and how to write own songs.

I'm listening to metal mostly, some gothic (normally just "Virgin Black" ), but also classic. I really love the "Mondscheinsonate" from Beethoven.

I hope I expressed myself clearly and gave you the information you need. Any more questions, or some points I shall explain more?

so, out of what I am digging, you want to develop your knowledge in theory and apply them into real contexts, right?

First things first, as you know, I am running a v-chat on modes series and we have reached the Aeolian mode! In this series I am offering small examples and the theoretical aspects of learning how to consciously use modes in various harmonic contexts

Here's what I suggest:

1) Make a big theory rundown
2) Discuss modes and aplications
3) Implement concepts in real situations - based on GMC lessons or on backing tracks

Could you send some recorded material with your playing? I am curious to listen

Yes. That sounds good. I'm trying to participate at your v-chat. Not sure if I can make it any time, but I'll try. Normally I'm home at 8 so i could make it. (German time - your chat is at 9.)

Do you got some material for the theory rundown? Or some site I should take a look to.

What do you mean with applications? Is it the intgration of some elements into my playing?


Here are two vids of my playing. Not that happy with them. I'm definitely not straight. So I have to work on my timing. Some playing mistkes also... If the quality is to bad, tell me.

All in all I want to learn to improvise, play lead and rythm guitar. Write own songs, solos and stuff; Also transform popular songs for acoustic and e. Maybe some acoustic playing, though it's not priority.

Rhythm/ Theory/ AP for starting out the Vivaldi and Metal Metrics 1 lessons are pretty difficult, but I wonder how you would fare with this one? Let's focus on tightness, timing and perfect execution

Ahoy mate! Before tackling ANY lesson take a look at the theoretical aspects of playing, understand what's being played and why. For instance, this lesson will teach you not only how to alternate pick but how to subdivide a 4/4 bar

Take a look at each part and see how the subdivisions work inside the bar, understand each beat and then you will anticipate every beat when recording without any hesitation!

It's interesing to see me play. Should've record myself earlier though. Because I've got to work on my timing, for sure. It really helps to record me while playing and analyse what I've done wrong and what was good.

hey mate! it seems like you have good timing until you reach the sextuplets (you actually played quintuplets I thing) - where you left some notes out (1 note to be more precise ) anyway, I would like to see the recording against a metronome or the backing track provided with the lesson.

Your picking is clean man! Very good! What say you?

Hey man, the timing is almost perfect, but I think you were a bit de-tuned. Anyway, it's clear for me - the progress is obvious! You can practice this one for a bit more but in the mean time, we can move on to another rhythm lesson, which will incorporate chords this time

Do you like it? If you don't, I'll think of something else, as I find it particularly important for your motivation to work on something you like

It wasn't that I didn't liked the lesson but was tired of playing alone. After playing with a few friends last weekend I got motivated again. So, here we go...
