GMC Forum _ Juan M Valero _ My Future

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Dec 28 2007, 10:45 PM

Hello GuitarMasterFriends, ehem... today I'm gonna talk about what will be my future in next year, but first of all I explain my actual situation.

Well, now I'm 26 and I spent 5 years studing Farmacy in the University. I ended my studies last May and I started to work in the farmacy of my mother. Well, I passed all my live thinking that music would be ONLY a hobbie, so thats the reason because I decided to study in the University, but nowadays I think I can work in the thing that I LOVE: music.

Last month I knew a keyboard player who has an orchestra and he offered me to take part in. That was my dilemma, now I'm too busy, I'm working from 9 to 14 and from 17 to 20,30 but this project is the oportunity that I never been searching because I thought it was no possible.
It's not a great orchestra, but it's a good job (I like it) and I can get some moneywith it, and with my guitar classes (now I have 3 students, but I hope they will be some more), and with the money that I get in this site with my lessons I think I can get enoght salary to pay the renting and the food, hehe.

So after thinking a lot I decide to left my job and work ONLY in music !!!

As you can see it's a really important decision because I know I will have a really good salary in the farmacy (and don't forget that in few years it would be mine). And if I left this job is probable that my mother sells the farmacy, so it's a bit "dramatic"... but I think I MUST try to get my dream and I don't need too much money, I need my ilusions, I need my dreams, I need my music.

My decision is to work hard in farmacy during January and maybe February to get some money and then left the job smile.gif

Well, that's my tale, hehe, I wish I have a happy end !!! but I need to try it cool.gif

What do you think ?????

This is great news, Juan!

Even though you'll get more money out of working in the pharmacy, you have the abillity to pursue a musical carreer and that really is amazing. I wish you good luck with it, and I'm sure it will go well.

Posted by: preownedguitar Dec 29 2007, 12:23 AM

If theres any hope of survival in your current situation to just go out and live out your music dreams, I would say go for it. A pharmacy could make you a lot of money, but in the end, will that make you happy? I would say shoot for the moon and if all else fails, you'll land on the stars. If music makes you happy, I would go for it.

Posted by: ActiveX Dec 29 2007, 12:27 AM

If you have the opportunity, the courage, and the drive to pursue your dreams I say...Go for it man!

Thanks for sharing that with us Juan - best of luck and let us know how it works out - you are doing the right thing if you follow your heart smile.gif

that's what I was thinking, I would never forgive myself losing this oportunity !!!

Hisham, that's a good point, I have now some new projects in different fields, so it's time to work on them !!!!

Marcus, is really a difficult choice, but now I'm so happy with my decision, it's what I MUST do, Life is only a dream !!!! biggrin.gif

Well, when I started to work last May I as happy with this job, but now that I know that I can work on music I'm not happy with it, I cannot be conformed with it.

XD yeah, I'm a crazy man !!! well, I'm trying to keep a good relationship, and now it's not too bad, but I don't know if it's because my parents accept my decision or if it's because they don't believe that I'm gonna left the farmacy !! tongue.gif

My words of wisdom would be to

Always follow your dreams

Never ever live a life to make someone else happy (parents etc) - a life based on someone else's dreams is bound to hit back hard on you.

Having said this - it is of course important to make decisions that are based on reality. This isn't something I have to remind you of Juan - but I am saying it anyway as we have younger people reading this as well: To make a dream come true you first have to study reality really really hard.

Many people live in a dream and what they discover by the end of the day is reality. This is why so many people fail miserably when pursuing their dreams - they simply confuse their goal with the road to success. The road offers no glamour at all - just lots of hard work.

This is just my two cents, of course! smile.gif

Posted by: Davidian Dec 29 2007, 12:04 PM

That's so true Kris!

Juan, it's really amazing that you can follow your dreams! It's somehow a dream for all of us I think tongue.gif
But not mine in the years to come smile.gif In my opinion you can make such decisions much easier when you have a diploma. So first I'll study hard and then maybe I can do something in music ... I hope biggrin.gif

Well I wish you the best and I'm sure U will make it!!

Edit: spelling

yeah, that's the difference between "living in a dream" and "live a dream", so to other people how are thinking the same as me: first of all it's important that you think if it's posible.

yeah, I have it, so if I don't have money enough I can work again in another farmacy, because I hope my parents will sell his one.

yeah, that's easier. hehe, I started to study farmacy because then I had 18-19 and of course I cannot play as good as now... BTW I think I must improve a lot so I will write a good studing routine smile.gif (4-5 hours a day plus more time to write songs and to record them biggrin.gif)

It's a tough one Juan, but try it, why not. Only the brave succeed remember!!

Posted by: Philippe Jan 6 2008, 04:09 PM

Is there some possible compromise ?

Maybe you can pursue both activities at the same time. For instance, work half-time at the pharmacy. And in a few years, when the pharmacy is yours, you can even spend less time there.

Or maybe, you can give a try to this music job for one year, and if it doesn't go as expected, go back to your mother's pharmacy.

Hi Juan,
The maxim I try to follow is:
'there are rarely good or bad decisions, what really counts is how well we implement and live with them'.

I think you've taken a very brave and honest step Juan. Life usually has too many regrets about what we didn't do - this won't be one for you smile.gif . As you are already qualified as a pharmacist you can always return to it if you want, so it's not as if you've closed the door on that career, more just stepped through the door of your full time musician one.

Bravely done and all the best for your music future smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

Great sentence !! thanks guys for you help, I'm so lucky to be here in GMC with people like you !!
I believe my dream is posible, so I'm gonna follow it !!!!

Eh, I'm going to be the devil's advocate here. You're still young, and you think your mother would sell the pharmacy to you in a couple of years, fine. What I'd propose you to do would be keep music as a hobby/part time job while you do your time in the pharmacy. Once the pharmacy is yours, you can hire someone to man it for you and since you own it, you'll still get a bit of the cut I'd imagine, then switch to music full time while having pharmacy as a "hobby" and helping when necessary, etc. If you ever do fall out of love with music and want a more steady paycheck/etc, you'll have to option of returning to pharmacy. Your family's business would still be in the family and you'd have the option of returning to it. Can you moonlight as a musician for a couple years all the while saving up a good nest egg then make the jump into the music world?

I certainly wouldn't leave the pharmacy until you had enough money to pay for 6 months, if not a year's worth of expenses. Living month to month in a field as uncertain as music seems like a very risky idea to me.

My 2 cents. It's definitely doable, but are you really ready yet?

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Jan 10 2008, 04:04 PM

Thanks Goliath, mmm that's another option, but now I'm so thirsty with the farmacy... so I need to left it out, maybe for few weeks or maybe for ever tongue.gif I don't know... but the truth is that in February I need a farmacy holidays ...

Posted by: Goliath Jan 10 2008, 04:59 PM

Is working more part time at the pharmacy then giving more lessons/playing music more an option as well?

Rather than working 40 hours a week, maybe hit 20 in the pharmacy, then spend the rest of the day with music?

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Jan 10 2008, 09:23 PM

mmm well I think it's a good idea for february and maybe march, but then I will need all the time for music if I want to do something in this field !! and don't doubt I wish do great things with my music !!!!! biggrin.gif

I'd seek endorsements the second you drop your first EP so you won't have to spend your money on gear, that's for sure.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Jan 10 2008, 10:33 PM

mmm I don't know if someone would like to endorse me ... but well I should try it smile.gif

Posted by: Goliath Jan 11 2008, 02:44 AM

My friends friend's band got endorsed by Ernie Ball and they don't have to buy strings and get a little bit of cash from it, strings is something I think you could get with a little luck pretty quickly. In the states, Sam Ash music store will give you $2k a year if you play more than 2x a month and put up a banner at your shows, my buddy's band has that one. Certainly you can swing something like that in Spain. Just remember if you need help with lyrics in english I got your back tongue.gif

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Feb 1 2008, 12:48 PM

well, for this month and maibe next one I'm working 2 days and half every week, so I can prepare myself, keep come money and then if all is ok I will left the farmacy. I think it's a good option and I wish all will be ok. I hope the firts month would be hard but I'm ready . Now I'm working in some video lesson that I hope you will enjoy, so keep on tune !!
