Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys out here could help me find a good guitar for me. I was looking at some fenders like the new VG and some vintage models, but I am not sure whats good for my style of playing. I usually play a lot of blues and jazz and I am also getting into more shredding and all that. Is there any guitar that suits all that? Also price range doesn't matter right now. Thanks!

Fender '62 Reissue is great for this. Friend has one so I've gotten to play it extensively. Texas Special pickups were a favorite of SRV so any fender loaded with those will be a good starting point as well.

But as always the 100% absolute sure answer to your question is:

Audition as many as possible at your local guitar shops till you find the one that suits you.

Good Luck!

I've been looking at the Fender website and I found this

http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0117002747

In the specs it says Tex-Mex single coil pickups. Is that the same or something different?

Thanks!

A 335 or 345 would probably fit the bill. Most jazzers and a lot of (not all) blues players use a semi. (A lot of heavy weight jazzers will use a big semi like a L5 or a Byrdland.) SRV however used a strat solid body and got wonderful blues tones out of it and to be honest someone like Mike Stern or Robben Ford or Scott Henderson or Larry Carlton can play awesome jazz fusion and/or blues on a tele or a strat or....

To some extent many would say that its arguably less the guitar and more technique. Pat Metheny would sound like Pat Metheny (or whoever) whatever the guitar was whereas I would sound like a dog's dinner on a Pensa Suhr custom or a De Angelico Semi or a cheapo Yamaha electric.

Like Muris and Hardtail have said try as many guitars as you can and chose the one that does it for you. Don't just check out one pick up - try all and mess with the tone controls and electrics, including the volume (you can go from clean to o/d without adjusting a tube amp by upping the guitar volume biggrin.gif ). Lots of players tend to just stick everything on 10 and leave the pick up switch glued in one position - it doesn't have to be like that and you can change the tone of any guitar by fooling with the electrics that it already has.

Having said all that for jazz try using the neck pickup and just rolling off some/all the tone more and going for a natural clean sound. Blues maybe more the bridge with tone turned up. But experiment with what is there.
Cheers,
Tony

ps I'm a hypocrite as I use a Gibson semi mainly for Jazz and a solid for pretty much everything else laugh.gif

Afraid I can't help on Fenders Muris - Gibson's are my bit. Think Hardtail or fkalich are much more up on Fenders then me. Sorry BubbaJ.

Tex-Mex pickups have a flavor all their own but are not the same as the Texas Specials. I think the Tex-Mex pickups were designed to be like the specials but more affordable. I have played them both but not at the same time and all I remember is that they are both hot pickups and they both sound really good.

Ok cause I can't find any Fender loaded with those. Do you have to buy them separate?

Thanks again!

Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature series should have Texas Specials... otherwise yes you have to order them from Fender Custom Shop or get them online like here:

Texas Specials

I like these so much my next strat will probably be a custom with these loaded in it.

Wait sorry I am new to all this stuff but by Custom Shop do you mean I can order a guitar and ask them to put in the Texas Special pickups?

Yeah, you can do that OR just order the pickups and have them installed in whichever stratocaster feels good in your hands. I'd recommend USA Stratocasters if you can afford them. Also, the pickups can be found on Ebay New in Box for much cheaper than other online stores.

For instance I will probably end up getting a USA Fender Standard Strat or Deluxe Strat and then putting in a pair of Texas Specials myself. If you are uncomfortable soldering have your local guitar tech do it. Hope this helps!

Yah I was looking at the Fender American Deluxe Ash. Is it hard to install them or can I go to my local Guitar Center and have them install it?

Thanks!

For Blues and Jazz I like a fatter tone better so I would go for something with humbuckers. Like a Gibson LP or cheaper copy like Epiphone and for the blues/jazz I could very well use a Fender, I think the 6L6 tubes fit this style.
For a more twangy blues approach a Fender guitar with a Fender amp or even a Marshall for a more gritty sound.

I'd check out a bunch of guitars to find what suits you best, the difference is sound between a Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul is enormous so make sure what sound you're looking for.

Check out PRS, Gibson, Fender, Hagstrom to mention a few brands, check various models.
